Wapau Awaits Hannant's Fate
Wed 19.3.2008 - Matt Marshall
Wapau Awaits Hannant's Fate
Source: The Courier Mail
PALMER Wapau is the humble greenkeeper set to lock horns with Roosters' bad boy Willie Mason.
Quietly spoken forward Wapau (pictured) will complete a stunning rags-to-riches tale if, as expected, he makes his NRL debut for the Broncos on Friday night.
While Wapau was not named yesterday for the Easter showdown with the Roosters, he has been placed on stand-by and will be rushed in should Ben Hannant not recover from a foot problem.
Hannant is racing the *** to be fit for Friday night's blockbuster after straining his achilles tendon against Penrith last Sunday but is considered a less than 50 per cent chance of playing.
Brisbane has already been forced to include two new forwards, David Taylor and Nick Kenny, following round one knee injuries to key men Joel Clinton and Corey Parker.
With Hannant likely to join them in the casualty ward, Wapau is set to suit up for his NRL debut against a Roosters' pack that includes established stars Mason, Mark O'Meley, Anthony Tupou, Craig Fitzgibbon and Nate Myles.
The 25-year-old groundsman, who spent the off-season training with the Broncos before being sent back to state league club Redcliffe, was sent an urgent SOS from club officials yesterday.
He knocked off work to join Wayne Bennett's squad midway through its morning training session and later took part in the official team briefing.
Wapau, who played junior football with Cowboys' superstar Matt Bowen, has been described by Bowen as the most talented footballer never to play the NRL.
That could all change come Good Friday.

Folau, whose family lives in Brisbane, has been in discussions with the club for some time, and alerted the Broncos of his decision today.
In accordance with the wishes of both Folau’s management and the Melbourne Storm, the Broncos agreed not to comment on the matter until the player had spoken to his current club and teammates.
Subsequently, while confirming the news, in the spirit of that agreement the Broncos will not make formal comment on the issue until tomorrow.

Broncos win battle to sign Folau
Australian Test centre Israel Folau said the chance to return home to his family in Brisbane was the key factor in his decision to leave Melbourne Storm to join the Broncos from next year.
Folau had been in discussions with the Broncos for some time and on Sunday the 18-year-old alerted both clubs and his teammates of the move.
"It was a very tough decision, the hardest of my life, to leave the Melbourne Storm and sign for the Broncos," Folau said in a statement.
"The club has been like a family to me in Melbourne and without their support I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I did.
"But the opportunity to return home and be closer to my family was too hard to resist. My family is the most important thing in my life and they are the reason I have made this choice."
Storm chief executive Brian Waldron was disappointed with the decision but said he understood why Folau, a devoted Mormon, decided to leave.
"Israel's family and church are very important to him and he can be closer to both at home in Brisbane," Waldron said.
"The impact Israel has made in Melbourne in his short time with the club has been phenomenal, and for that he will always be remembered with great affection.
"For a 17-18-year-old to break our season try-scoring record, win a premiership and become the youngest Australian Test player in history goes to show not only how talented he is, but what terrific structures we have in place here in Melbourne for anyone who plays for the club."
The Broncos also confirmed the signing on their website and chief executive Bruno Cullen will hold a press conference at the Red Hill training venue at 10am on Monday. |
