| Who cares who covers it so long as somebody does, the ashes 2005 had a nice pommy bloke commentating.....i think it was the same dude who shouted 'ALOISI' when he scored that famous world cup qualifying penalty shootout goal for Australia. |

I remember as a 9 year old listening to the coverage at night in bed, falling asleep to the soothing tones of the English commentators crying into their tea!
I remember a large group of drunken yobbos in my lounge jumping up and down for ages at 3 am when Boonie and Marsh had the partnership to win back the ashes, until the police showed up. Bloody neighbours had no sense of occasion |

| LCD's have improved their lag rate amazingly lately. I would only go a plasma if I was picking a really big screen, but my living room would'nt suit anything over about 40", I'll be looking at something like a 37" screen, so an LCD will suit me perfectly. |

| If your main interest lays in watching sport then plasma provides a better picture as it has a faster refresh rate, either way new tv's good value but buy before the price rise lol |

I need a new TV now, it keeps dropping out when on pay tv - something wrong with the AV ports.
Oh well, good excuse to convince the bride to allow me to get an HD LCD! |

Yeah MON, 1989 the Ashes came back to us. I remember as a 9 year old listening to the coverage at night in bed, falling asleep to the soothing tones of the English commentators crying into their tea!
I vividly remember being confused whenever they said the score 'England 5 for 2', because it should have been 2 for 5, though either way was distinctly possible with Alderman bowling! |

I meant the integrity of their comments - ie, their opinions are not entirely genuine when they are forced to plug b-grade products from b-grade sponsors!
When you have Jim Courier spruiking some new show on 7 that he has never seen, and is unlikely to ever see, or when you have Ritchie Benaud move away from calling the game to talk up the latest betting odds on betfair, when you know full well he doesn't gamble on cricket, you just lose any credibility you may have had.
I don't mind players wearing uniforms that look more like billboards than shirts, or grounds that have more advertising than actual seats. I even don't mind the obligatory commercial break at the end of each over - I understand. But to insult us with cheap plugs and dodgy product placement throughout the coverage is going way too far IMO. |

it can't be 20 years since AB won back the Ashes...can it?
I seem to remember watching the 90-91 Ashes on ABC also. Possibly they had limited coverage rights then? Maybe someone with a better memory can help. |

The coverage on SBS last time was great. I would have no problems if they had it again - though I do have Fox sports, so it is not an issue for me.
Channel 9's sporting coverage is always too gimmicky for my liking and they love to do the American thing of slapping advertising EVERYWHERE.
Seven stuff the Aus Open Tennis coverage too with all their plugs for upcoming shows.
I realise they need to get money somewhere, but does it have to come at the expense of the integrity of the commentators? |

ABC TV had the 1981 Ashes, and channel 9 had the 1989 Ashes, so the transition was sometime in the 80s. Channel 9 didnt get the rights for 2005 because they were outbid by Foxtel, and Foxtel wanted to charge channel 9 an amount of money they were not prepared to pay??
After the uproar, SBS got it. Hopefully, it happens in 2009 as well.
BTW 2009 tour will be essentially a 50 th anniversary and 20th anniversary of the 4-0 drubbings of England in England. will it be 4-0 again?? |

the only cricket that channel 9 covers is cricket in australia and the world cups.
They think it will stuff up their night time program if they cover the ashes or anything else |

| will be funny that SBS could end up having covered the two potentially closest Ashes series' of all time and Channel 9 missing out... |

Channel 9 will be tied up with other sports such as Wimbledon and Rugby to accomodate the Ashes series, so it
should be great that SBS will be broadcasting it without any
hassles. |

what.... SBS??? what's wrong with Channel 9?? they used to broadcast it...
Also these Ashes will be a close contest so it would be worth it for a commercial station to pick it up...
I don't mind listening to Bill Lawry, Ian Chappell and Richie Benaud so I'll miss their commentary... |

| Last Ashes the PM made a special request and we were able to view the Ashes from England on free to air tv. I wonder if that geek Rudd will do the same or will this be the first Ashes ever all the foxtel money wasters will only get to see??? |
