Lets not forget that Australia's greatest ever bowler (shane warnie) was banned for a year under rather dubious circumstances

LOL at Trescothick.... apparently not sick enough to write a book making sensational claims so he can cash in...

Amongst other things, it exposes the double standards that exists when it comes to punishing offenders from Asian and non-Asian cricketing nations..

Given the scrutiny Pakistan have gotten over their antics it still puzzles why the umpires didn't raise any eyebrows at the extraordinary swing generated by the Poms as well as footage of all them mints dropping out of Tresco's trouser pockets...

Maybe the ICC felt it was in the game's best interests for England to win the Ashes and so they turned a blind eye

I'm not going to make excuses but if it does turn out that the ICC decide there's evidence of cheating then Tresco shouldn't be seen as some honest noble gent.

The only reason this story has come out is because Marcus's publisher talked him into it, whether mints were used for advantage in the 2005 ashes or not they're going to sell alot more copies of his book thanks to this story.

All this aside you chaps could really learn a thing or two about losing gracefully, to be fair we've had plenty of practice.

Looking for some lame excuses KWC.
Try rearranging these words into a well known saying.
Black
Kettle
Calling
The
Pot.
SAo it's illegal to put saliva on the ball? Is it illegal to put hair gel on the ball too? No one has had the balls to answer that yet.
Here are some other reasons why Australia lost the Ashes
1}McGrath doing his ankle in
2)Ponting winning the toss and making the wrong call at Edgbaston
3) Only having qne and a half bowlers who could claim the right to be called bowlers.
Warne 40 wickets "19'02, McGrath, 19 @23.15, Lee 20 and 41,1. Tait. 5 and 42 , Kaspo 4 and 62.5, Gillespie (one of the main strike bowlers or so we were told) 30 and 100.00
4) Pietersen being dropped 3 times on the final day of the last Test. On any of those three occassions Aus could have been in a position to run chase a victory.

But the problem is you guys are in denial. You just can't hack being beaten.

Us looking for lame excuses KWC? Don't make me laugh mate.
We won. You lost.
Pathetic load of shytes.

Cricket laws forbid the use of "any artificial substance", specifically to be applied to the surface of the ball.

"According to the laws this is illegal - but we won't outlaw sucking sweets," an ICC spokesman told BBC Sport.
++++++++++++++++++++++
So can anyone tell me if spit is an illegal artificial substance ?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++

"It depends on the evidence and circumstances, so if something is brought to our attention it would be dealt with.

"But where do you stop, for example, if you start to try to stop everyone who is chewing gum?"

+++++++++++++++++++
Ponting please note. And what was Warnie up to every time he prepared to bowl, running his fingers through his gelled (thinning ) hair and then rubbing his hand over the ball.

"You obviously haven't been around long enough to hear all the English supporters say we were sore losers for saying something was fishy in 05. Now its proven. Its cheating, pure and simple. The Aussies would have been lambasted for such a low act."

Yes and I still think you are a sore loser sprarepart. First of all, all the accusations were a shot in the dar-tactic at the time. Many allegations were levelled in the hope that one of them would stick. From the reverse-swing allegations to the heckling of Dizzy, the shower-breaks, specialist fielders to the umpiring. All adds up to sore loser tactics, no?

Same with the olympics. If you look at the thread "britain about to overtake us..." there a tons of sore loser comments in there for you to review in your own time.

Back on topic, as I said before, the story will obviously develop further and we'd like to see where the story ends up. Today is not a holiday because of the Olympipcs (sore loser comment..?), but the last Monday in August has been a holiday for as long as I can remember.

I have read the article twice, so far that article's only connection between the use of the mint and the 2005 Ashes is in the headline. The quotes in the second half of the article are actually referring to the 2001 Ashes. But as I said, the story will certainly develop over the next few days, and Tresco's comments don't look too clever right now.

Waugh - Mint use in England "Rife"
31-Oct-05 02:52AM

Steve Waugh has claimed the practice of bowlers using mints to help them gain reverse swing is rife in English Cricket.

Waugh, in his autobiography Out of my Comfort Zone, said he saw the practice first-hand during a stint with English county Kent in 2002 and it was widely used.

Reverse swing is about the roughness of the rough side of the ball. Conventional swing is about the shinyness of the shiny side of the ball. Improving the shine on the shiny side of the ball does not help the ball to reverse swing!

Nothing fishy either, the only Aussie bowler who knew how to bowl reverse swing was Shaun Tait ... and he too got reverse swing. If I remember correctly, Bret Lee learned the art of reverse swing bowling after 2005 ashes.

The Aussies would have been lambasted for such a low act.

Where did I say you couldn't get Reverse Swing without mints. I said it was obvious something fishy was going on when the English were managing to reverse it after 18 overs. Far too early and very dodgey.

We should boycott the next Ashes. That'll cost the ECB quite a bit of coin.

For those that don't think it was a big deal, take a look at the margin of defeat and tell me that it didn't make a difference.

So it's okay to cheat as long as no-one catches you and it doesn't matter because it exceeds the pommy proclaimed statute of limitations on cheating?

What about the indignant denials at the time - when they all knew they were lying?

The result should be over-turned by the ICC and apologies from the Captain (who claimed he won the ashes by being a brilliant tactician), the ECB and the Palace must be immediately forthcoming!!

Okay - cheating, but the phrases "come and gone" and "spilt milk" come to mind. Tres also admitted he used the mints during the 2001 Ashes series, and England lost.

In 2005 with or without mints, England played (only very slightly)the better cricket and we lost. Get over it.

Bloody Cheats! Been using them at least since 2001.

Australian paceman Nathan Bracken was verbally lashed by Jones after the 2005 series for suggesting the use of mints was common in English cricket, but he has always said he was misquoted by the media, and did not want to re-enter the debate yesterday. It's also believed the rest of Bracken's teammates have not seen the funny side of Trescothick's claims.

Trescothick, who also used the mints during the 2001 Ashes, recalled a comical moment in the Headingley Test: "For the first time, as I dived to gather the ball at square-leg, I landed on my side and a shower of Murray Mints spewed out of my trouser pocket all over the grass right in front of the umpire.

"Fortunately neither he nor the two batsmen seemed to take much notice as I scrambled around on all fours trying desperately to gather in the sweets before they started asking awkward questions."

Trescothick was the second-highest run scorer in the 2005 series behind current England captain Kevin Pietersen. However, it was English bowling that was credited with the boilover, as Australia's batsmen looked all at sea against a barrage of deliveries swinging wildly in both directions.

The 2-1 win by England was their first Ashes victory in 18 years and the entire squad received OBEs or MBEs.

Calm down Spare Parts spelt incorrectly, where did I defend cheating? Also, the olympics were brought up rather ignorantly by a fellow countryman of yours, I figured I should respond to set the record straight. By the way, you can reverse swing without mints, it just doesn't work as well :)

"on my first day in the field I got a whiff of the mentality of some of the guys when i was offered some extra strong mints from a teammate, which I thought was a nice gesture to make me feel welcome," Waugh wrote.

"Seconds later, as I crunched into a chalky coin-sized lozenger, a startled voice said, "What the hell are you doing? Don't chew the mints."

"Why not? They taste pretty good pal," Waugh replied.

"You're wasting them," said another player.

"You're supposed to suck them and then use the saliva to polish the ball. It's the best ball-shiner available".

"It was the last free mint I was offered. Evene though it was all the rage on the circuit, surely if a mint was that important it was a sign that all wasn't well".

"It was also a source of amusement for the lads to regularly tease me about how good the mints tasted during play while I chewed my gum".
