| first of all, why would you start a competion around the grand finals of AFL & Rubly league. What better way of people not noticing a competition that is played in the wrong time of year (just like A league soccer)... |

Taipans for example, too many imports all that cash for AMERICANS when we should be spending the money on local talent.
Taipans were always going to struggle considering the way the Qld govt was screwing them with the lease agreement at the Cairns convention centre. Under the agreement, all profits from food and alcohol went to the centre, and the Taipans only got profits from sale of merchandise and tickets. The club was losing money every week, even before the global financial crisis
The Taipans had a very good junior academy, in which their rookies were sent to the US college system to develop their games before they turned professional.

Yes it will be interesting to see what the restructure brings to the table. Pro basketball(NBL) will be running out of chances OR is this the last chance they have to get it right?
I hope they get it right, to have Australia ranked 2 in the world overall is absolutely amazing and so sad administrators cant get the game moving the way it should look at soccer they would die for that ranking what are we? 35-40 ranked
in soccer? |

| The best thing for the league is to support local talent but at the same time they shouldnt shun Americans who want to play in the league. Thats the difference between professional sport and amateur sport. You cant run a league and knock back talented players who are entertaining and bring in the fans and corporate dollar just because of their country of origin. You cant have your cake and eat it to. The EPL is one of the biggest money spinners in the world and the teams are filled with people who are not of English origin. Not saying we should run teams full of non aussies but the foreign player quota should be increased. I like the idea of an Asian league however in the worlds current economic climate its not feasable. |

| I have enjoyed reading everyones comments. I know a few NBL players who are currently playing and they are obviously nervous about there future and the state of the game presently. Let me share a little about what I have learnt through there comments. BA taking the reins of all basketball is good and positive. Next season will have 8 teams in the league. Each team will have to show proof of 1 million dollars available before the season starts. There is talk of linking to a new Asian league 2010. Singapore Slingers are playing all over Asia trying to gather support for this concept. Makes sense to me as in many countries in Asia Basketball is HUGE!! Its the national game in China and Phillipines. TV audiences in millions tuning in to watch. Someone made the comment about Oz being to small a market with AFL, Rugby and League etc...too hard to compete in a country of 22 million? I think so, expanding to Asia makes sense to me. A good business model is Super 14 rugby or Euro league in basketball. The standard/quality of basketball in australia is very high and we have a lot to offer the game worldwide. I look foward to seeing what BA does with the Pro league and the new contract with Fox sports points to positive things for the game. There will be some pain before gain and we all need to understand that. Most importantly we all need to go along and support the game. I went to Dragons vs Tigers and was part of 9300 people there and the atmosphere was electric. It can work but we all have to get behind and support rather than complain all the time. What do you reckon? Are you with me? |

| Man, I hope the powers to be do something or Basketball in this country is up shyte creek. Come on what the fu@k is going on, I tell you what the problem is, Taipans for example, too many imports all that cash for AMERICANS when we should be spending the money on local talent.Don't get me wrong Imports are good for Basketball in this country 1 or 2 imports per team but you look at NBL team rosters now and you'll find 3 or 4, all that cash. Ok! so they may not get top dollar say you pay the guy $150,000 a year, just an example, that's one American import, times that by 3 your looking at $600,000 dollars before you even start a roster and in this country that sort of money is big bucks. We will never match the NBA when it comes to money so we need to develop a system where our loacl talent can shine and even if the NBL team rosters have only one import and more Aussies maybe then we will see a stronger League. I'm not saying pay the local guys less money, but if the guys are talented enough pay them there dues. I would rather see a league with 20 teams and local talent on display than a league with 8 teams filled with imports and struggling to pay players..... |

** Taken from: http://www.preneurmarketing.com/uncategorised/savi ng-basketball-australia-and-the-nbl/
Firstly, let me say 'well done' on the vote yesterday to merge the NBL & Basketball Australia - It was always going to be a battle to try and progress the sport, when the face of the sport (NBL) can't keep teams in it's league.
As FoxSports.com.au reported "Australian basketball officials have celebrated a momentous day in the chequered history of the sport in this country, with an unanimous agreement to bring the national and domestic organizing bodies under the one umbrella."
The best part of what has been reported thus far is "With this agreement, the new administration is set to press ahead with its negotiations with Fox whose proposal is believed to include live coverage of every game in a revamped NBL from the 2009-10 season onward, plus regular internationals featuring the Boomers and Opals"...I must congratulate whoever negotiated this 'potential deal' given "the 2007/08 final Championship game attracted only 68,000 viewers on Fox Sports - about 10% of basketball participants in this country."
The one thing that I hope the BA board, club owners and everyone else involved in the league realise is that "It's not about putting a winning team on the floor"...
Yes you read that right.

| The love of the game in this country is healthy. The national league and corporate and fan support for its teams are not. I must say i thought the Hawks would be the next team in trouble and iam surprised that the Taipains are staring down the barrel. |

As I said, if you are correct with your comments, the NBL (and basketball in this country) will not survive the next couple of years.
Perth - in trouble, Sydney - in bigger trouble, Cairns - fked.
This is a sport that was hugely popular as recently as 15 years ago. Perth in the early 90's was almost as fanatical about the Wildcats as they were about the West Coast Eagles.
The last decade has seen the sport go from bad to worse and crowds are pathetic.
While I don't think losing the sport is a bad thing, plenty out there will disagree and for those people I wish the game well. But, as I have suggested, it can only be through mass changes and streamlining of teams that this can happen.
OR, maybe the nation should support maybe 3 sides in a foreign league (if there is one out there willing). Worth a look at. |

"Well, smart ar5e, who's making the poor calls now! Though if you are correct, and the Taipans are one of the 2 most supported and best run clubs in the NBL, the game is as good as DEAD!"
I stand by my comments. Cairns is one of the best supported clubs in the league and the fact that they are in this position has little to do with that.
And they have been well ran. They are not the first sporting club in the world who are coping badly with the financial crisis and the fact that they are going into administration is more a sign of the world global financial crisis and the state of the NBL then the Cairns Taipains basketball club smarta$$. Honda, despite there size, has pulled out of F1 racing and the F1 is really starting to hurt. Any huge sports fan will tell you that clubs everywhere are hurting. Alot of sporting franchises in the US are slashing their payrolls as are several EPL clubs. |

Given next year they are totally revamping the league with no team guaranteed a spot, it isn't surprising the Taipans' owner decided to not throw more money at it. There's talk of a $1Million bond in order to play next year. No way Taipans' would put or fund that sort of commitment on a commercial basis.

League officials say the first they knew of the Taipans' plight was late on Monday, when majority owner John O'Brien broke the news to interim NBL chief executive Scott Derwin.
John O'Brien, the major corporate sponsor of the Taipans, is a car dealer in Cairns. Given the current plight of car sales and the cash flow problems of car dealers, it is hardly surprising that he has pulled the pin on his hobby spending. Given that Cairns is a tourist town , highly dependent on international tourists, not surprising that there in no one locally stepping up to fill the void either. |

the NBL deserves everything that is coming to them...
with its previous Yank administration jumping into bed with business which included taking the game away from its grass roots followers by doing an exclusive deal with FOXTEL... then of course it was going to be held hostage by the world economy...
like someone mentioned on this forum... the sport has to get away from it's all for profit and all clubs to be treated like small business franchise mentality..
BTW the Perth Wildcats were extremely lucky to survive given their marriage to the corrupt 'Firepower' venture.. |

Well, smart ar5e, who's making the poor calls now! Though if you are correct, and the Taipans are one of the 2 most supported and best run clubs in the NBL, the game is as good as DEAD!
Here's the latest:
NBL's Taipans enter administration
AAP - December 9, 2008, 7:59 pm
Another financial crisis has rocked the NBL, with the Cairns Taipans stunning league officials by going into voluntary administration.
League officials say the first they knew of the Taipans' plight was late on Monday, when majority owner John O'Brien broke the news to interim NBL chief executive Scott Derwin.
It came only six days after the Sydney Spirit announced they would be able to finish the season, following frantic efforts to save the club.
Derwin flew to Cairns on Tuesday afternoon to meet with the Taipans' administrators from KPMG.
As yet, the NBL do not know whether the Taipans will be able to play their Saturday night away match against the Gold Coast Blaze.
The league are understood to have told the administrators they need an answer on Saturday night's game by Thursday. |

I don't think basketball will be as easy to save as the soccer was.
Let's face it, can a country of 21 million possibly support major AFL, League, Union, Soccer, Cricket AND Basketball comps? The finances aren't infinite! |

The sponsorship money is there for Townsville and Cairns.
Problem is the distribution of talent is uneven with clubs like Sydney and Melbourne having much better rosters , the schedule of matches means too many games to follow for a small supporter base and a decrease in the quality of play due to player fatigue, a final 8 out of 11 or whatever number of teams is a joke, and some of the franchises struggle financially ( and on court) for years without intervention , meaning these club's supporters just get peeved off and move on to another sport. |
