Re:England cheated to win ashes! (PREVIEW)
And before many Aussies start having a go at me, I live here in Australia and have all my life, I witness all to often how Australia tends to be quick to point the finger at other nations about cheating, yet their memories seem to forget the likes of Trevor Chappell with his under arm incident,
Point proven to a tea and here i was thinking i was going to be proven wrong. Mind you Yarz took his time getting to it. Maybe consider changing the name to Yawn champ :) |

And before many Aussies start having a go at me, I live here in Australia and have all my life, I witness all to often how Australia tends to be quick to point the finger at other nations about cheating, yet their memories seem to forget the likes of Trevor Chappell with his under arm incident, or even their great Shane Warne who has to be the worst example to kids growing up wanting a role model. He exemplifies the art of cheating in so many different ways.
He was guilty of match fixing along with Mark Waugh(how many others were also in amongst it and how many other games or tornaments did they do it but werent found out for it)
He was guilty of cheating on his wife but not only that, he was also cheating on the woman he was having an affair with along with others.
Murali is labelled a cheat cos he apparently chucks the ball so his wickets dont count, but even though Warne is a great bowler, there are countless times I have seen him get wickets that were questionable by shoddy umpiring. Even replys and other commentators on nine would feel over the years a lot of the umpiring in this country has been rather in the classification of cheating.
World Series Cup cricket was riddled with bodgy decisions and underhand cash transactions to umpires and others for the sake of getting Australia to the finals to get bigger crowds, to make more money.
Britian does better in the Olympics and straight away its because some of the coaches were from here. Amazing how those coaches couldnt get a job here and were offered a better job and money over there.
Australia loses when they are not good enough. England loses and its fans and media blame their players or coaches or heirachy etc etc..something Australia seems to forget.
There are more whingers in this country than ive met poms in all my life. I work with people who complain about everything. The price of fuel, food, wages etc etc..Go overseas and see how others live. |

I find it interesting how whenever Australia loses in something, they are excuses and those who beat them must have cheated in someway.
In all my time of playing cricket, and supporting it, many fast bowlers or medium pace bowlers have done their best to keep the shine on the ball or keep one side shiny and the other relatively rough for the purpose of swing.
Whenever an Aussie bowler has bowled and it goes through to the wicket keeper, he passes it on to a slips fielder who handles it, then shines it and passes it on to gully and on to mid on and then back to the bowler. Just about every Aussie player chews gum and I am sure over the years they have put saliva on the ball, then shined it. Geez, I use to just spit on it and rub it on my pants to try to maintain some sort of shine. It may have some slight affect to the ball, but not much. The bowler still has to pitch it right and hope the seam hits the way you want to get any sort of reverse swing. If my memory serves me correct, Harmison and Flintoff were bowling with express pace, digging in short and up around chest height a lot to the Aussies, then Jones would pitch it outside off stump making the batsmen play forward with the ball swinging away to the slips hoping to catch an edge. All cricketers chew gum or eat mints so if Trescothick admitted that it helped get reverse swing, then where did he get the idea from, do we back date to where this tactic originated from and penalise those who have done it and take away results from those they played for. Pakistan admitted using a bottle top coin to notch into the seam of the ball in the days of Imran, Wasim and Waqar etc etc. Ball tampering has been ripe in cricket for years, even Mike Atherton was caught out picking at the seam with his nail.
When you bowl 25 overs in a test match and have no wickets for 70 plus runs, im sure an advantage or ideas you have to help get one will be used. |

Putting all partisanship and team loyalties aside (well, trying to ) for some act to be classified as illegal/ cheating the ruling authorities , in this case the ICC ,must have the means and the wherewithal to stop it happening.
They have already conceded that the sucking of any sugar based confection on the field of play can hardly be monitored or regulated, so nothing can be done about it. |

* but legal - at the time.
I think the spirit of the game is more important than the technicalities, but rules are rules.
It doesn't matter that they "won" them now, in terms of result but they (nor anyone that supports those actions) should wear the shame of it too. |

What about that other famous Ashes-winning tactic (insert wordplay on "tictac" here) that the Poms used in the face of Australian cricket dominance - "Bodyline"?
1. It WAS a totally legal act.
2. Despite "being within the rules of the game" You would find few that would suggest that Bodyline was "in the spirit of the game".
3. It was a long, long time ago! Yes but memories of unsporting play keep modern players (and officials honest - theoretically)
But point taken, the underarm incident, whilst unsportsmanly and distasteful, was not an illegal "play". They needed to hit a six, why not bowl it full pitch & widish outsite off stump? I agree that it was cowardly, but legal.
Much like Collingwoods controversial runout decision.
However, ball tampering IS illegal. For shame. |

good to see that everyone is still getting along so happily with each other as the last time i was here :)
personally i don't really care about this issue and if anything it should be a reason to have a good laugh at the poms.
one thing i have been wondering about though! a lot of the non oz fans have said that it's in the past and probably wouldn't have changed the end result either way and that it's not "specificaly" an illegal act and many have even questioned if it was actually a tactic in the 05 Ashes.
Why then is there mention every month pretty much on this board the "Underarm bowling incident"?
1. It was a totally legal act.
2. Being within the rules of the game you can't actually say that it was against the spirit of the game.
3. It was a long, long time ago!
4. Kiwis are renowned for "choking" (sorry couldn't help myself)and there was no gaurantee that Hadlee would have hit the required runs.
So it seems to fall in the same category as the "Pomgate" incident that this thread is about. Apart from the fact i suppose that the mint issue was a premeditated and sustained act and not a one off spur of the moment decision! |

Resulting in Mcgrath being unable to play.Cricket Australia have announced a Jihad on anyone connected with the British confectionary industry.Gordon Brown has responded by banning the import of Tim Tams and has urged his people to take to the street and burn copy's of their Rolf Harris record collection. |

Finally, Thresco does say mints were used in 2005 - NO QUESTION.
Thanks for an actual quote wp, one actually from Thresco rather than a journalist's opinion/overview... 13mins 45 seconds into interview the subject comes up.
He admits in as low key a way as possible, but goes on to say that they weren't used when conditioning a reverse swing ball and mints makes no effect when trying reverse, presumably it's more about the rough side of the ball but I'm no expert on the effects of mint on leather.
He says it's never been proven, I think there should be tests to see if an advantage is gained and whether rules are necessary if the advantage is measurable. |
