| Big day for Australia tomorrow: Will Johnson get the Duke ball to swing? It's been hot and dry here for several weeks now, so swing will be hard to come by. |

| Wow, I really don't care that North, Hughes, Ponting, Clarke and Haddin all failed because HUSSEY IS BACK!! That is a very important knock from Australia's perspective... |

| sven...in 2005 Lee, Kasper and Gillespie were ALL slouches. Katich and Hughes are better suited to England than the Hayden and Langer combo, methinks. |

Bizarre.
Egnalnd and Australia going neck-and-neck in their respective warm-up games. 2 minutes ago, Bopara was caught in the deep, and just now Katich is gone too. Australia still lead though by 165 vs. 163 runs. |

"Yes, well, in that sense I completely agree. Since 2005, the England team has done nothing but go backwards, whereas I honestly think that the Australia team has moved forward in every department except spin. Yes, you could say that our bowling attack is weaker because we don't have Warne and McGrath, but in 2005, we leaned on those two SO heavily and when McGrath kept getting injured, we were left in trouble...but now, we have 5 class seamers...all of whom, I am very confident, could do a good job for us."
To be honest, I don't think that Australia have moved on in every department at all. For that, we should look at the kind of form and reputation that Australia had going INTO the Ashes series (just like now).
Back then, they had the most successful opening pair in modern cricket in Hayden/Langer and a very strong middle order in Ponting, Clark, Martyn and Katich. While their bowling was hevily reliant on Warne McGrath, Lee and Kaspa were no slouches either.
No one could have foreseen the performance-dive that Gillespie experienced and coupled with McGrath's Injury, Kaspa dimply didn't live up to his previous record. And the less is said about Tait, the better. So yes, they have a more balanced seamer attack, but on their current form, only Mitchell Johnson would have featured in the first test in 2005, probably at the expense of Gillespie.
Now their opening pair have performed really well, but they have exceeded everyone's expectations and I still don't rate them better than Hayden/Langer in early 2005.
The big change IMO is the middle order. Where the middle-order of 2005 was excellent rhoughout, the 2009 middleorder go into the series having averaged around 30-40 over the last year or so. Ponting has been so-so, Clarke has been likewise and Hussey has been simply poor.
Haddin is a good batsman, but if the chips are down, give me Gilchrist anyday. Compare this: Gilchrist in Bangladesh 2006 vs. Haddin in India 2009. Nuff said. |

| Didn't Cook score a hundred in a 20/20 last week? He seems to be shaking off the "Test-match only" label with those kind of performances. |

So Haddin's a better wicket keeper /batsman than Gilchrist? |
