There could be many reasons for his slump, most of them are pure speculation.
Just one point on the bat: NZCA complained about the Kahuna in early 2005. the matter was finally resorted in late 2006. In the meantime, Ponting was allowed to use the bat until the MCCs investigations had reached a conclusion. |

As per this ruling Ponting - and many others too, have not used bats contrary to the rulings of the Laws of Cricket set down by the MCC.
After October 1, then, yes this would be the case. Ponting and others are within their rights to use said bats, the fact that they haven't since the complaint has said alot, as has his batting performance in 2006 2007, sans offensive bat, and prior to this slump which admittedly could be attributed to the demands of the media over the tour by India (we all know how that went) and the fact that the IPL is just hit and giggle (and especially as they had only a 5 game cameo).
Ponting is assured test selection, hayden, hussey and the others still have to prove worthy, and it proved that they have. So I can imagine that their value system proves that test cricket to them is king - and more power to them. That's my position also.
Although there is a test series coming up in the WI, unfortunately for that great cricket nation, it will prove to be more of the same.
The Aussies have had their well paid break. Look out! |

Sorry to spoil your little one-(wo)man party, Kipsy, BUT:
"The law change was brought about to cover (from what I can gather) bat HANDLES. This has nothing to do with Ricky Ponting as the trolls that infest this board well know."
I know, it's just pure coincidence that a law concerning the handles of a bat was just amended.
However, you should know yourself that the bat Ricky Ponting was using (the kahuna) was deemed illegal by the ICC after a complaint by NZCA. That complaint was concerning the re-inforcement that the Kahuna had in form of a sticker. The glue that was used for it was deemed to re-inforce the bat itself.
" The Bats may be used in English professional cricket until 30 September 2008.
So the bats are banned for use by all BUT an execption has been made for the Poms. Wouldn't ya know it!"
That's becasue the domestic season is already under way in England and nowhere else. It would be rather strange to ask a number to players to change the bat in midseason. Besides, the bats will not be used in internationals.
Just make sure that Ricky sticks to the rules this time, okay?
Finally, you are correct in noting that the ICC constantly comes up with crooked rules just to p|ss off Kipsy from Woombawoomba :-)
Kissy, darling... |

You both have made your point and there is plenty of evidence to back it up. He has had a bad patch. The bowlers he really struggled with are the pace bowlers that can swing the ball through the air, and the spinners who he hasn't been able to read this summer. They are all great bowlers and Ponting is certaintly a great batsmen.
If he gets his form back it will count in my eyes. I won't be claiming the attack is weak. Its pretty easy to judge a good bowling attack and Ambrose and Walsh were certainly not weak. I would just like to see him be able to adjust to where he was making his mistakes this summer. All the batsmen will do it sometime during their career. They're all human.
I'm neither a bowler or batsmen so there is no bias in my opinion but the ball is in the bowlers hand. If he is good enough to deceive the batsmen he'll get his wicket. That's where you see such great batsmen though. They've been able to combat the bowler on the result they achieve by reading the bowler well and capitalise by posting up the big scores which Ponting has done many times. I think he's second on the list for the most centuries scored in Test match cricket. He'll be No. 1 in a couple of years for sure. No less than 40 centuries by the time he retires.
Just came across an interesting website on his stats. http://stats.cricinfo.com/statsguru/engine/player/ 7133.html?class=1;template=results;type=allround
It includes only 1 century with Ambrose and no Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis. Ponting took a while to get going.
By the way, there was no Waqar Younis for that 197. Akram was at the end of his career and all Akhtar had then was pace. Ponting has no worries with pace. He uses it well. Its an advantage to him because he is such a great timer of the ball.
Ponting will be back though. You all seem to like him quite a lot and I agree his slump won't last long at all. |

Ponting averaged over 50 in the Windies against Ambrose and Walsh in 1998-9, so I would dispute that he struggles against every decent bowling attack
He has scored 4 centuries in six tests in the Windies and averages 98 there BTW |

Murali himself has said only Lara ever played him better than Ponting. Ponting has never struggled against him.
You say it will be interesting to see how he goes, yet I can guarantee that if he scores thousands of runs you will claim the attack is weak.
Last season was the first form dip Ponting has had in about 7 years, yet he still scored a century and 3 or 4 fifties in the tests and THREE centuries in the ODI's!
I hope he gets his form back in the Windies, but like I said, that won't count in your eyes anyway as the side is 'weak'. |

It will be interesting to see how Ponting goes over the next 12 months to 2 years. He has only faced 2 quality bowling attacks in his time as captain and virtually failed both time. As well as when he faces Murali.
Ponting's problem lies with the simple fact that he can't read the bowler. He can't pick when Murali or Singh were giving him one that moved away and couldn't adjust quick enough for it. Likewise with Sharma. Sharma had his measure in the series just gone by.
Ponting is nervous when he comes in to bat and likes to get on the front foot early. He's only fresh at the crease and will move his back out to drive without his leg coming with it. This leave him very prone to a catch behind and when the ball swings in, he gets stuck on his crease. He doesn't read the inswinger well enough and can't get his bat down in time for it.
If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself. |

The law change was brought about to cover (from what I can gather) bat HANDLES. This has nothing to do with Ricky Ponting as the trolls that infest this board well know. It has been brought about by concerns about Gray-Nicolls bats with carbon handles. Note: GRAY-NICOLLS not Kookaburra.
MEMO TO: All ICC Members
All Members of Emirates Elite Panel of Umpires and Referees
DATE: 26 February 2008
Gray-Nicolls Bats with Carbon Handles
ICC has been advised of an agreement reached between MCC and Gray-Nicolls in relation to a bat manufactured by Gray-Nicolls that has a carbon fibre handle (the Bat).
The Bat is marketed under the name ‘FUSION’. Please note that it may appear in the professional game with different stickers.
MCC has ruled that carbon fibre handles do not comply with the Laws of Cricket and that the Bats are illegal.
MCC and Gray Nicolls have agreed that:
• The Bats will not be used in Test or One Day Internationals or International Twenty 20 Cricket with
immediate effect.
• The Bats may be used in English professional cricket until 30 September 2008.
So the bats are banned for use by all BUT an execption has been made for the Poms. Wouldn't ya know it! |

As if on cue, the MCC today officially changed Law 6 to make reinforced bats (e.g with graphite) illegal. It comes into effect on 1 October 2008.

Seems like it. It must have just been a dream when punter scored millions of runs against them whilst leading his side to a 5-0 clean sweep. And another when he scored millions of runs in taking his side to a third straight World Cup title (and his 'useless' captaincy remains unbeaten in World Cup games!).
Vaughn is lauded as a great skipper, yet it appears the 2005 Ashes win was little more than a fluke. Ponting is derided by many (particularly English, this was evident when they toured here in 2006/07, their supporters said some stupid things about the guy!). Yet his winning ratio is the best in HISTORY in test cricket and his ODI record is damn good too.
He is overseeing a massive generation change in the side, yet has kept them cruising along nicely. He is also regarded by those under him to be a sensationl leader - and they are in a far better position to judge than any of us! Lehmann even said he was the best captain he ever had - and boof played under some fine skippers. |

Nye
all world cricket ceased to exist since 2005 in the minds of these Pommy cricket supporters. It seems to be this timeloop when 2005-8 fails to exist, with the exception of Punters bad run in one day games and T20 cricket
They still think England has the Ashes, and Vaughan is a great cricket captain |

| Ponting's 'illegal' bat, isn't that the graphite bat? If so, then that hasn't been used since the 2005 Ashes tour. |

Correct. Vuaghan was injured, that was his reason.
Ponting was scared and overcome with monetary emotions, that was Pontings reason.
Every 5-year-old knows which reason is valid and which reason is not valid.
So I guess that makes you a four-year-old girl, Kipsy... |

Ponting avge 62 sr 90 -> Illegal bat
Vaughan avge 20 sr 67 -> Legal bat
And Vaughan never chose to skip on a tour or beat up bouncers who are there to protect party-goers from chavs and rednecks.
"Vaughan came home early from Pakistan to undergo a second operation on his right knee in three years but was in upbeat mood before the team departed."
Yes I wemember now. I said to the lads "So wong fellas - I'm off to the Caribbean have a good twip see you when you get back." (limp, limp) oops wrong leg (limp, limp) |

You are right about conclusive proof.
The ball hit the glove, went into the air and he collected the ball - before it touched the ground - and subsequently held it therefor validating the catch being completed in the air as there was no issue with contact with the boundary.
Sounds pretty conclusive. Shame it wasn't paid. I have to agree it was a bad decision there by the umpire.
I still don't understand why the bat sticker was deemed illegal. If they were to pursue the case, I could see how it could be revoked. Does it provide a genuine advantage?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/4472297.st m
Wasn't the issue about it being an overly large advertisement anyways?
That is what i thought the issue was really about, not necessarily the graphite reinforcement.
Which really only makes the bat less susceptible to breakage really.

erm, and how exaclty does Ponting play Cricket if he doesn't even use a legal bat?
Every match in which he used illegal bats should be awarded to the oppostion and Ponting's score should be changed to 0* and he should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
This is just like a athletics relay team having their medals revoked if one of the team members failed a doping test. Fair is fair. |

And I would safely assume you have the accuracy of a Harmison over starting an Ashes campaign |
