and poor old Tom's been relegated. Jharal Yow Yeh, great nephew of Kevin who was a Balmain stalwart who joined the Tigers along with 'Big Artie' Beetson in 66 is now the Broncos NYC's leading try scorer with 7 tries from 5 games. With any luck Jharal will be with the Tigers in years to come.

Broncos appoint Henjak as new coach
AAP - April 19, 2008, 12:33 pm

An elated Ivan Henjak has removed himself from the shadow of icon Wayne Bennett after being appointed to replace Brisbane's only coach in the club's 21-year history.

The former Canberra halfback will make his coaching debut at the age of 46 after the man heavily courted to replace Bennett, Craig Bellamy, accepted a multi-million dollar, five-year deal to remain with Melbourne.

"There's no shame in being second, third or even fourth choice to coach a club like the Broncos," said Henjak, his appointment confirmed at an early Saturday morning press conference in the club's board room.

"The is the number one coaching job in the NRL. I'm truly honoured and grateful to have been offered my chance by such a great club."

Henjak will take over the reins next season at Brisbane when Bennett heads to St George Illawarra.

"I haven't coached in the NRL but I can assure you I'll do all I can to uphold the legacies that Wayne and the past greats who've come through the club have left," Henjak said.

But Henjak, who has been Bennett's assistant since 2006, has no intention of trying to fill Bennett's coaching boots.

"I've been fortunate to have worked with a number of wonderful coaches and hopefully I've learned a little from each of them," said Henjak.

"I'm not Wayne Bennett and I'll never be Wayne Bennett, he's a coaching icon.

"I have a different personality to Wayne and I'm not going to try and be like Wayne."

Henjak was originally pencilled in to make his debut as an interim coach until Bellamy served out the final two years of his Storm contract.

But in the wake of Bellamy's decision he has effectively been given two years to show he's worth an extended contract and has what it takes to be the club's second long-term coach.

Bennett told the players of Henjak's appointment just before Friday night's 26-24 loss to the Gold Coast.

Henjak Saturday admitted he thought his c ...

Butterfield The Try Freak

Wed 09.4.2008 - Trad McLean
Butterfield The Try Freak

WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s coach Anthony Griffin is starting to believe his hooker Tom Butterfield (pictured) just might be a try sneak.
Butterfield opened his career with the Broncos by scoring a try in round one, but would soon prove that was no lucky feat.
He has since gone on to score a try each week to have four after four rounds and be the Broncos' National Youth Competition leading tryscorer.
"He is our highest tryscorer and has found the line four times now, so that means it is starting to not be just a fluke," said Griffin.
The Bronco coach has watched Butterfield for the past couple of years in his former role as head mentor at Redcliffe.
A tour with the Papua New Guinea side to France last year - Butterfield was born in Alotan, PNG - and a strong off-season in which he has built on his frame has vastly improved the young rake's play.
"Tom came through Redcliffe and he has developed his game over the past couple of years," said Griffin.
"He's a really tough competitior, he is strong, and he's worked hard to get his body in shape in the off-season."
Butterfield will try to keep the try-scoring streak alive when the young Broncos play Newcastle at Energy Australia Stadium on Sunday.
He will start in the scrunm alongside Josh McGuire, who was named at prop after impressing in his return from suspension in last week's comeback win over Melbourne.
Big centre Will Tupou also returns, moving captain Alex Glenn to lock.
However Griffin said Glenn had the experience to fill the no.13 jersey.
"He has played Queensland Cup for Burleigh at lock so he will handle it," he said.

A POSSIBLE STAR IN THE MAKING HERE, ON THE BACK OF SOME NEWS THAT "PNG MAY HAVE A TEAM IN THE NRL IN 2010?"(speculative); for those clowns this is an assumption!
WOOHOO can't wait to see him graduate into the NRL via the Broncos!

Bellamy is the man for Broncos: Carroll
AAP

Brisbane should be doing everything in their power to sign Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy as Wayne Bennett's replacement at the NRL club, says Broncos enforcer Tonie Carroll.

Bennett has signed a three-year deal with St George Illawarra and will take over from embattled coach Nathan Brown next year.

The Broncos travel to Melbourne on Friday night in a grudge match against Bellamy's Storm premiership-winning outfit coming off back-to-back losses.

"He's a fantastic coach," lock Carroll said about Bellamy.

"He gets the best out his players.

"If I owned a club I'd be trying to get him as head coach.

"When he was here (as Broncos assistant coach from 1998-2002), he was one of the better coaches."

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said Bellamy, a two-time Dally M Coach of the Year, was one of four candidates yet to be interviewed for Bennett's position.

"A lot of people are focusing on this weekend because we're down there but we think that's probably inappropriate, he's got a job to do and so have we," Cullen told Sydney radio station 2KY.

"We haven't started negotiations or anything with Craig at all and that's the 100 per cent truth."

The biggest stumbling block to recruiting Bellamy is that he's contracted to the Storm until the end of the 2009 season.

If Melbourne refuse to grant Bellamy an early release then the Broncos will probably appoint an interim coach for 2009.

Former Queensland Origin forward Carroll was unfazed by the media fuss surrounding Bennett's appointment as Dragons coach, mainly because he'll be selling real estate on the Gold Coast next year instead of playing in the NRL.

"I'll be watching every game from the sideline next year so I really don't care," said the 32-year-old, who played a total of 12 Tests for Australia and New Zealand.

After 188 matches for the Broncos, and counting, Carroll is savouring every game he plays but he doesn't fear retirement.

Bennett to coach Dragons from 2009
13:37 AEST Tue Apr 1 2008
Go mobile

St George Illawarra have confirmed the appointment of Wayne Bennett as coach of the NRL club for next year.

The six-time premiership-winning coach, who earlier this year announced he would be leaving the Broncos after 21 years at the helm, has signed a three-year deal with the Dragons.

He will replace embattled coach Nathan Brown.

"It is a great honour for me to be appointed as the head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons, they are one of the great clubs and brands of the NRL with a rich history and tradition," Bennett said on the Dragons website.

"Yesterday I met with the board of the Dragons, we had a very meaningful discussion about a number of issues in relation to the club and the direction for 2009 and beyond.

"I advised the Broncos this morning of my decision, I won't be making any appointments at the Dragons until later in the year and I won't be making any further comment until the completion of the 2008 season for both the Broncos and the Dragons."

Wayne Bennett confirmed as St George Illawarra coach
Body: EXCLUSIVE: SUPERCOACH Wayne Bennett has signed a three-year contract to coach St George Illawarra in the NRL from next season.

The six-time premiership winning coach, considered the best-ever, reached an agreement with the club yesterday and the contract was rubber-stamped by the board late last night.

The club is expected to call a press conference later today to make the appointment official.

St George Illawarra will become Bennett's third NRL club following on from a short stint with the Canberra Raiders before two decades at the Brisbane Broncos.

He will replace Nathan Brown, who could still be retained at the club in some capacity on the coaching staff.

The Bennett deal was sealed yesterday when he travelled to Sydney to finalise negotiations with CEO *** Doust.

Bennett's Present To Broncos

Tue 01.4.2008 - Matt Marshall
Bennett's Present To Broncos

LAST Christmas, Wayne Bennett hand-delivered the Broncos a generous farewell present – the game's brightest young star.

Bennett, set to depart Red Hill at season's end, met with Israel Folau after learning of the Storm teenager's homesickness via an article in The Courier-Mail in grand final week last year.

Bennett spoke to Folau about the advantages of living close to his loved ones and assured him there would be a spot for him at the Broncos if he wanted to come home.

"That's why Wayne spoke to him," Brisbane CEO Bruno Cullen said.

"When we heard he was interested in coming home, Wayne met with him and his manager before Christmas. That's when the ball started rolling.

"We didn't negotiate with him at that time, we just talked about what he wanted to do and we got a firm indication then he was seriously thinking about coming home."

Since that meeting, Brisbane has kept constant tabs on Folau through football manager *** Nolan, but the club insists it never aggressively headhunted the Storm teenager.

In fact, Folau's signature caught Broncos insiders by surprise.

"It's a nice little present," Cullen said. "I was very pleased and a little bit surprised. I thought when everything went quiet two weeks ago, he probably decided to stay in Melbourne.

"We were never aggressive. We never went hunting him, he was never a target, we found out he was keen on coming home and Wayne started talking to him.

"It all started there and this is how it's finished. The major reason we've been able to secure his services is the fact he wanted to come home.

"It hasn't been a money issue, it's been an issue about family, about his coming home and being with people he's close to."

Brisbane is set to be further boosted with Darren Lockyer, Karmichael Hunt and Joel Clinton all fit to play against the Storm on Friday. They were all restricted to light duties y ...

Broncos Hose Down Money Talk

Mon 31.3.2008 - Phil Lutton
Broncos Hose Down Money Talk

WOW Brisbane Broncos CEO Bruno Cullen says the prized signing of boom centre Israel Folau will not open the floodgates for further raids on star Melbourne Storm players.

Cullen this morning also denied reports that Folau's contract was worth $1.6 million over four years, saying it was "considerably less" and structured as a two-year deal with a two-year option in Folau's favour.

The deal allows the 18-year-old to renegotiate his contract after his first two years in Brisbane in the likely situation that his value further skyrockets.

Cullen told reporters at the Broncos' Red Hill base that Folau almost "landed in our lap" and admitted he was yet to meet the star centre, who won a premiership with the Storm last season.

The two will cross paths for the first time when Brisbane plays Melbourne this weekend.

According to Cullen, Folau's motivation was simply to return home to be with his family and church, rather than the sums of money on offer.

Folau's signing fuelled speculation that Storm coach Craig Bellamy would be the next to follow. Bellamy is widely tipped to replace departing coach Wayne Bennett, even though he has another year on his contract with the Storm.

Storm captain Cameron Smith and five-eighth Greg Inglis - both Queenslanders - have also been mentioned as possible Broncos targets.

However, Cullen denied further raids in the wake of Folau's move north.

Bennett: I'm Not Going Anywhere

BRONCOS coach Wayne Bennett denies he has been approached by the North Queensland Cowboys.

And current Cowboys coach Graham Murray has stressed he wants to continue coaching North Queensland in the long-term.

Official and coaches of both clubs said speculation which surfaced over the weekend that Bennett (pictured) would replace Murray at North Queensland at the end of 2008 was off the mark.

Bennett, who is under contract with Brisbane until the end of 2009, said: 'It's all news to me. There's no doubt in my mind I will be coaching the Broncos in 2008 and 2009.

'There's no question mark that about.'

Speaking from his farm, west of Brisbane, Bennett said he had not seen the Sunday papers but wasn't surprised by the reports.

'A friend mentioned the Cowboys rumour the other day. Although I told him I knew nothing about it, I knew it would find itself way into the papers pretty soon,' he said.

'I don't know where it came from or what it's all about.'

There is a feeling in Brisbane that Bennett may even seek to extend his career at the Broncos beyond 2009.

'You can't go into the player market in 2008 if the players don't know who will be coach (beyond 2009),' Bennett said.

Murray said Cowboys CEO *** Parr and chairman Laurence Lancini had assured him no dealings had taken place with Bennett.

The only man to coach North Queensland to the finals and a grand final, Murray said: 'I've always had a terrific working relationship with *** Parr and Laurence Lancini – they have told me that they haven't spoken to Wayne.

'They are men of their word. The issue is out of my control – all I can do is coach.

'I'm off contract at the end of next season but would love to stay on here at North Queensland. The club has really became a success story in recent years.

'It's taken a lot of time and hard work but we are now among the elite teams of the NRL. I think the futur ...

Young Broncos Reign

Fri 28.3.2008 - Jamie Gallagher
Young Broncos Reign

THE Baby Broncos looked impressive with a 32-10 victory over the Cowboys at Suncorp tonight.
After a fairly even first half, the Broncos NYC team turned up the heat in the second scoring four tries to the Cowboys one.
The Broncos opened the scoring in the second half after a testing kick was sent to the right wing and claimed at height by Jharal Yow Yeh (pictured).
Halfback Ben Hunt missed the conversion and the scores remained 16-6 after 50 minutes.
The Broncos had the best of the next 10 minutes and the pressure paid off as lock forward Michael Spence hit a gap 15 metres out before stepping the fullback and running in behind the posts.
A routine kick for Hunt increased the lead to 16 and the Cowboys’ heads started to drop.
A 40-metre burst up the middle from Hunt lead to the Broncos next try as he jumped straight back from a shoulder charge and kept the ball alive.
Two quick passes got the ball wide to Yow Yeh who showed off his finishing skills to beat the defence to the corner and score his second.
The conversion was missed and with 12 minutes to go the Broncos were up by 20.
But the points weren’t over yet as hooker Tom Butterfield capitalised on good work from his forwards to cross under the black dot.
Hunt converted to make the scores 32-6.
