Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
maroons, I visit brisbane maybe once a year, and see plenty of kids wearing Lions gear each and every time, so not sure where you're hanging out to have only seen one. Could it be that you live under the grandstand at Suncorp?
You would do well to listen to Nath, he's got his fingers on the pulse up there in the sunshine state and doesn't argue often from an emotional viewpoint.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
I live in Brisbane, and I have seen a kid wearing a Lions jumper once. Every day I see someone wearing a Queensland Maroons, Broncos or Cowboys jumper.

I don't know why you keep referring to SA, it makes no difference to anything.
The NRL is suffering, but it will overcome it and come good again. Lions gear is popular among children... Thats complete bs, you have no idea. Most of the kids think AFL is a soft sport and that the Lions are useless.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
spot on john. it isn't that nrl is not well liked. on the contrary. that isn't my point. the game is suffering with paying public. and it is suffering in merchandise sales. you rarely see a broncos jumper in brisbane these days. lions gear is popular, but the qld roar apparel is worn by every second kid at the shopping centres. kids really are following roary the lion, and the roar players. it is becoming very popular.

sydney really is it's own worst enemy. the size of the city, and the lack of transport, compounded with extreme traffic conditions render most peoples time useless. so you are dead right about the travel issue. and the cost of taking a family for the working class western suburbs dwellers is just too much. a real shame. could be the downfall of the game that was the heart and soul of the east coast north of mexico.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
underestimating the future power of soccer in this country is absolutely foolish. I remember a similar arguement about afl about 20 years ago in Brisbane and Sydney, and now look what is happening? And if Australia does end up earning the right to host a world cup, it will only get stronger.
Western Sydney is the NRL capital of Australia, possibly the world (ok, that may be an exageration). Think about this, if the area known as Western Sydney annexed itself from the rest of Sydney, it would be the countries 3rd largest city, it currently houses 4 league teams (Parramatta, Penrith, Wests, Canterbury) so popularity is not the issue, it's affordability of going to games when they can watch them for free on tv, as well as distance to travel to watch them. To get from say Penrith over to sfs to watch a game would take as long as driving from Mt Gravatt to Maroochydore, not to mention the cost of tolls, then trying to find a park. how many broncos fans would do that on a regular basis? Not many I would suggest, certainly not 30000, and rightly so. Homebush isn't much better and public transport to the area is substandard to say the least.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
all of your arguments are incorrect and pointless sunshine. where you getting your info from??

what game anywhere in qld pulls 55,000? suncorp holds 52,000 sold out. only the origins, wallabies and socceroos fill it to capacity. broncos are lucky to get 30,000 and only 5 years ago they averaged 12,000 per game while the lions averaged 31,000. get your facts right mate.

47,000 fans regularly turn up to crows games mate. they have 56,000 paid up members. they aren't broncos "i got my membership buying maccas 3 weeks in a row" members.

you have a lot to learn about soccer my friend. approximately half this country is officially from foreign decent from first or second generation. that means football(soccer) is inherant in their makeup.

we have live footy sat arvo. live footy sunday arvo, and live footy saturday night no matter who plays guaranteed. we have delayed telecast friday night. 3 live games per week. one delayed. nrl show 1 live game and 2 delayed. poor cousin. you must feel so ashamed.

don't come back on here agian without solid facts, you dead $hit. i f u ckin hate people with opinions based on bull$hit. put up or shut up. you mouth off to all and sundry on here yet your viewpoints are baseless. how old are you??

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
People don't care much for NRL in Queensland, yeah right lol. 55,000 fans don't turn up to Crows or Port games. The AFL may be bigger in Victoria, SA and WA, but thats certainly not the case in QLD. Other than the Lions match, the other games are shown too late at night for the kids to be able to watch it.

Soccer will never be the dominate sport in Australia, the only people who play it here are kids and most when they're 12 or so they just switch to AFL or NRL. Local AFL games in QLD don't pull half as many to the matches. Comparing it so SA is pointless.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
i couldn't care less if it wasn't the number one sport or not. afl doesn't need qld to boom. they are already 4 times bigger in popularity, financial power, sponsorship, tv revenue etc than nrl. people in qld don't care much for league either mate. where you get the idea they do is beyond me. local crowds are almost non existant. the local grand final drew about 3,000 people in brisbane. adelaide just hosted the sanfl grand final and 34,000 turned up.
i hope nrl doesn't die a slow death, but certain things are inevitable as this country changes it's demographic. one is the soccer will possibly become the biggest sprt in the land to fall into line with rest of the world.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
Whatever mate, you think it will be the number one sport in Queensland if you want it to be that bad. The European clubs and New Zealand will all be very competitive. The others are still developing, look at Japan in Union.

Rugby League was a great, popular and financialy secure sport before David Gallop became the CEO. It needs a new one that will make some changes, relocate some of the Sydney teams because they obviously can't support them and really make the tv channels pay more and advertise it more.

Theres no reason for NRL to die in QLD, it is loved and has the richest clubs in the league. With the population booming, and the NRL being the dominate sport in the state, the crowds and members will only grow.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
afl will be the number one in qld in 20 years. take it anyway you like mate, nrl is a dying sport. Australia is paying $1-13 at the TAB to win the 'world cup' made up from other countries who a pathetic at league, and have half the players allowed in as ex-pat aussies to make them actually slightly competitive. what a joke. maybe the socceroos can ask brazil to give us some of their players so we can win the world cup. what do you think??

have you been to england?? i doubt it. you think rugby league is big there?? hahahahah. yeah right. it nearly died about 10 years ago. most never heard of it. a 100 square km radius of england is the only area they like it. 2 of their best clubs hull and wigan, are now overshadowed by their soccer clubs.

crowds in sydney are pathetic, and it is the home of rugby league in 'their' words. one team that draws 30,000(only recently!!) in brisbane doesn't constitute a healthy competition.

keep my moronic thoughts to myself?? nah, it's way to much fun watching retards like you try to justify their pathetic opinions. whats a broncos sticker cost these days anyway??

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
Well AFL isn't the number 1 sport in Queensland I'm pretty sure its NRL. A dying sport lmao, it currently has a weak CEO who doesn't advertise the game properely, just keeps channel 9 and Fox sport happy.

Why do you even bother saying no one else plays it when you look at the AFL. It is actually played by other countries, more popular in England. Theres also the rugby league world cup this year, played by a number of teams which Australia takes part in.

All of those games were played in NSW, just shows that new South Welshmen arn't devoted to sport. The Broncos have about a 30,000 average attendance. For the big games nearly 55,000. Not as much as AFL in Victoria, but still alot better than the Swans and Lions. God knows how much money will be wasted on the new GC and WS teams.

Obviously its you who can't read very well, because I never said I had a Broncos sticker, still, like I said, I'd much rather that than Bernie Gabba Vegas.

Keep drifting off in your moronic thoughts, and try to keep them to yourself.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
nice try.

if afl is not the number one sport in 20 years in Qld, then it means that like daylight saving, and wages that still don't match the rest of australia - QUEENSLAND JUST DOESN'T GET IT!!

who cares if qld has the best rugby league talent in the world?? it is a dying sport and no one else plays it. and before you come back with - hey, afl is not played by anyone etc, etc - it is australian rules football, and no one cares if no one else plays it. i hope no one ever plays it outside this country. it is our game, lets keep it that way.

when nrl supporters were taking the pi$$ out of afl when the swans had 19,000 at their final against the roos, on the same night they had 3 nrl games - YES 3 GAMES IF YOU CAN'T READ PROPERLY!! - with a total of 18,000 spectators for all 3. and probably half of them were given away from maccas like most broncos tickets for the last 10 years. hahahahaha

i knew you had a broncs sticker. pretty easy to tell. i suppose your fave pub is the paddo, and your fave piece of clothing is the drizabone in your closet too.

get many bargains at cashies?? oh no, there i go drifting again.......

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
Call it boring and full of "boagns" all you like, AFL will never be the sport of Queensland, NRL will always dominate. Brisbane is probably the capital of Rugby League now days in Australia, theres a reason for that. Queensland has the best rugby league talent in the world, and theres what? Two or three Queenslanders in the Lions team.

I reckon I'd rather have a Broncos sticker on my car than one of Bernie Gabba Vegas lmao. Drifting off talking about shopping centres and cash converters there shows you don't have much of a brain or an arguement.

I still support the Lions, but I'd never be a member.

you're a tool maroons. support the broncs all you like mate. boring as bat$hit sport played by thick neck boagns, supported by people cut from the same cloth. i suspect you are on this list.

bet you have a broncos sticker on your car, or better still a personalised number plate. get back to the local shopping centre mate. cash converters is having a sale.

I'm not changing my loyalty, my "loyalty" has always been more so with the Broncos. Success in the short term? The Broncos have made the finals for the last 16 consecutive finals series and won 6 from 6 grand finals. I still support the Lions, but I'd never be a member.

GT is right Prog.. I mean the Lions are really young, with only Carlton and Hawthorn having younger lists.

You should be barracking for a team that's a lot more seasoned like Sydney. All that extra experience should at least guarantee you immediate, short term success.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
To cut a very long story quite short , you stuffed up with your choice of teams.

The Lions are cr@p, they have little to look forward too and will likely fall further before they improve, a coach with no coaching experience should help that.

Only one thing left to report mertes, there is no dough left in the kitty, Brown has made sure of that.

Re:Pathetic Lions Reply to this message
So seriously though, what happened this year? Certainly a lot of promise, and while we're not quite there yet, there were glimpses of apparent brilliance (vs. Doggies) and utter disappointment (vs. Eagles, vs. Demons). Is it mere inconsistency that cost us the season? What's the outlook for next year?
