| just spent 3 weeks in the us watching college and NBA basketball. HO HUM how boring. the game is soooooo slow and based purely on individual talent . No concept of team play or defencive principals. Coaches are still living in the past with antiquated plays and coaching concepts. They have there own set off rules far removed from what the rest of the world use (woops forgot there is no rest of the world as far as the US can see.)Get with the program guys come and see what the Australian Institute of Sport has to offer. |

HAVE to laugh at some of the assertions flowing here..
@OGx2 - "No donlandrigan, I would know my own basketball league" - didn't realize we had Mr Stern in here. Nice to have you here David.
Seriously tho' - what a moronic thing to say! Overwhelming arrogance there OGx2: just because the nba occurs in the States doesn't mean that you know it any better than folks of other nations. Verily, the fact that you name Chauncey Billups & Gilbert Arenas as 2 of the best 4 players proves to me 2 things: a) you don't know *your* game very well... and b) you do not understand what they're trying to achieve with the US team (actually HAVING role players within it).
@nursecjn Efirst of all... crucify a guy because he misses an apostrophe?
Now...
ROFL... Shaquille O'Neal hasn't been worthy of a spot in the US team for about 4 years now. Nor has he been capable of playing in the off-season for several years either. Duncan... verging on similar conditions now. Red... yes: agreed. They need a sharpshooter (but his defense is so-so). But it is important to note the focus that USA Basketball is taking with this team: and that's to have set roles within the group so you don't get the debacle that was the last few *dream teams* (nightmares?). Simply put: there isn't enough ball to go around with all the guys you named. Kobe/James/Wade/Stoudamir e/Howard as your starting 5? Maybe for a game... but I think you need a few RPers in that team!
Easily win the Gold? Win... maybe Eeasy? Never!
aside: Is interesting to note that neither USA programs currently have the most recent trophy in the cabinet. Yes, gogo Opals! |

Firstly, nursecjn you might wish to consider using a spell check next time before you complain about others use of language - "grammatically" speaking.
Secondly, the facts are that the USA did not win the World Championship in either the men's or women's championships and that is what the record books will always show. It will not say who was injured or who was absent only who won and who lost. And for now, the best country teams are not the USA teams even though they may have the majority of the most talented players in the world. When you win something meaningful get back to us..........go you Opals! |

First off what kind of word is "Arent?" Is that some kind of wierd Australian slang? When you can write a gramitically correct sentence then you can talk about USA Basketball! Second off you will see in Beijing that the USA will prove itself as the world power in hoops. Kobe, Garnett, Duncan, Shaq, Arenas, Redd, and Stoudamire all did not play in the World Championships. If you were to put any combination of the above three on the team the US will easily win the gold medal. The US has the best coach it can with Coack K to turn the team around and win another gold medal. Look for The King at the point with Kobe and D-Wade on the wing with Howard and Stoudamire at the power spots. Good luck keeping up with those five...then you have Melo, Battier, Chris Paul, Arenas, KG?, Duncan?, and Redd? coming off the bench. The "Yanks" will easily win gold in China in 08!!!
Good Luck

No donlandrigan, I would know my own basketball league
We were missing 3 of our best 4 players. Chauncy Billups, Gilbert Arenas, and Kobe Bryant were injured before the start of the tournament. If you are not familiar with these players, I can't help that.
Any team that has 3 of its 4 best players missing is going to come up short. |

@Johnsmith - "3 of your best 4"??? I call BS. They were missing Kobe. Only he ranks as missing from the best 4.
@ronsta - ROFL... sorry man, as much as I would love it to be so, the Aussies aren't in the same game as Europe or the US. At least not consistently enough for it to matter.
@pingwingling: "As long as jungle ball reigns supreme in the hearts of American Basketball fans"
...
I am not sure if you meant that to sound the way it came out, but what a truly abhorrent thing to say.
And I'd say your base assertion is incorrect too. Yes, the reason that the US cannot currently beat European teams is cohesion. No, it's not because of the 'Street Ball' stylings of many inner-suburbian courts. Length of time together, the ability to gel as a unit. And look for this to change for Peking (where they will have had a few years as a unit). Not winning for several years, being looked at as you look at them (& knowing that) - you figure that this isn't going to be motivation? |

| Look for the United States to field a credible but beatable side in the 2008 Peking Olympics. Look also for the United States to struggle to beat more motivated and cohesive European teams that will go to Peking with a better team chemistry. The Basketball of the United States is now directly influenced by the courts of inner-city America where teamwork and cohesion are pushed aside so showmanship and individual accomplishment can be spotlighted. As long as jungle ball reigns supreme in the hearts of American Basketball fans, the United States will fail to win international competitions. Those competitions are filled with teams drilled in the fundamentals of teamwork and overpaid, ego-centered American professionals no longer have the ability to grasp that concept. |

But, when it comes to the men's national teams ... If you take 3 of your best 4 players away, you simply aren't going to win the big games.
If the USA hadn't had their best 3 injured and unable to play, they easily would have won the gold. |

Some truly bizarre commentary in here, lots of assumptions & hearsay too. From some of the posts Id hazard a guess that the folks that wrote em havent watched the NBA for several seasons. I agree that they were not the best at the WCs in Japan, but that was not their goal..
Sorry running_back there won't be another camp to select a 'new teamfor the Beijing Olympics. This team was put together with that end in sight. Not to compete for the WC, but to aim for Olympic Gold. And they did better than a lot of folks expected.
ONeal? If you're speaking about Jermaine, then perhaps. But if you're speaking about Shaquille... well, let's just say that the Big Aristotle has a more-than-hard time committing to playing a full season these days, let alone the extra workload of being in the national team.
AI? Again, I'm confused, given that Allen Iverson may not be even the bestAIin his team by the time the Olympics come about. Iverson wasn't even invited to try out for this team.
Billups pulled out because of family commitments, Arenas because of an injury tho speculation is that he knew he was to be cut (imo a mistake not to choose him). Yes, Kobe will be there, and management have said from the get-go that they are building the team around him.
And finally they have worked out that it is not in their best interest to try & beat the Europeans at Euro-style basketball. Running basically two squads was a good idea, they have more athleticism, and a deeper bench they can go harder for a whole game. The mistake was made in switching to a primary/secondary squad, when they should just change individuals as they need to someone looks tired, substitute. Both Anthony & James need to put greater emphasis on defense. At times they looked horrible.
They have the basis of a very good team there the change in emphasis on 'Star players& making sure that there are sufficient role players makes this team into one that will threaten for gold |

Keep in mind the fact that Chauncy Billups, Gilbert Arenas, and Kobe Bryant had to leave Team USA due to injury, right before the start of the World Championship Tournament.
If Team USA had those 3 guys when they played Greece, there is no way that Team USA would have lost to Greece. And then Team USA would have gone on to beat Spain in the Final.
Team USA will be ready to win the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in China.
Also, in the Women's World Championships, it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the Australian team had played the American team in the championship game. But unfortunately, Team USA was beaten for the first time in 12 years, in the semi-finals against Russia. .. However, they did bounce back to smash the home team Brazil by 40 points. |

Being a basketballer since I was 7 (female) and playing district basketball in Adelaide, I am rapt that we have done so well in these World Championships. Yet we get no publicity or recognition like the netballers do (such a GIRLS game). Our World Cahmpionships at least are REAL WORLD championships unlike netball which is only against countries in the Commonwealth. Go you Opals and c'mon girls basketball is the real game unlike p***** netball!!!
Jan Sterling what an Adelaide legend, you go girl!!!! |
