I think that the ipl is bad for international cricket because they own the players and it may be hard to release for international duty players would want hundreds of thousands of dollars for 6-8 weeks of cricket but when you are overseas for a tour you can have 3 onedayers a twenty twenty and three test

RE: previous post

obviously not a fan of the great game.

Cricket is about creating opportunities, dealing with pressure and building a framework for victory.

It takes class, talent and effective strategies to effect an outcome. Part of the allure of this is the fact that the contest doesn't become evident until the 3rd or 4th day. There are environmental issues such as the quality or type of the wicket, the size of the boundaries etc and the mental state of the opposition.

Having one guy like Gilchrist go out & smack a few boundaries doesn't exemplify the how the game is best played.

No offense, but it does sound a little like the publicity and exposure that Dennis Rodman got in the NBA was the best thing for the NBA. It hard to find other that agree (except Rodman that is).

But, hey if it is your thing, go for it.

The IPL is indeed the coolest thing to happen to cricket for a long time. I think its main feature is to show, just how stagnant the 50 over game has become. I think the other great thing is to demonstrate that people are starting to follow players more than teams as well.
That includes as an Australian the World Cup and the traditional tri-series fixtures every summer.

I think that the 20 over game needs to be given much heavier focus in future. For the game in Australia - having state 20-20 games as curtain raisers for international 20-20 games seems a great idea.

Would love to see an Australian based team enter the IPL (under the same auctioning system as the current teams).

We talk a lot more about the IPL at haveabowl.blogspot.com... Come along and post on our forums if you want. GO MUMBAI!

Re:Future of IPL. Reply to this message
And what are players going to do in the other 300 days of the yr that the IPL is on?

I can't see many 25yr olds quiting a promising career, the chance to captain their country, lead the team to an Ashes victory or win the WC over a tournament that is over in less then 2months.

Different if ya Shane Watson and no one wants ya playing for Australia and this form of the game is the only way ya can play without picking up a new injury.

Re:Future of IPL. Reply to this message
ICC is going to listen when the cash rich boards like CA and BCCI ask and CA will ask to avoid premature retirement of playrs.Pakistan, SriLanka and West Indies players are going to put lot of preeures on their boards.
Sure, representing their country is a great honor, but a boat load of cash is a very powerful incentive. So the best option is to open up a window, a win win situation.IPL is here to stay.Good Day!.

"Each franchise has a $5 million cap for their team, and the contracts are for three years, so when they bid for players at the auction they will use up all of their cap - there will be no money to buy other players later."

I doubt there will be an increase in pay - why would any team owner pay $2 million for 1 player out of a $5 million cap. Doubt there will be any trading done until these contracts run out after the 2010 series.

"all contracts are flexible"

depends on the wording of the contract or how much the player wants to pay to break it

Re:Future of IPL. Reply to this message
1stly - CA doesn't control the cricket schedule for the yr and the countries who play cricket. It's actually the ICC who run things and work out the time from for tours and stuff - and since next yrs cricket schedule is already in place it would be hard for them to open a window for the IPL. They have the schedules drawn up for a few yrs at a time, and prior to the tournament starting the ICC said they wouldn't create a window for the IPL - so nothing to do with CA.

The IPL contracts are for 3 yrs, so there probably won't be much bidding going on next yr since most players are signed up already. Nations like England will be able to play next yr, while SA, Sri Lanka and Australia have tours at that time I do believe so there players won't be available, but will be there the following yr.

Its a fun tournament to watch, but nothing beats watching a test match between countries, where there is a strong history, tough battles and a true test of character. The IPL is fun, but its 6 weeks out of a yr, and without test & ODI's, cricket would die because it would not survive based on 1 6-week tournament a yr. Plus, most players aren't going to give up international careers, the chance to represent their country and a steady income from a CA contract to play what could be 4 games of cricket. Later in their careers they might when they are around the 35-36yr+ nearing the end of their career, but not as 25-30yr olds.

After viewing few matches I think IPL is a very successful tournament, best thing ever happened to cricket. I think most of you are in agreement with this view even if you don’t want to accept in public.
Here is my prediction, now the owners have realized the full potential of IPL and next year players’ pay packs are going gto sky rocket and there is going to be a big bidding war. Top players will get at least 2 million dollars.CA has no choice and they need to accept the reality and open up a window for this tournament if they want to retain the top talent.
Billionaire owners are going to do everything to make their teams a top notch one. Here race, religion or country of origin is irrelevant, spectators are behind their teams, players are thoroughly enjoying it and the competition is fierce.
