Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Now that Lee has proven that he can reverse the older ball (curiously, he can't swing a new one!), he has probably edged out Clark in my 'perfect attack'.

Give the new rock to MJ and Hilfy - they should move t and cause problems. Then, when it gets easier for the batsmen, bring on Siddle and Lee to intimidate them with pace.

In all honesty, I think Siddle is our man this series - he looks the best of the lot.

All part of the psychological game.
England were playing on a green top and Australia were playing on a flat track.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
pretty much.
These guys were up against are trying to break in, on the outer or are up and down form wise.
The Poms have been given a novel warm up game to refine touch - a soft option so to speak to get them warmed up and were never really going to face much opposition in doing so.

I am presuming we are playing a team which is made up of the next best XI for England, and they are playing a weaker team.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
hahaha.

I don't follow county cricket so I'm not sure of the quality of the Warwickshire batting line-up, but is it worth mentioning the demolition job Jimmy Anderson did yesterday? Panesar and Flintoff took wickets also.

KP had a double failure though.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Isn't it a completely different Lee when he can finally produce good line and length..and i did post last week that if he could do that i would allow him to play tests again btw.

But as we all know the true test will come in the tests not in the tour matches and that goes for all the guys...except Horrorwitz of course.

Never too embarrassed to admit anything but no, im not making a u-turn.
1 spell doesnt make him the saviour or the force he once was but it does instill some confidence - some - if he is going to be there.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion (PREVIEW)
4 quicks on a deck that may be a little inconsistent late in the game isnt necessarily a bad thing. Esp the 4 quicks we'll be going in with.
A few skidders, a bit of sideways movement, the odd riser and we might just run through them.
Conversely, the same can be said for the Poms but i stll say weve the better attack regardless.
------------------------- ------------------------- ---------
I completely agree. We also have enough variety in North, Katich and Clarke. North looks to be bowling with confidence...whilst the opposite can be said for Hauritz.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
ahh, Loki...I respect the fact that you are not making a u-turn on your views of Brett Lee based on one innings (or are you just too embarrassed to admit it?), but in all honesty, anyone deserves a place in the team if they bowl like that.

That is as well as I have seen him bowl in a LONG time...possibly ever. He REALLY wanted it, and he pulled something out of the bag when no one else was getting ANYTHING, and that is a sign of true character...when the chips are down, you keep plugging away and come up trumps.

Someone said that Lee wasted the new ball...DID YOU NOT SEE THAT PLUMB LBW FIRST BALL? But apart from that, yes it was wasted a bit...but it was really high pressure today and not as humid as yesterday, which means that the ball swings first thing in the morning and then in the evening...with very little in-between, there was no swing to be had when the Aussies new ball came around.

Also, I wouldn't worry about Johnson...he was just easing himself in...not wanting to go full throttle too early and break down...tomorrow he may put a bit more in.

Hauritz out, Siddle in...sorted.

(P.S. Did anyone hear Bob Wills say before play that Lee "wasn't the force he once was"? Right before he grabs his first 5 for in England!! Priceless!)

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
ahhhh nev, you make me laugh.

Good performance by Lee. Johnson was pretty rough, but thats not unexpected, he takes a while to come back to form.

To me the side for the first Test is decided except for one spot, Hauritz v North. It's pretty ironic, Hauritz is the bowler who is scoring runs but not taking wickets, while North is the batsman who is taking wickets but not scoring runs.

They'll probably stick with North and play four quicks.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
It was an impressive spell from Lee.
Being able to do it in the 1st test will be an entirely different matter, but at least it showed that its not unattainable.
Good to see him getting some reverse swing too.
I suppose the biggest affirmation though was the start of his 3rd spell. Ponting looked livid and out of ideas and gave him the ball, gesturing that he wanted and expected results - well he got them. 1 spell sealed his spot.
Still dont think he deserves the spot but at least hes found some rythm.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Lee bowled well last night, but both he and MJ wasted the new ball - no swing at all! Man, Hilfy would've come in handy! :P

When I went to bed the score was about 0-90. I thought '5hit, Hilfy is bowling himself into the Test team here!'.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Well congratulations to Brett Lee for his 5 wicket hall.

MJ scores a century and didn't even have a bat in his hands.

Brett Lee just got a michelle. Well that's settled, then. MJ, however was worrying, going for over 5 an over; 0/100 is not pretty.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
Big day for Australia tomorrow: Will Johnson get the Duke ball to swing

Usually, bouncers aimed for between the eyes dont swing.
MJ will want to make a statement - a Pommy batsman unconscious and bleeding on the pitch will be that statement.
=============
So when's he going to start then?

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
even so, 64-0 at lunch wouldnt be where Ponting would have liked or expected.
Lee was unlucky not to get that LB in his 1st over and looked solid(ish).
If they are going to pick him for the 1st test theyd at least be happy with what theyve seen thus far.

Would have liked to have seen Hilfy on this deck though - think hes been very hard done by.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
well done hauritz, your bowling yourself out of international contention!

good tussel by lee and clark though, both economical but havn't taken wickets yet! MJ is a bit concerning but considering this is his first competitive outing in england, he can have an excuse for being rusty.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
North deserves his place for the 1st test at least.

Ill concede that that hypothetically, if we were going to go in with 4 quicks and leave Hauritz out, then id prefer Watson over Lee if Lee was picked ahead of Hilfenhaus and doesnt hit form this game.
MJ, Siddle, Clark and Hilfy would still be the preferred option for 4 quicks but MJ, Siddle, Clark and Watson has more balance than using Lee in that combination.
Trouble being hed just fall apart or break down again.

McDonald? I just dont see him being an ashes all rounder.
North will come good with the bat when the time comes.

Re:Australia Vs England Lion Reply to this message
How is an a somewhat ancient 1 day score relevant to what he is (or isnt) doing now? On what grounds should he be included?
A high score of 78 with an avge of what? 19 or so in what ever tests hes played.
Face it, hes a liability on every level, even domestically.
