I just think that the keeper is a vital roll in the side and the bloke doing it should be the best available.
Haddin WAS the best available when the time came to replace Gilly, but there are options now.
We are replacing our spinners almost every test to try to find the right guy, we wouldn't tolerate a batsmen coming into the side and failing in each of his first 7 tests - why should Haddin get a reprieve?
If he was a kid and they felt it would be worth sticking with him, I'd be fine with that. But at 30 something, he doesn't have the luxury of 5 years to prove himself! |

Lets just hope Haddin can improve over time as Marsh did..
Haddin needs to be given a fair chance to get it right..
Rod Marsh made his test debut in 1970 in his early 20s. He played test cricket for another 15 years.
Haddin is 32 years old. He has been a first class wicketkeeper for over 5 seasons. Haddin is not going to improve |

the problem being scouzer that if we lose to the K1's or dont perform to standard after the debacle that was India, selectors may feel that their hands are somewhat forced.
When Haddin was annointed as the next, who else was there to turn to that could realistically have a real shot at it?
He was the only real option.
Now however, we have several and hes resally under the pump to keep his spot.
Thing with pressure is that not everybody is cut out to handle in the manner they need to.
Lets hope, for his sake, that he can find some way of getting it together because todays the ideal opportunity and if he doesnt pull something out, the targets gonna be huge on his forehead.
Personally, id opt for Paine but i reckon the selectors are eyeing off Ronchi. |

Marsh had a controversial start to his Test career, selected on account of his batting abilities. Sections of the media lampooned Marshs glovework dubbing him Iron Gloves after sloppy catching in his debut Test. His keeping improved over time and by the end of his career he was regarded as one of the finest in the history of the sport.
Lets just hope Haddin can improve over time as Marsh did..
Haddin needs to be given a fair chance to get it right.. |

I don't think Haddin is any danger of being dropped. The Australian selectors have for a long time been far more interested in keeping the team settled (notwithstanding dropping Krezja) and sticking to a stable core of players.
Haddin's biggest problem is he is following a guy who redefined the wicketkeeper's role in international cricket. Gilly was an atrocious keeper when he first came into the Australian team and he got the nod over maybe three or four other superior wicketkeepers on the strength of his batting and we've all seen the flow on effect internationally with all nations looking to unearth competent glovemen that can also bat.
When Gilchrist partnered Langer to save and ultimately win that Test against Pakistan in Hobart early in his Test career the tide turned and as long as the glovework was competent an average keeper could look for selection based on batting prowess. I'll grant (and tip my hat) that Gilly worked extremely hard on his keeping and improved it immensely throughout his career until Father Time caused the body not to be able to do everything required 100%.
Haddin might be in his 30's and a lot of armchair critics might think it's time for a younger man in the job who can be given time to settle in to the team and build a role but obviously the selectors are banking on Haddin's experience in the world's premier Domestic competition to be a factor in him being the best candidate for the time being. I know he's seven matches into his Test career and hasn't shown a great deal of form or confidence but he'll get a good crack at it from the selectors and be given the time he needs.
If he hasn't found form by the end of this summer (before we head to South Africa for the return series) then maybe the selectors will look at other options (Ronchi being the one I'd be looking at personally). |

Richie Robinson was a top player for the Vics.
Your point about being "heir apparent" was certainly true in Rixon, Zoehrer and Haddins' case. |

And more interesting , Ali, is that a lot of these keepers were the heir apparents or bridesmaids who waited in the wings for the incumbents to retire/get injured.
Also Richie Robinson was played as a batsman during the 77 Ashes tour, and Gilchrist played ODI for two seasons before his test selection |

| Fair enough, but in the modern era spanning Australia's dominance for past 15-16 years it has basically been a ceremonial handover. Not unlike LEE taking over from McGrath (although little comparison) as the lead fast bowler. Lee would have to do something pretty spectacular to get dropped as well! |

Not necessarily.
In recent years only Marsh 96 tests, Healy 119 tests and Gilchrist 96 tests, have held the position for any length of time (and maybe Wayne Phillips - 27 tests.
There are 8 others, including Haddin, in between Marsh and Gilchrist who have held the Australian Keepers position each for 13 tests or less.
19. Steve Rixon 1977-85 13
20. John Maclean 1978-79 4
21. Kevin Wright 1978-80 10
22. Roger Woolley 1983-84 2
24. Tim Zoehrer 1985-87 10
25. Greg Dyer 1986-88 6
27. Phil Emery 1994 1
29. Brad Haddin 2008- 7* |

| The problem is the golden baton has been passed from Gilchrist to Haddin. Haddin has served his apprenticeship (in selectors eyes) and unless he goes fishing or goes out for a beer with Michael Clarke he is there to stay. |

Interesting that Symonds has bowled only 1 over whilst Watson has bowled 10 overs.
I don't have a problem with that - but it clearly shows who is the preferred "all rounder". |

Chris Hartley was selected in a recent Australia A tour of India or Pakistan ( somewhere in Asia)
He has performed well with the bat, and scored 50 on a green Gabba pitch against Geeves and Hilfy that probably won Qld the game. Also got a 50 in a low scoring match at the WACA - kept to Kaspa Watson MJ Bichel and is competent.
Dont know why everyone is so obsessed with Ronchi to be honest. |

Wade has taken 2 more catches today off the bowling of Siddle - Pomersbach for 2 & Voges for 0.
Nannes also has the figures of .1 overs, 2nb, 1 wicket - the umpire took him off for bowling 3 full tossers in a row including the wicket ball. |

Wade has taken the most catches so far this season in Sheffield Shield and I think he was also 1 or 2 last year also. The one problem I see for Wade is that Victoria like to use Crosthwaite in the shorter forms of the game because he is a more explosive batsman & Australia likes to be settled with their keeper where he plays all forms of the game.
Thats why keepers like Ronchi & Paine will come into contention before a Vic keeper as they are consistent in all forms of the game. |
