Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
Maybe Hilfy will get smashed, but I am yet to see it happen to him with a red ball. Even in ODIs, where is economy rate is poor, he tends to have 6 overs 1-10, before going for 45 from his last 4 overs (powerplay bashing).

So, maybe he could go for a bit if the batsmen back themselves and go for a slog, but normal test-style cricket should see him keep it very tight. I disagree that his swing is early too - he tends to get it to move in the last third, probably not as late at MJ, but late enough tp cause problems (Damien Fleming style).

Lee, from all reports, was getting flogged to all parts before an attempted cut shot found hands, gifting him his first wicket. It was a bit of luck that he capitalised on.

McGain didn't get that luck in SA, it may have changed his fortunes. But I really think he looked too nervous - the selectors 'come and go' spin selections are playing on their minds, no doubt about it - they are killing them before they even start!

Does anyone else wonder what might have happened if that edge from Prince off the bowling of McGain had been just half a foot lower and carried straight to first slip? Assuming it was caught, big assumption, I know!

"Let's hope he gets his bowling consistent as well!"

"We've only been waiting for that for the last 8 years."
------------------------- ------------------------- -

I remember the series against Sri Lanka, the first home series after the Warne-McGrath era...Lee took 4 wickets in every innings of the series...that's about as close as we have come to consistency from him! Maybe we are waiting for something that has already come and gone!

Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
Well, nye...I totally agree with you that North's position shouldn't be under threat (particularly if we don't play Hauritz)...but in his last 3 innings, he has only scored around 40 runs, and you know what our selectors are like!

Different bowlers peak at different times...you've gotta be nuts to say that Clark wasn't at his peak during the 06/07 Ashes. If he did peak earlier, then where the hell was he in 04/05? When we had to put up with Kasper and Gillespie?

I'm just worried that Hilfy might be a bit underdone and he could get smashed, which might hurt his development...maybe it's a risk worth taking? But I will tell you for certain that it is a good headache to have and shows that at least we have depth in the pace department, which is going to come in handy in the coming years, as you say...

Lee is slowly cementing his position.

Those tail- end runs that he consistently scores can be huge in the context of a test.

Let's hope he gets his bowling consistent as well!

Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
North, 2 failures v Sussex - big whoop! It is his form in the tests that matters, and his position in the first XI shouldn't even be under consideration - he's in for sure.

Hilfenhaus offers a lot more to the side than Lee - Lee is fast, that's it. Siddle and MJ are just as fast, so Lee's use is only experience - and all his English experiences have been BAD!

Stuart Clark in his prime? No way in hell is a fast bowler in his prime after 30 - 25-28 is the key period, from that point it is all down hill.

Pick Hilfenhaus ahead of both of these guys, he has so much more to offer, and for so much longer.

My concern is that after this series, we really don't have a challenging test for quite some time. WI and Pak at home next summer should be a 6-0 whitewash, I think it would be the perfect time to keep playing the likes of Hilfenhaus, Siddle and even Bollinger - to get them used to test cricket and the confidence/experience to perform really well, consistently, against the likes of SA and Ind.

Using Lee and Clark in that series would just inflate their wicket tallies before retirement, leaving us to re-build (again) against the top teams.

I'm not sure if you guys are listening to the commentary, but this guy is acting like the score and result really matters! I also laughed when Katich skied one and the commentator shouts "PLEASE, someone catch it!!"

Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
Hes never been a huge TURNER of the ball. His best asset is his variation of pace. He gets a bit of movement through the air too. If he could get his length consistently right hed pull better numbers. Cricket history is full of spinners that may not have been significant turners but relied on other weapons.

adrian, you obviously weren't watching the 20Twenty against Sri Lanka...he beat Sangakarra's bat at least three times (and sanga was on 50 at the time)...nearly got us back into the game...

His batting ability is aside fromt the fact. Hes not expected to be there as a batsman or as an allrounder.
Hes there to spin the ruddy ball. It'd just be good if he could get the process right more regularly.

Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
Why the fu//ck would we do that when McDonald is over there?
That aside, Hauritz aint exactly Jonty Rhodes like in the field either.
if we need spin, weve 3 perfectly good part timers - o.k 2 Katich is reluctant, o.k 1 so is Clarke, but Norths up for it:)
Watsons there as a back up batsman but will fall apart in a breeze so Ferguson will be ready to fly out.

I think the sense of security is WITH Hussey in the team. But I accept that I didn't factor in Hauritz's batting ability when picking the bowlers.

Why bowl Hauritz? He can replace Hussey as a batsman and if real desperate give him a couple overs to lure the poms into false sense of security.

This will get some flack I know.

For the next match relieve Ponting of the captiancy role. Give it to Haddin who has proved he has the arrogance and aggression to be a winning captain. Clarke has had his opportunities but to me just seems to be a bit sooky when the real preasure is on and he crumbles.

What have they got to loose it is only a warm up match?

Re:Sussex v Australia.. Reply to this message
I see it really simple:

North as AR, then Johnson, Siddle, Clark, Lee.

Hauritz would get flogged and Hilfenhaus doesn't offer anything the others don't.

Heed my words!
