Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Yes, well, in that sense I completely agree. Since 2005, the England team has done nothing but go backwards, whereas I honestly think that the Australia team has moved forward in every department except spin. Yes, you could say that our bowling attack is weaker because we don't have Warne and McGrath, but in 2005, we leaned on those two SO heavily and when McGrath kept getting injured, we were left in trouble...but now, we have 5 class seamers...all of whom, I am very confident, could do a good job for us.

You're right, he has no recent form. Neither do Clark or Hilfenhaus.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
C'mon Mon,
Lee is past it.
His performance in Perth against the Saffers as the senior bowler was very ordinary. The Windies tour was nearly a year ago. He has no recent form, his fitness must be questioned and there are four quicks, a medium pacer allrounder and a "spinner " who should be picked ahead of him simply on fitness and recent form.
Lee should only be picked if two other quicks are injured.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Here's a stat (yeah, I know, I hate stats! :P)
Lee has played 35 test matches away from Australia. In that time he has taken 81 wickets of batsmen that are top 6 in the order (including night watchmen).

That is a touch over 2 a game, or 1 an innings!

I think that is fairly ordinary for an opening bowler? 1 top 6 batsmen per innings, that is putting a lot of pressure on the other bowlers.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
disagree to a certain extent nye - Lee did have a good series in the Windies also. OK, not the toughest opposition perhaps, but I think a lot of people forget how competitive that series was.

He was sick in India and should never have toured, especially given his personal situation at the time. He had a good home series against NZ - big woop - and then got found out against the Saffas.

I'm sounding like a Lee fan here, when I'm really not. I just don't think we should be writing him off so quickly, when no-one is exactly jumping out of the ground to take his spot. His record in England is ordinary, but it's still better than Warne's record in India, and you wouldn't dream of leaving HIM out of the team there (if he was still playing).

I'm quite looking forward to this tour game.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
The trouble is, Lee was good when McGrath retired because he was playing at home, against Sri Lanka. He kept it up for the first test against India, but fell away badly after that. But even his Sri Lankan performance failed to yield a 5 wicket haul.

He has never performed away from home and his English record is terrible.

I hope, if he plays, that he bowls himself to a stand still and rips them apart - his record suggests it won't happen.

This is one reason why statistics are bull5hit - Lee is apparently in the same class as Lillee, being in the rare list of 300 wicket takers for Australia.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
English weather will play a part.

I hope Hilf's in. If not, Lee needs to hit his straps ASAP or he wont be there come the 3rd test. I think we're all forgetting how good he was after McGrath retired. He may still have it in him.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I love it when people call MON "master". No offence intended but it's so "Igor".

I think it does matter who is selected. And I think if Brett Lee & Nathan Hauritz get the gig in the first test we'll be right behind the 8 ball. The damage done, from a psychological viewpoint, if the Poms go 1-up should not be under-estimated.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I agree, I doubt there will be 5 results. I also think the series will be relatively close - maybe another 2-1 scoreline.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if the final result of the series doesn't reflect the closeness of the matches. So 3-0 Australia could be on the cards.

Boy, I can't wait for the battle to begin - and these boards will kick into overdrive!!!!

exactly nye.

I don't think we'll have as many result matches as everyone thinks though, probably at least one draw.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I think MON is suggesting that we will win, regardless of the XI guys on the field.

I tend to agree, we have a superior side to the English - but we did in 2005 too. If we can't limit the no-balls, if we can't master the reverse swing (bowling it or facing it) and if we can't play with the intensity we had in Sth Africa, then they can knock us off again.

I just fear the wrong bowlers could provide England with a decent first up score, and that could set their series up (especially if KP fires).

It's only the journalist who say Hilfenhaus will not be selected, not Ponting or Nielsen.

As I've said before, it doesn't matter who we pick.

He's running on proven potential and reputation at the moment...but believe me, if he has a bad test match, he will be dropped faster than you can say "Hey don't worry! There's always Bollywood!"

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Sorry kipsy...cricinfo has pretty categorically stated that he will not play.

And Nye, it won't be an advantage to England if Lee is bowling quick and swinging the ball around (as unlikely as that may sound to you, it is still a possibility)...or if Hauritz can get some flight/drift and turn.

So, which bowlers will England target? Obviously Lee will be one...and something tells me that they will go after Siddle, they will underestimate him, and that will work to his advantage HUGELY.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I see it differently. I think Hilfenhaus' omission is a sign that he is a shoe-in for the first test along with Siddle & MJ.

I think MJ has been selected in this warm-up game because someone has to take wickets and possibly to help him stay sharp.

Lee, Clark and Hauritz will be given a long examination.

Clark for me.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
I cannot believe they are not going to play Hilfenhaus in this one! Clearly, he is not in the first test team, that sucks - I have been looking forward to seeing him unleashed with the new Duke since the SA series!

I still think 4 quicks, no Hauritz - that means Lee and Clark will play. So, I hold out the slim hope that they are 'resting' Hilfy for the test. Otherwise we are 100% certain to play one of Lee and Hauritz - and that is a big advantage for England.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Well up here in Nth QLD on the evening news lastnight it was broadcasted that Watson had injured his thigh muscle and possibly his hammy or was that his "Heartidge"? Why this hypocrondriac is even still in the squad with his constant injury toll is beyond me and I am sure that there are others who would agree.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
If Watson can't play, then that will hurt Hauritz chances...I just can't see the selectors taking the chance of having only three quicks...unless Hauritz bowls REALLY well.
