London has, what, nearly 8 million people? Selling 30,000 tickets to a test at one of the 2 most important cricket venues in the world should not be a problem - ever!

But yes, England is one of three nations that still see Tests as the ultimate form of the game. Getting the long game back to the top everywhere requires appealling to the rest.

Lord's with 30,000 as well as the Oval with 25,000 capacity sold out several times over. Demand for test-match cricket is around 30,000 to 60,000 per day depending on the opposition and location of the test.

Switching the first test to Cardiff was extremely controversial here in the UK due to Sophia garden's low capacity.

Capacity 5500 (15,000 after redevelopment)
Even Kabul Stadium has more seats - with standing room for women.

I'm giving sven the prize of the day with his.. "Rubbish. If anything needs to be changed, then it is to extend First-class games from four days to five".

Here Here i like the sound of that.

Even tho some may or may not see the 5th day it is still the best way to go..

Tour matches are always lead up games to Test matches and test matches are 5 day matches so it makes sense that tour matches are also 5 days..

what a ridiculous statement. Test cricket in England is in better shape than in Australia. Almost every test here is sold out several times over. And about the negative cricket... Not even worth replying to. NEXT!

The ICC needs to remove the fixturing system they have. If teams don't want to play test cricket, don't make them.

Australia still loves test cricket, but nobody wants to see the Aussies play Bangladesh! Even Sri Lanka and Pakistan this summer holds little interest.

Why not allow the sides to choose who they play? The Asian sides, that struggle to draw fans to test cricket, can focus on playing each other - their rivalry should allow a certain level of interest to remain. That way they can get Australia, Sth Africa or England over every now and then, keeping it more of a novelty. Hell, if they don't want to play test cricket, they can give it away for all I care!

I'd love to see Australia play a 5 (or 6) test series against Sth Africa.

I think Aus playing SA, Eng, NZ and even WI would rate in this country, regardless of the ability of each side at the time. India is interesting, but the drama that goes with it is always off putting. Frankly, I got sick of them very quickly last year!

For test cricket to stay relevant, the game needs to be kept fresh - too much of a good thing can be too much.

Changing the way it is played is not the answer, changing the way it is marketed is.

I have been to a number of PuraCup games and i can assure you that extending the booking of a ground the size of the gabba or MCG would be disastrous given the turnout.

The Sheffield Shield needs more bums on seats support before it goes to five days.

The same goes for Test cricket. I am not saying that 4 day tests are the way to go but i can see where they are coming from, from a managerial standpoint. S'all

Most of the money comes from TV these days and teams like england and india that play negative cricket on the 4ht & 5th days is killing the sport financially and credibly.

I think any team that goes into a Test that risks losing in order to win is something to be rewarded.

If everyone is so "time-poor", why don't we just make Tests into one day games? Then we can turn ODI's into one-hour games, and reduce T20 to one ball each.

What fun!

Re:ICC wants 4 day tests Reply to this message
Having to book a stadium (and stadium staff) for an extra day is pretty costly, especially if the game is over in 3 or 4 days.

I am in strongly in favour of the 5 day match but i can see where they are coming from too.

What they could do is get more play in each day, if they were to get an extra 2 hours a day they might be able to overcome the time issue and still offset the stadium cost issue but it will mean losing a whole day of ticket sales and TV coverage not to mention the impact on players and fans ... and of the integrity and character of Test cricket as an institution.

They might revise the points system to encourage captains to take risks to force wins/losses, but i doubt that will change the way the game is played.

If Test cricket ends up being draw after draw, it will be a farce

Test cricket is rapidly on the decline because they play a ridiculous amount of 50 over, 20/20 and now IPL games....

how does making it 4 days fix everything?? this Morgan fella has completely missed the problem and I don't understand what logic he used in coming up with this solution???

Well, just get the test teams to play an endless circuit of Bangladesh , Zimbabwe and NZ at home, and avoid playing boring 5 day tests like in the Ashes or Aus vs SA. That way all test matches would only last 3 days.
Only problem would be that the google-eyed, bent-arm flicker's home team already has this schedule, and it may interfere with his world domination of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh

Re:ICC wants 4 day tests Reply to this message
Yeah, ok, reduce them to four - increase the numbers of draws, that'll get the crowds back! $^$#@&* MORON!

The 5th day pitch is why spinners play the game, groundsmen would need to under-prepare pitches to allow for results - I doubt many would like that.

ICC wants 4 day tests Reply to this message
INTERNATIONAL Cricket Council president David Morgan has suggested Test matches could be reduced from five to four days as part of a major overhaul of the game's traditional format.

The suggestion comes because of the need for the sport to remain relevant in an increasingly time-poor world and as a reaction to the increasing popularity to the Twenty20 format.

"Another thought that many people have, that we are examining is whether Test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five," Morgan told the India Today magazine.

"I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in Test match cricket."

Morgan believed it wouldn't be too difficult for players to make a mental shift to playing from five days to four.

He said that Test cricket needed to be tweaked and that special cricket balls must be made to facilitate night Tests in white clothing.

"We need better over-rates, better pitches that give a good balance between bat and ball and we need to consider day-night Test cricket," Morgan said.

"There is great support for it, the issue is the colour of the ball and the quality of the ball.

"It would be a pity if Test match cricket - day-night - had to be played with a white ball and therefore coloured clothing.

"We are looking very closely at ball manufacturing design that replicates a red ball, maybe an orange ball, a ball that could still allow us to play in white clothing and still at night."
