Re:IPL Reply to this message
Dissent by iconic players (regardless of nationality)doesn't do the game any favours.

Sportmanship has a lot to do with recognising that it is just a game, meeting the challenge on the field (but within the code of conduct) and of the opposition.

Holding the the field officials in contempt in order to appeal to the the third umpires box in the hope of using some sort of controversial technicality compromising the umpires future employment.

Obvious errors are just that, and they happen. But they do even out. Why, because the umpires are genuinely trying to be impartial, & often it is the circumstances that make finite decisions difficult, not some bias.

If a player makes a split second error in a shot, perhaps leading to a lofted shot to the wrong delivery, these things happen.

The weight of dismissal, however, is not necessarily evenfor the two parties here. The player goes to the shed, the umpire to potential suspension.

The umpires have a crucial role in the maintenance of sportsmanship in the game, they turn a blind eye to cursing when the bowler gets smacked for six.

And they are in the middle, standing in the hot sun and glare for hours, sometimes unlike a new batsman. Their contribution shouldn't be sold off over a couple of honest mistakes, lineball decisions or off days. And especially when they have to make the tough decisions like Darrel Hair had to make in instance with ul-Haq.

It's a game ... be a professional & get on with it.

Re:IPL Reply to this message
Wasn't all that about a "gentlemen's agreement" between two representative captains.

If you recall there was inconclusive proof either way when it came to replays. We have also examined the rules and seen that the ball touching the ground after the catch was completed ruled out any other nonsense that was thrown up there.

Seeing as the umpire had been advised that in such circumstances the captains had previously agreed that - under the umbrella of the test series - the captain would ask the player for his honest opinion.

And then if the captain himself felt satisfied (that is he thought in all honesty that it was taken cleanly and could vouch for the player's honesty, that he would indicate to the umpire his position?

Isn't that acting in the spirit of the game? Isn't that what that means? If Ponting made that up on the spot, and said " well we'll let you get one later - ha ha" that would smack of unsporting play.

"I read that warnie tore him a new one for 'lacking spirit of the game..."

Taking the fielder's word for a catch no longer falls under the umbrella of acting in the "spirit of the game" - whatever that means. it can cost you a test match.

Anyways what did you think about ganguly refusing to walk?

Re:IPL Reply to this message
Guys. this is all very well and I'm sure that , for you, it's a very interesting debate, but for everyone else on here it may not be so. Now while you're having your political differences of opinion I do feel you should consider there are some members here, myself being one, who want to discuss the IPL and feel their message will get lost in , what is to us, an irrelevant debate.

"Unfair .That sounds like someone who has no real answer.. Why is it unfair."

I dont claim to have one. It is unfair because you are selectively looking at the weaknesses of capitalism without looking at its benefits or the weaknesses of other competing ideologies.

"So what you are basically saying is if you are rich you can do as you please, that you no longer have to follow the basic laws of humanity"

You are putting words in my mouth. just coz someone espouses capitalism does not imply that he or she is insensitive or not empathetic to those less fortunate. For all the hot air that is blown against the capitalists, what have the socialists done to date? Other than pretending to care about the poor and sitting on their fat asses waiting for an ideology to work which they found after 150 years, "works only in theory"!

Re:IPL Reply to this message
"which in a way you are correct but only in the short term not the overall picture of humanity"

Of course its in the short run. In the long run aren't we all dead? There is too much uncertainty in the long run. Leave aside man-made history. Even evolution of life forms are contingent on events that may or may not happen. The average human lifetime is a good starting point to make decisions about whether a society should be capitalist or socialist.

"Your choice of telivision as an example is rather dubious as many have said t.v has in some ways retarded human developement."

I'm sure there are many others who will argue otherwise. so lets not go down that path. In any case, to just focus on television and not focus on its influence on other technologies would be every narrow way of looking at things

That is not unique to just capitalism. It is widespread, happens in families, between CEO's and shareholders, socialist countries. its everywhere. To single out capitalism for not corresponding to values held by general society is unfair.

Unfair .That sounds like someone who has no real answer.. Why is it unfair.
Why shouldnt capatalism correspond to the general norm of values.
So what you are basically saying is if you are rich you can do as you please, that you no longer have to follow the basic laws of humanity..interesting ..

Re:IPL Reply to this message
what's that got to do with anything he asked?

Absolutly nothing and it took him 5 days....

The intent of the industrial revolution was largely betterment, not survival. So evolution would have limited relevance in progress and change. Even if I were to buy that progress and change is evolutionary, an aspirational human being would not be willing to wait a million years for television to "evolve".

You are thinking only about the short term I was talking about the evolution of humanity from the first spark of consciousness(some say around 1.5-2 mill yrs ago).which should have been obvious given my cave man anology..and it was in dissagreement to your choice that money has been the impetus to evolution , which in a way you are correct but only in the short term not the overall picture of humanity.
Your choice of telivision as an example is rather dubious as many have said t.v has in some ways retarded human developement.

"The industrial revolution was a forgone conclusion, evolution dictates that progress and change will happen"

Says who? There is no such evidence. Progress and change may not happen at at all if there is no stimulus. The biggest stimulus is incentives and money. don't pass off an opinion as fact.

You are doing the same thing..I would say survival has been the impetus of evolution over the last million or so yrs..I could guess that a five dollar note was not going to protect mr cave man from the saber tooth..

To the issue of capatalism -my major concern is when the values held by organ/i/s/ ations holding economic and political power no longer correspond with the values held by the general society. And we are seeing more of that every day..

The only cra/pp/ing on these boards lately seems to be coming from your direction, so hows about you leave all the faecal matter inside the cavity in your head and stop speaking out of your somewhat sizeable ar/se. Now be gone, theres intellectual concepts to be discussed by intelligent, open minded people.
The rest of us dont go around showing the world our ar/se holes so go put your little leather balaclava on, ask your master for the keys to the big box and stop showing us yours.

"no, it just makes you a fool and moron, an ignorant one at that.
Oh , i see where your model Indian players are showing their exemplary conduct on the field again - Harbhajan deciding that its o.k to slap another person - SERIAL OFFENDER THAT ONE.
Yeh, this is great for the game of cricket this IPL sh!t!!!!"

See you're bumbling and c/r/a/p ping all over the board again. You went from everything being fixed in IPL TO Karl Marx TO how I am a part of the caste system TO Bhajji's slapping. Stay focussed dude :) It seems to me you know a lot of stuff. Now you have to find a way to process it logically :)

Re:IPL Reply to this message
"Not in the last 10 years, and it's all about to fall in a heap."

Probably true. But it has been an engine of innovation and growth for the last 40-50 years. The last 5-10 years has seen globalisation become prevalent and other countries playing the catch up game rather than the US model becoming a failure. In my opinion, the US will continue to be a major player. However the extent of dominance may stand reduced.

"Too much reliance on the Fed. Reserve manipulating interest rates to shape market conditions rather than Government monetary policy shaping economic conditions."

They're just testing right now whether the US is in a state of recession. Once they for sure where the economy is headed, the govt. might step in.
