Pretty good, but I am sick of getting bagged for that, the camera panned away before I licked it from the concrete, surely that would have redeemed
my public profile? |

Jamesicus, I too saw Verity - I took my grandson to see him, a fine player!
But I will never forget the first time I set my eyes on a young Victor Trumper, I was the principal of his primary school and he was certainly the standout player in the yards at lunch time. |

Okay - my go. As I'm an ex-bowler, I'm not going to do a top 10 as it would ALL be bowlers (apart from the Don). Instead I'm doing an all-time XI
1. Des Haynes
2. Mat Hayden
3. Don Bradman
4. Sunil Gavaskar
5. Garry Sobers
6. Steve Waugh
7. Adam Gilchrist (k)
8. Richard Hadlee
9. Shane Warne
10. Wasim Akram
11. Harold Larwood |

I was a young schoolboy when my father (an avid cricket enthusiast) started taking me to Cricket matches in 1938. I saw my first "Wars of the Roses" (Lancashire vs Yorkshire) match that year (at Bradford, just over the Pennines from my home in Burnley - my first test match that year also: England vs Australia at Headingley). Yorkshire ruled the county cricket roost in those days - my three heroes then were Don Bradman, Bill O'Reilly and Eddie Paynter. I soon added Hedley Verity - he was my father's favorite and the only bowler who was not intimidated by Don Bradman. I only saw Verity play at Bradford in 1938 and Old Trafford in 1939 - then came WW2 and he died from wounds inflicted in combat.

These kinds of lists are always difficult to compose. I will restrict mine to players I actually saw play "in the flesh" (rather than the ones I have watched on TV) 1938-1950 (The Australian ashes tours of England 1938 & 1948; English County cricket - mostly Lancashire and Yorkshire; Lancashire League 1938-1950):
Don Bradman (in a class by himself)
W. J. (Bill) O'Reilly
Everton Weekes
George Headley
Len Hutton
Walter Hammond
Learie Constantine
V. S. Hazare
Hedley Verity
Ray Lindwall |

I don't which is why I didn't nominate anyone.
But it's stupid to say best all time cricketers and then name players from the last 5 years.
Lists like this are subjective and pointless anyway but people keep creating them. |

| Yes, 20 to 1 can do the list for us - or the completely different and in no way a rip off, the Spearman Experiment! |

How do you know that Spofforth was a good bowler???
There are no film archives, and you wouldnt have seen him bowl, so how can you put him in your list.
I agree that such lists are purely random and useless - and should be left for Bert Newton and channel nine. |

Most don't put pre 1970's cricketers in their sides because none of us saw them play.
We know all about Sir Don and Sir Garfield, but it's hard to say if Trumper, Worrell, Spofforth, Larwood and co. were as good or better than guys like Viv, Tendulkar and Warne.
Best to stick to the devil you know. |

OF ALL TIMES, RIGHT?
Why then does no-one consider or include (apart from the Don & Sobers) any cricketer pre 1975 in their stupid *** en list.
Answer: Because most of the kiddies who post here wouldn't know their cricketing @r.se from their elbow and are merely reciting names learned by rote.
Lists like this are subjective and pointless anyway. |

Just for something different, how about a team of the worst players of all time. A team mostly made up of test players with particularly undistinguished careers.
Note: Players from Zimbabwae and Bangladesh are excluded from calculations because they would dominate the team.
1 Chris Roggers
2 Wayne Phillips (not the SA wicket keeper/batsman, but the one test wonder of the same name)
3 Rob Kerr
4 Chris Taveray
5 Rogger Twose
6 Sean Young
7 Geg Dyer (WK)
8 Bryce McGain
9 Jonathan Agnew
10 Martin Snedden
11 Chris Matthews
12th Scott Muller |
