Off the BBC

A combination of Shane Warne and Australia's fast bowlers brought England crashing to defeat in the second Test in Adelaide.
One bowling weapon that aided their cause was the same one used so effectively by England 18 months ago.
This time, Brett Lee found reverse swing in the heat of south Australia.

So, if and when Bing brings out his autobio and admits to using zinc on the ball, are we supposed to say
"Hey I knew something wasn't quite right in Adelaide." |

Quote from the CourierMail
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++
ACTING captain Michael Clarke has laughed off revelations England's 2005 Ashes upset over Australia had more to do with Marcus Trescothick's sucking "murray mints" than his bowlers' reverse swing.
Clarke, who will lead Australia in his first series against Bangladesh in Darwin beginning this weekend, was bemused by Trescothick's admission in his recently released autobiography Coming Back To Me he sucked the breath fresheners to help him keep shine on the ball during the Ashes series.
The former England opener said it was his responsibility to keep the shine on the ball during the Ashes series using his minty spit that worked like "Mr Sheen". Clarke said today what transpired in 2005 was in the past.
"Marcus has written a book, hasn't he?," smiled Clarke.
"Well .... good luck, like I say, that's in the past.
"Right now we're looking forward to playing the Deshis (Bangladesh) up in Darwin.
"We'll get our chance in the next 15 months to play against the Poms back in England."
Asked if Trescothick's admission finally explained why England's bowlers were able to get reverse swing while the Aussies couldn't, Clarke said it wasn't a concern.
"It actually doesn't bother me at all right now," said Clarke, in Brisbane with the Australian squad for a two-day camp before three one-day games in the tropics.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ +
As Mr Bingle says
Clarke said today what transpired in 2005 was in the past.
And as chucker might say
Build a bridge and get over it. |

If I may interrupt the proceedings here for a second: There are two point which IMO have not received any attention yet:
1. The mint was used in order to preserve the shine on the ball for longer than it would have been likely otherwise. It wasn't actually responsible for CREATING the swing in the first place, but to keep it swinging for longer.
2. There are always substances added to the ball, most of which can not be avoided at all. Sunscreen, Hairgel and "Lip-Zync" are the most likely, and given that most chewing gums on the planet are either Mint, Doublemint or "extra-Mint" flavoured, again this will be hard to police if ever.
What I am not comfortable with is that someone goes out and deliverately tests various substances and then settles on one particular one for the required effect. I think that Tresco needs to be asked what motivated him for writing what he did. But then, he HAS been diganosed with mental illenesses, so...
Another thing here: Are we discussing the 2005 Ashes, or are we discussing Tresco's methods to keep the ball shiny? The two are not necessarily linked IMO. |

| I'm not implying that, netstar. After all, Trescothick didn't do it for his own bowling. Warne did it, so the quicks would benefit. |

lol... for those going on about Warne's hair gel... no one has been able to prove that a doctored ball helps in regards to spin... only to swing...
it's doctored pitches that help spin not the condition of the ball... |

| Balls have been rubbed, licked, lubricated and tampered with for ages. If the Aussies dont do it there is a defined dysfunction |

Gotta say, this has all got a bit silly.
Do we start inspecting players pockets before they go on the field? Their mouths, perhaps?
Dictating what they can have for lunch?
Limit the sugar content of their sports drinks?
Have a supervised hair washing before taking the field?
There's nothing to stop other teams from adopting this tactic, just as there is no stopping doctoring pitches to suit the home team. It's how well each team adapts to the conditions they are presented with, that decides the contest. |

| So because one of your players has admitted that your team systematically cheated by having a plan to apply the mint to the ball then the Aussies must have done the same. Nice argument. |

Re:England cheated to win ashes! Reply to this message
Was Warne rubbing the ball with hair gel cheating???
Answer : How many English batsmen during the 2005 Ashes series were dismissed by a Shane Warne delivery that moved a great distance with reverse swing???
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ +
Answer to that Chucker is;
How many Australian batsmen were dismissed by Marcus Trescothick bowling?
You rub hair gel, sun tan cream, vaseline, whatever, into one side of the ball. That side gets tacky and picks up all the cr@p, and that abrades the surface. It doesn't have to be the reverse swing bowler who does it. |
