It's Wapau Guy Williams Bronco Media Tuesday, April 21, 2009 He has waited for two years but WOW Brisbane Bronco Palmer Wapau will finally make his NRL debut on Friday night against the Parramatta Eels. Wapau, 26, has been named on the interchange bench after strong performances for Broncosâ feeder club, the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup. In Wapauâs second season at the Broncos, coach Ivan Henjak has been impressed with the progression in his game and is looking forward to seeing him in Broncos colours this weekend. âWeâre really excited about giving Palmer an opportunity,â said Henjak. Last year, Wapauâs NRL ambitions were hindered after he suffered a broken hand playing for the Dolphins. Returning late in the year, Wapau faced another setback with his preseason being hampered by a lower back injury. However, after plenty of hard work Wapau is back to full fitness and has been impressing the Broncosâ coaching staff on the training field. âHe had a couple of setbacks in the preseason but other than that weâre really excited about him,â said Henjak. âItâs great to be able to give him an opportunity and Iâm looking forward to him playing.â The former high school teammate of North Queensland Cowboysâ Matt Bowen has been playing five-eighth for the Dolphins but is comfortable playing in the front row and the back row. When quizzed on whether Wapau will get an opportunity to play five-eighth for the Broncos on Friday night, Henjak was coy. âHeâll come off the bench and hopefully he can fill a couple of positions,â said Henjak. âHe plays five-eighth at Redcliffe â whether heâll get an opportunity there or not, I donât know. âHeâs got some skills and heâs quite tough too so weâre looking forward to his performance.â Wapau replaces Dave Taylor in Henjakâs side after the young front rower played only a handful of minutes in the weekendâs win over the Pa ... |
