| I have already stated a fair reason why I support the team that I do. |

Ichiro is my favourite Ja/panese player. But have been and always be an Oakland fan!!
Can LA steal game six? Well I wouldn't write them off but am looking forward to seeing the Celtics hold up the trophy! With all due respect, it isn't that I don't like the Lakers it is that I dislike Kobe. (not as a player though, as a person)IMO the guy is a bona fide W A N K E R. |

Sheesh... shots across the bow!
Fair enough... and that's as good a reason as any to follow a team.
Some folk think that's why (in baseball) I follow the Mariners (Ichiro), but I was a fan long before that (friend of mine I met when I first came to Nihon is from Seattle, and a MAD M's fan)...
Anyway... can the Lakers steal game 6? |

Nobody really "deserves" a ring. They are earned and as yet KG hasnt earned it. |

My shot at the arrogant fans was only a little friendly banter with you don.
"used to be fan"
After returning to Australia in my adolescent years I stopped following the NBA (got involved heavily into baseball at that time) until I came to China 5 years ago when I started to follow it again. Because of the Yao Ming connection here I started to follow Houston. |

Fair enough (sheesh... that backfired on me, huh?).
Do you think it's fair to paint everyone with such broad strokes? In my experience, any time you try and categorize a fan-base so sweepingly, you're inevitably wrong. At least without providing some provisos in there.
And you 'used to be a fan'? Ugh... |

A very valid statement... Kobe hasn't changed greatly, but those around him have. Either new people, or guys have grown.
The main way Kobe's changed is his general attitude. |

I agree that noone deserves a ring.
The problem is that a lot of people look upon someones career as a failure if they don't win one whatever else they achieve. That leads people to feel that they need that final check mark on their career record to validate their career.
In the NFL Marino gets bumped down the All Time QB list by guys that I would say he was clearly better than because they got rings and he didn't,because people think that a team achievement makes an individual better someone whose team wasn't as good.
Kobe won the MVP this year whilst putting up worse numbers than the last couple of years and is widely regarded as a better team player because he trusts his teammates more this year, but the last couple of years his teammates weren't worth trusting so I'd argue that the best way for him to be a team player the last couple of seasons was to try and do it all himself as he did.In that way I don't really see that he has changed much but the results lead people to say that he has. |

On KG. No-one's saying that when they win he doesn't deserve it... but I did disagree with the statement "KG really deserves a ring." It may sound like semantics, but what I (and others) mean is that in the NBA, there is no 'deserve'. Either you get one, or you don't. No use spouting a heap of statistics and opinions and saying "because of that he deserves a ring". Doesn't work like that. The annals of NBA history are filled to the brim of guys who had phenomenal careers, but didn't win a title. Nice? Nice doesn't win titles.
mandati - Garnett told Minnesota management he'd leave, so they traded him to get some value in return. And KG - whilst not having a no-trade clause (only one player in the game has that) - had quite a bit of power over where he went due to there only being one year left on his contract.
And I don't think anyone said it was 'wrong' per se... just that it was mercenary. Simply a fact. And as was stated before, Payton & Malone took HUGE paycuts to move.
<<was Shaq being mercenary when he went to the Lakers in the 90s ?? >>
Really? Totally different situation, don't you think? |

Mandati,
was Shaq being mercenary when he went to the Lakers in the 90s ??
And I wouldnt bury the NBL just yet - it gets good following in regional areas esp Townsville Cairns Gold Coast .
The NBL suffered when the European leagues started spending big $$ on the players, and the Aussie dollar dropped, and it was far more inviting for the US players and Aussie guys to play there than in Aus |

Can someone explain to me why k.g doesnt deserve a ring ?
He has been a good player for the league...no rape charges ,doesnt bag out team mates ,by all accounts he has been a bright light in the league...i am not saying it should be handed to him but its good to see nice players getting rewarded..
As for him being a merc i dont get it ,he was traded to the team.Unlike malone and payton who came in as free agents..
In saying that i dont see the problem with buying players to win .If that was the case why have free agency??
with regards to the nbl , i can remember as a young un when i could watch at least 2-3 games a weekend and the finals where shown live..its dissapointing to see it fall to far.. |

Wow what a huge game! Pierce kicked ass again but Boston still lost. And Farmar played half a game and score a dozen! Kobe said after game 4 "we wet the bed" Well in this game they put their soiled PJ's under the pillow and got on with it! As a C's fan i hate it but as a basketball fan it makes it a better series....
Im going to admit that when Payton and Malone went to LA i thought they were sell outs. They went there for less money but only because they thought they could guarantee a ring. As a Boston fan, I was glad we got Allen and KG but im no hypocrit. I was dissapointed that we didnt build it we bought it. And im still dark. And I love my C's but i know if we dont take a title in the next few years, our drought is about to get a whole lot worse.... |

"Damm right don. And the great Karl Malone and Gary Payton were accused of being sell outs when they did the same thing""
Didnt Malone and Payton take pay cuts to go to LA? Not that it doesnt make the sellouts, just different kind of sell outs... |

I have absolutely no problem with it, but let's call it what it is.
When it comes time for KG to enter the HoF, he'll do so as a T-Wolf, not as a Celtic. Same with Allen, he'll be in either Buck or Sonic colours... not Boston. |

""KG's obtaining a ring this way is a lil' mercenary."
Damm right don. And the great Karl Malone and Gary Payton were accused of being sell outs when they did the same thing"
I don't see anything wrong in players coming towards the end of their careers chasing the ring that has elluded them,if they can still play and make meaningful contributions like Malone,Payton and KG did/have then I will consider that when I look at their career acheivements.
If they contribute like Payton in 05-06 with the Heat by playing terribly then I just disregard it when I look at what they acheived in their career.
Lots of players have moved for mercenary reasons in one form or another either chasing a ring or the money from a bigger market as long as they perform on the court good luck to them. |

"Basketball in Australia will surely die as a result"
Basketball in this country will never door. It has huge support and a huge fan base and participation rate. A National Basketball League in this country however, is in a pretty bad way.
Baseball in Australia has seen the same thing. Extremely popular, good quality, produced some really good players and is a popular sport as far as participation gos. But the National League, the old ABL, was badly marketed and organnis ed and died a slow death. |
