Bulldogs 'won't pay overs' for Tonga
Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg says Willie Tonga is still a required player, but the NRL club will not get involved in a bidding war in negotiating a new contract.
The North Queensland Cowboys have expressed an interest in signing the former Test centre for next season.
Tonga has signalled his interest in shifting north, stating a desire to play alongside former team-mate Johnathan Thurston.
Mr Greenberg says he will consult with Bulldogs recruitment staff to decide what is a fair offer to put to Tonga.
"We want to keep him but we're not in the business of paying overs and putting ourselves under pressure for the wrong reasons," he said.
"So we'd love to keep him and we'll do the best we can to do that."
Mr Greenberg also called on the club's fans to turn out in force at the Olympic stadium on Friday night to make it an unhappy return for former Bulldogs Willie Mason and Mark O'Meley.
The pair left Belmore at the end of last year and joined two other former Bulldogs, Braith Anasta and Nate Myles, at the Roosters.
Greenberg says they can expect a hostile reception.
"The message to all Bulldogs fans is get out there, support our guys and give the other guys who've left us a hard time," he said. |
