Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Precisely MON. He IS batting better than North.
If Hauritz doesn't play in Wales - he should hop on the plane now and never darken the doors of Australian cricket again.

Hughes
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
MacDonald
Johnson
Lee
Hauritz
Siddle

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Wimpy, North is there as an allrounder right? So, if he's bowling better than Hauritz, doesn't that mean he should hold his place?

Allrounders rarely go well with both at once, it happens from time to time, but they mostly hold their place on the back of one discipline. Right now, North is the best spinner we have, therefore he keeps his place.

Hauritz can't spin it and is being tonked - who cares if he's scoring the odd 50?

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
He's batting better than North at the moment! If they HAVE to play Hauritz, then the team I would pick is Haddin at 6, Johnson at 7, Lee at 8, Hauritz, Siddle and Clark.

I'm really hoping they don't pick Hauritz.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Sorry but that's convoluted.
Does that mean that Horrorwitz should bat at No6 ?

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
North is bowling well, so his place should be assured - as our spinner.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
If they are going to play Horrorwitz then they need an all-rounder to cover for him when he gets carted and taken out of the attack. That means either North or MacDonald - and North has been pretty unconvincing of late (but don't worry, like Horrorwitz he'll come good eh).

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
McDonald is a solid player, I can see why he was selected for the SA tests. But, with the 5 quicks we have, there is no real room for him at the moment - if we had a decent spinner he'd play for sure.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I like Ronnie, he might not win you the game but he won't lose it for you either. I reckon they should've given him a run here next to North and made it an audition for next week.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Chucker, one of the reasons I rate Hilfy so much is that he DOESN'T bowl those deliveries. I don't know what you've been watching, but his test cricket has involved a lot of tight stuff, regular swing and the odd bouncer.

Where he does need to imporve is in his variety - batsmen can sometimes get comfortable with the swing and they can settle into a rhythm. If he developes a decent slow ball or even a straight one, he could mix it up enough to make his outswinger lethal.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Macdonald wont get a look in unless North gets dropped and they are playing that h0m0 hauritz.

Put Hilfenhorse in the 3rd at Royal Ascot and his trip may actaully be for a reason.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I really don't see how Lee's spell can be regarded as unfortunate at this stage...if he bowls c/rap during the series then fair enough...but this could set him up for a really good run.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
The problem with Hilfenhorse is that he bowls a lot of **** balls, and tends to bowl too much short pitched stuff . He lacks the consistent control, and is not up to test match standard yet. He is too much like Brett Lee, but lacks the experience of Lee. Unfortunately, Lee took a five for , and is now guaranteed a spot in the 12 for the first test.
Ronald MacDonald wont get picked because after the AB de Villiers massacre in the 3rd Saffa test , the selectors fear KP will inflict the same damage on him. Punter and the selectors have a low threshold for dropping bowlers who get hammered.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Siddle won't get the bounce that Clark can get...plus Siddle hasn't proved he has the same consistency...yet...but I am inclined to agree Siddle is very similar to Clark.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Adrain, Katich (like Clarke) can only bowl a few overs at a time cause of his back...hence why North is so invaluable...he can bowl all day!

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
7 batsmen (incl. Haddin) is enough. 4 quicks and 3 part time spinners gives us the options we need - especially as the part timers are just as good as the 'genuine' spinner we have.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Siddle is Clark on fast forward, and with an attitude. Here's the tip - KP will be Siddles bunny, Cook too. Anyone that plays away from his body will be in trouble facing the fiery ranga!

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I still don't think we can risk only having 3 seamers...especially if our spinner is a liability. England will go after him and we could have another McGain situation. Clark has the wood on a lot of England batsmen...most notably Cook, Strauss, Pietersen and Collingwood. Ok, Pietersen may not be Clark's bunny, but Clark knows how to dismiss him early on...Pietersen plays away from his body early on, Clark can bowl the off cutter that pegs back his off-stump...if any of you have fond memories of 06/07!

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Ausnick, I didn't say Clark was poor - I'm just going on combinations and what we need bowlers doing.

Hilfy swings it, bowls around 140. MJ swings it, bowls around 150. Good opening combo for England.

Siddle and Lee are 150+ bowlers with genuine aggression (Ok, Siddle does, Lee will have from time to time!).

Clark is a top line and length bowler, he'll keep it tight all day. But, is that what we need? Maybe it is. I am thinking more along attacking lines, but I suppose a defensive option will come in handy - especially if Lee and MJ stray and go for a few.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I agreed with the commentators saying we had a better preparation. The same happened to us last summer - the Sth Afircans had competitive cricket against PMs XI and WA sides - we had to make do with 2 tests against NZ! Hardly fair! :P

On the basis of yesterdays play & what we know of Siddle, Nye, I'm inclined to agree.

Lee
Siddle
Johnson
Horrible Hauritz (it's time to put up or p1ss off)

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I disagree nye...Clark was able to tie up one end, while Lee attacked, he was our second best bowler today. But I do agree that Siddle will have a good series, he is like Clark in the sense that he is accurate and can move the ball around off the seam and extract life out of a soft track...but why can't we play all 4 quicks?

Australia are having MUCH better preparation than England...the commentators were complaining, questioning why Australia are getting 4 days worth of practice on a pitch that is going to be very similar to the one at Cardiff, against strong opposition, while England are playing on a completely different surface against pretty pathetic opposition. A long day in the field is what the bowlers like Clark and Lee need for the sake of proving and improving match fitness.
