The Queen will be so embarrassed with the Poms performance in this ashes series she will repossess the OBE's she so flippantly handed out in the 2005 series and replace them with POQ's.

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
Hahaha.

I'm trying to remember the commentator that was on with Holding last night. Ponting had just moved a deep point and a deep mid wicket out, Holding asked "is that defensive captaincy, or negative captaincy?".

The other guy (Nasser or Lloyd), said "no, it is great, attacking captaincy!" He went on to compare it to Vaughan's style, where he'd dry up 2 or 3 key boundaries. This would force the batsmen to either play more defensively, or to play more risky - either way, it helps the bowler.

So, like anything, captaincy is subjective - here is 2 commentators, with completely opposite views about the same move.

Basically, those that have decided Ponting sucks as a skipper will always see the 'bad' in his moves. Those that consider him a good captain will always see the 'good'.

Thommo is clearly in the 'bad' group - but then again, he is a bowler that knew so little about the game that he asked his captain (in a test) which side of the ball the rough side should be for an outswinger!

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
i would love a white wash for england, payback for our last
humiliation in oz!

but i would rather see a game made of it ,by both sides!

if england won 5-o easily,it would be great for bragging
rights,but that is it!

it would start to bore me,i like seeing a contest!

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
What do you mean nobody wants a whitewash - I bet both sets of fans would love to have a 5-0 result their way! Sure, for the sake of drama, a close series is desireable, but a whitewash is still historical.

I didn't find the last Ashes series boring, that was 5-0. The near 200 to Ponting in Brissie (and THAT ball by Harmy!), the day 5 drama in Adelaide, the Gilly fireworks in Perth - all great memories! By that stage, at 3-0 up and 3 greats set to retire, the focus turned to the whitewash - and that was an event in itself!

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
just being civil.. Yes if harmlessone and vaughan were selected we could be guaranteed of an extra 100 runs and a cheap wicket or two, but we want a contest this time, right? no-one wants another whitewash, that would be extremely boring. So from that perspective thankfully they have been overlooked...

and yes, Lee should stfu and worry about bowling a good length with a bit of speed and movement, any more spells of mid-pitch trundling and he can f-off to ipl, icl or whatever takes his fancy..

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
Me too!

What's got me annoyed however is that Brett Lee is wandering around smiling and saying how disappointed he is for Michael Vaughan.

Brett Lee should STFU and concentrate on learning how to bowl instead of trying to play Bambi and be everyone's best friend.

Back in his day Merv Hughes would have let loose a stream of colloquial invective not expressed his condolences. Brett Lee has got too much time on his hands. Start by getting ready for the contest not sucking up to opposition failures Brett.

Fraid to say Jones career is over now.

What a shame.

England have 3 spinners in the squad for the warm up game though.

Should be a pointer.

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
"has simon jones bowled yet?
I know I harp on about this, but seriously, the carp I copped warrants it. He's just had ANOTHER operation, he will spend 6-8 weeks with his feet up and then start all over again. Can we now admit the guy's finished at international level and move on and never mention him in anything to do with the ashes again?"

Oh, hang on, what's that? He will not bowl a ball ALL summer at ANY level now because it's not healing as hoped??? Again??? And his ecb contract expires at the end of the summer?

But didn't good old steve rhodes say he would bowl in sth africa in march?

Hate to say I told you so, but I did, it was obvious, when the surgeon said he was "ok to resume rehab" that the recovery was going badly. Have dealt with enough surgeons to know their language. poor b@stard, time for him to face the reality that his career is basically over and he has to live the next 50 years with those knees, so best to give them every chance of lasting that long because knee replacement surgery is not pretty..

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
What I meant to say i given the chance Monty just might be the man to break Aus as they haven't played him in how long?

Aus did it with Brad Hogg a while ago and just look at how part timer Katich when forced to bowl took cheap wickets against the S/A team, they had not played much cricket against his bowling and he got wickets. Not saying that Monty will but there is that chance and what have you to loose by playing him compared to not playing him.
+++++++++++
Well, re your last point, we'd have to lose a quickie, and when (if) Flintoff gets back , who would you drop out of him, Broad, Anderson, and Onions, (assuming Bresnan's the fall guy)
England took Adil Rashid, a promising spinner on their WI tour but didn't use him at all. Imho he should have gone on the England Lions tour to NZ where he could have been guaranteed activity. Some good spinners coming through but wouldn't be a good idea to chuck em in at this late stage.

Re:Aus V England 2009 Reply to this message
they hadn't played murali in how long last time and they smashed him all round the park..
doesn't matter how recently they played him, if he's not bowling well it's too risky, also it may depend on the pitches. hogg kat and even bevan took wickets because they were left arm wrist spinners, which when bowled well is hard to play, left arm finger spinners seem to be everywhere now, except here of course..
