I think that the Magic really need a PF to allow them to play a system with Dwight in the Duncan role where his main job is help defence rather than having to do all the man defence and still try and help as much as he can.
If I was them I'd try and trade Tur koglu whilst his value is high and move Lewis into his natural SF position. Then if they can sort out their backcourt they might be contenders. |

| The Kobe/Gasol show is doing pretty well... Kobe & Pau ran the pick & roll to death in Orlando, and leave town winning 117-113. Kobe got 36pts, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, Gasol 30pts with 9 rebounds - and had Howard struggling to keep up, getting the big guy in foul trouble. |

Another thing - the West is oh-so-deep, and this makes it an increased risk.
As it stands at the moment, if the Suns dropped 5 games off the pace they're at now... KAPUT! Out of the playoffs. |

If it was guaranteed that Shaq would be able to play 30-33 minutes a game in the playoffs, then I think the trade makes sense because the positives should outweigh the negatives with him instead of Marion on the team.
I'd say the odds of that happening though are probably 3-1 with Shaq's health problems and that is a bit more risk than I would want to take if I was the Suns GM. |

Shaq trade thoughts.
The positives for the Suns.
Despite all the talk about Shaq's defense he isn't actually that bad and fulfills a much bigger need defensively than Marion does.Anybody with a post player kills the Suns as well as normally putting Amare in foul trouble neutralising the Suns biggest offensive threat. So Shaq can help out by letting Amare stay out of foul trouble as well as by his direct efforts.
Shaq gives the Suns a second option beside the pick and roll between Nash and Amare when they are playing in the halfcourt which they all ways end up having to do in the playoffs and even if he is missing shots he shouldn't he is still shooting 58% which is very efficient.
The talk about how will Shaq cope with the pace of the Suns is overrated because a fast breaking team doesn't need everyone running down the court, so Shaq can make his own way down the court to join the play if they pull back to run a halfcourt play rather than shooting quickly.
Shaq still gets doubled a lot and if he does it will open up space for the sho0ters on the Suns to hit open 3's with the better spacing.
The negatives for the Suns
By far the biggest one is this none of the positives have any chance of happening if he isn't on the court and given his record the last few years I wouldn't want to bet much on him staying injury free this season once he gets back nevermind the next 2 years.
His FT shooting is absolutely horrendous and makes him an offensive liability if he is on the court at the end of a game.
He is picking up fouls that are going to limit his minutes even if he is healthy enough to play.
I think that it is a brave move by the Suns to make the trade especially with such a new GM basically risking it all on what is either going to be a masterstroke or a disaster.
The talk of why a number 1 seed in the West would take that big of a risk is easily explained by their 14-13 conference record and the fact they are 4-9 against Top 8 West teams. |

oh don dont worry i still love ya..
but you have said that on numerous occasions.
Do you subscribe to the theory that the majority is always correct?
The majority say its a bad trade and it may prove to be correct but untill then each opinion has an equal validity of being correct. And just cause we (this site) doesnt conform to the rest of said sites doesnt mean our opinions are invalid.

<<Silly arguement that don. There is no right or wrong in opinions.>>
Actually mandati, I'd say that's a ridiculous thing to assert! Indeed, no 'right or wrong' in opinions, but that's not the only thing we do in discussions. Additionally, the validity of stuff comes into question. Especially when trying to support an 'opinion' in an 'argument'. |

Wait... are you saying that you guys know more than folks who get paid to do what we do for free? You don't take the word of people who a) do it for a living, or b) have far more access to the athletes themselves -- over the Y7 boards?
Hell... Scoop Jackson? You're placing a guy who says "...the Suns are outthinking all y'all." as the font of all knowledge? ;)
Same site (ESPN):
Chad Ford - "...the Heat-Suns trade is more lopsided (in favor of the Heat) than the recent trade of Gasol to the Lakers..."
Henry Abbott - ". he's blowing layups. Layup after layup after layup after layup. It's horrible to watch."
Tim Legler said on a podcast that he spoke to a heap of GMs, and without fail every one of them said they'd take Marion over O'Neal.
Jeff Van Gundy said he doesn't like it, and stated that it's a dangerous move, as the Suns dropping 5 games could see them out of the playoffs.
Honestly - who would you take? |

<<Fine on stops - but you don't really think Shaq's going to a better job on any of the players you named, do you? >>
a tandom of shaq/amare will do a better job on those players then marion amare.
<<Not saying that the Suns are going to miss out, I will make a bet with you know that they do decline from where they are now tho' in the rankings. Wanna take it? A 6pack of local beers...>>
given that there is only 2.5 games difference between the top 6 seeds in the west, you cant say whether they would finish top seed if they had marion or shaq. and like i said previously, this tade is for the playoffs. and i think they are now better equiped to compete in the playoffs. so i think they will do better then last year, which means making the west finals, and i think they can win the west too. hell, i think they will win it all. so if you want to have a bet on that - im in.
<<Why is it that I frequently read stuff here that I read no-where else? :P>>
if you didnt like it, then you wouldnt bother arguing with us ;)
<<You tell me: why are Miami fans rejoicing and Phoenix fans down in the dumps...>>
i have no idea why miami fans are rejoicing. their centre is mark blount. they traded for a guy who is more happy been second option on a 9 win team then a third option a title contender and who wants a max contract (surely miami are gonna let him walk and rebuild - arent they??) marcus banks might be their starting point guard. all they have is a banged up dwayne wade. but they have gotten rid of shaqs massive contract and given themselves cap flexability (if they dont max up marion). infact, just say marion does make them slightly better and they win a couple more games, it will only decrease their chances of getting a good lottery position to have a shot at one of the big three - beasley, mayo or rose. so all in all, they are still gonna be terrible and with possibly less chance of picking up their next franchise player. got me screwed why they ... |

Im not talking up the East either. Boston and the Pistons are flying and i think the Magic will will take it to both these teams come playoffs. But other than that, the East is as bad as it ever was.
The Suns conference win % currently sits at 51% and the Lakers at about 69% which is a huge difference which obviously means the Suns are getting the job done against the Eastern teams while the Lakers are dropping games they shouldnt. I do believe that this will catch up on the Suns in the next 30 games, especially with Gasol on board the good ship Jackson. But i also believe the Suns will still be a contender. |
