Vince, I agree, I'm loving this test - can we arrange SA and Eng to come every 2 years!?!

I also loved the debutant for SA, Duminy(?). He got a poor decision last night, and just walked off. Great to see.

I also like SA coming out and talking tough, but not being provocative (ie, not saying such and such is a cheat etc). I don't mind gamesmanship and Sth Africa are very good at it - they just need to start backing it up with a bit of heart!

Brat, Lee is in form I think. He played very well in Adelaide and his no wickets in this game so far is in no way indicative of the way he bowled.

i know it's only been two days but already we are seeing a much more classic test encounter and I take my hat off to the two sides! It's the perfect endorsement of what Test Cricket is and should be.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Most people don't appreciate subtlety. To be a good spinner, you have to turn it a mile every ball. To be a good fast bowler, you have to swing it around or bowl really quick. Or so 'they' would have you believe.
===

Exactly MON.

McGrath was easily the best bowler I've seen. Sure he wasn't fast, but I'd take him ahead of the 'fast' Shoab, Lee or Tait EVERY day of the week.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Watching Johnson yesterday and the way McGrath would bowl it shows you don't need to try to do too many different things, that if you get the ball in the right place enough times the wickets will fall. The more you try different things when bowling the more that can go wrong.

A bowling attack of MJ, Siddle, Hilfenhaus and Krejza has a promising look about it. I just think Lee has had too much on his mind over the last 6 months and that it wouldn't do him any harm to spend some time playing for NSW and see if he can find the form he was in last summer when he had that killer instinct. Be good to see Siddle & MJ open the bowling attack in the 2nd innings as that might just spark something in Lee if he is reverted to 1st change bowler.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
When I first moved down under, the first friend I made was from the Windies, a true blue cricket fan.
What he said about the decline of the once great cricket in his home is somewhat true here.
that selectors spent so much time looking and staying with experience (Brett Lee - Mathew Hayden) that younger players never got a go, and yes the Windies dropped away rapidly.

It seems that yes we need to give experienced players a chance to regain form, but when is a chance too long?

I like the idea of promoting Hilf for the second test, and bring on a new opener to work with SK, I even like Ronchi as a try at WK for the second test - I mean one century (against C grade NZ) doesn't convince me on Haddin.

Just my thoughts

Nope Adrian, I used to hear it all the damn time: "he does nothing with it, he bowls at just 135km, and you know where he is going to put it because he puts it in the same spot every time".

I remember a few people used to wonder how McGrath got wickets too, I guess it doesn't matter HOW, as long as he keeps doing what he's doing!

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Question is was that a choke?

Seen it so many times from the Saffas. They seem to be their own worst enemies. Every series they come here say they are mentally stronger this time. But when the chips are down and they are really looking to be in the accendency they stuff it up like losing 5 quick wickets or dropping a catch or the many other instances that I have seen in the last decade when they just don't have the mental fortitude to win a match.

If they lose here I doubt they can come back to win the series. They should then probably concentrate on getting there first series win at home since the 60s instead.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Can SA fight back - you betcha! This test has swung around and had more twists and turns than a good mystery novel!

I'm half expecting a 50+ score from Boucher this morning and a SA total of around 320 - keeping them well in the match.

If not, you can just see them taking abnother few cheap wickets in the Aussie second dig - whatever it is, they WILL get back into this before too long.

I do think Australia will win the test though.

On the bowling options, it appears most people are sold on Hilfenhaus - good, I hope the selectors have him in mind too.

I'm divided on Lee - on one hand he has 300+ wickets and is the only bowler we have with any real experience. What he can pass on to the other bowlers in terms of knowledge could be vital.

On the other hand, I do like the look and feel of a MJ, Siddle, Hilfenhaus and JK attack - something about it tells me it is a well balanced and dynamic attack, capable of doing some serious damage to batting lineups world wide.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Never throw in the towel doug when it comes to test matches.
At any moment the game can change amazingly as we have seen in this test more than once.

This is why i love test cricket and couldn't give a ? about the other 2 forms.

Tests are so full of variables with many little surprises ready to pounce..

Sometimes it can take just one delivery to change everything dramatically.

Just imagine doug if Johnson was ready to throw in the towel like you were?

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Have to say - for the first day and a half of this match - I was ready to throw in the towel and start to believe Australia was on a fast slide downwards.
But that closing spell by Johnson was amazing. Funny to read some of the comments on "don't like his action" etc.
This is his summer so far and he really is carrying the attack on his back.
I am still not sold on Brett Lee - i really believe (like Hayden) his best days are gone.
I hope that some new blood is brought in for the attack in the second test, as we need to see what Australia can take to England for the Ashes.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
It's been working for a bit longer than just yesterday mip - the guy is vying with Steyn for leading wicket taker in 2008.

South Africa were well on top until the last ten overs, and then absolutely capitulated. The Kallis dismissal was especially disappointing; well set and playing well, he shouldn't be playing shots like that. Duminy might have been unlucky, but the rest were undone by good bowling, good captaincy and their own mental ineptitude. I was impressed by de Villiers also.

Hopefully Johnson can clean up the tail this morning and then Australia can put the game out of reach, giving Krejza a chance to bowl SA out on day 5.

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
Morning everyone. Interesting day yesterday.

Nice spell from MJ. I actually don't like his slingy action but yesterday it worked. Don't know how but it did.

What were South Africa playing at. Belter of a pitch and they just stand there defending. In the end you get bowled.

The only one with any backbone was Amila.

Could anyone else believe what they did ??

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
today's play proves one thing.... test cricket is a two tier comp. with India and Australia... the sport is becoming a bit of a farce like rugby league

with England and South Africa it's always the same old story...

and as for those issues surrounding Hayden, Clark etc.. who cares??? it's highly doubtful the Aussies will ever slip below No.2 at the worst...so don't really see their motivation in having to change the order of things..

I don't see England, South Africa, New Zealand or the WIndies ever returning to their competitive best.. primarily because cricket isn't a financially lucrative sport anymore for their up and coming youngsters....

Re:Aus V SA Reply to this message
These two sides are almost mirror images of each other....I thinks its going to come down which one has the biggest 'ticker'. So far living up to its promise as a top notch test. There are many more twists and turns in store over the next three days. Those calling for Lee's head....he was in the thick of it...i thought his opening spell was brilliant on a 'road'. And his words in the ear of MJ during that spell late in the day I reckon would have contributed to most of those wickets. You dont take 300 test wickets without learning a thing or two....and even if he is not the firebrand he once was....he is in the best position to guide the new young quicks coming into the side....and not too shabby on the performance side either. His advice to the youngsters probably gets more wickets than he will get personally...and without that advice they would probably not get any where near the wickets they get.

IMHO Hughes from NSW WILL play test cricket for Aus. Not sure whether now is the time to blood him though. Stuart Clark is not washed up yet....lets see how he recovers form the bone spurs removed from his elbow (this is not a serious operation....and is quite common amongst baseball pitchers...some of whom have the operation every off season). I think our bowling stocks are quite healthy at the moment. Though Spinners are in the embryonic stages of their careers. Dont expect another 'shane warne' he was a once in a lifetime, maybe even century, spinner.
