Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
Heat need to win now with Shaq nearing the end, get Ricky as a 3rd wheel.
_____________________

The Ricky Davis trade puts Miami in contention for the Southeastern Division title. This division title won't be easy because Washington and Orlando also have the potential to win the southeast.

Heat made a stupid decision to sign Penny Hardaway. They should be thinking long-term, and stop signing these old guys. Alonzo Mourning is probably retiring after the season, and Shaq will only be around for a few more years.

Miami need to think long term and sign some good young players.

This trade was a good move, but more could be done to improve the team.

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
Rookie deals are for 2 years with a team option to extend them for a 3rd and fourth season. After the fourth year they are restricted free agents, as long as their club extends them a qualifying offer, giving their club the right to match any offer they receive from another club.

Philly and someone else I can't remember at the moment who also isn't going to contend anytime soon are the only clubs at the moment that have the capspace to make a realistic offer for either Deng or Gordon financially, but not from a basketball standpoint.

The Bulls won't have to give either of them a max deal I doubt ,much more likely is a deal for each starting at between $8.5-10m a year.

If they each get $10m starting in 08-09 the Bulls would have 12 guys including everyone of any importance except Duhon( if you think he is important) signed up for just under the likely luxury tax level.

The best chance either player has of getting near max money is to play out 08-09 for their qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent after that season ,because quite a few clubs are going to have a reasonable amount of cap room then and maybe a bidding war will get them a better deal than they could get now or at the end of the coming season.

Given both were drafted in 04 I thought rookie contracts were only 3 years? And can the Bulls afford to give them both max deals as well as keep a competitive team?

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
I disagree neon.

Chicago are actually in very good shape to sign them up if they want to because of the way they have structured their other contracts.Wallace,Hinrich ,Smith and Nocioni all have deals that decrease rather than increase year by year to free up space for deals for Deng and Gordon. If they can do deals for around $10m a year for each of them they won't even go over the luxury tax level. If they have to pay a bit more then they might have to pay a little for a year or two which I would think ownership is ok with.

Nobody has any money to sign them to a big offer sheet at the end of this year, so at worst it would be at the end of the 08-09 season before either of them could get paid as free agents after playing out that season for their qualifying offers.

I don't think the Bulls will be able to keep both Deng and Gordon at the end of this season as I'm pretty sure they'll go for their shot at massive paydays....

Ben Wallace is eating cap space and Hinrich was resigned for 47.5 million, can't remember for how long...

Regardless of what you would get for straight up trades I don't quite know how Paxson is going to work out who to let go...

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
i kinda like this deal from both sides as well.

MIAMI get the third scorer that they need after wade and shaq in davis, as well as another big body.

T-WOLVES remove a couple of older players that will not play any part in their future, allowing them to give more time to their youth. they were going to be a bottom 5 side at best in the league anyway, now they might be bottom 2 or 3 at best. i hate walker for so many different reasons, but i read somewhere that the wolves have 18 players under contract, meaning they have to drop 2, so more trades are scheduled, and i would hope for their sake that walker is part of those trades.

see what happens i guess.

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
Taking Walker is fine.Ideally they would have done the deal for deals that expire at the end of this season but being unable to get that deal this is probably the best that is out there.

Having him instead of Blount saves them $8m in 09-10,plus he is likely to be bought out for a reasonable price.Even if they have to pay out his full deal minus the vets minimum that he could get somewhere that takes their savings from the deal to over $12m.

Minny's side of the deal is all financial the quality of the players or lack of it coming back is irrelevant.Plus dumping Blount pleases Al.

Now that McHale has done a decent job of the dismantling of all of his f#ck ups ,if they would only sack him and let Hoiberg do the rest of the rebuild they would have had a great off season in Minny.

Very good trade for Minny and the Heat.

Heat need to win now with Shaq nearing the end, get Ricky as a 3rd wheel.

Minny saves a load of money, gets rid of Blount who big Al dislikes from his Boston days, gets more playing time for the young guys to sort out who is worth an extension at the end of the year and pick up a draft pick which could turn out to be a lotto pick in a couple of years.

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
Riley finally lost patience with Walker, huh? Its a bad trade as I wouldn't want Antoine anywhere near a upcoming star like Jefferson incase his poor work ethic rubs of on Al...

BTW Do you think Minnesota will win more than 7 games this season?

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
i wouldnt take too much notice of a pre season game. maybe they were getting hammered in the the first half and played their fringe guys in the second half against bostons big 3 which blew the margin out. who knows really. like i say, its pre season. but still, 26% is 26%, and thats pretty horrible.

but i am intrigued by the knicks. like you say, they do have an all-star lineup. but, they have heaps of players who play the same position.

1 - randolph and curry are both big men who can score a heap but play little defense.
2 - marbury and nate robinson are both shoot first point guards.
3 - crawford and q-rich are long range bombers that dont have a whole lot more to their game (a little harsh on crawford i know but they are of the same ilk).
4 - lee and balkman who are both great role players who rebound, defend and skrap.

all these guys are pretty talented, but together, i just dont think they mesh well. in saying that, i wouldnt be surprised if they were quite good this year and made the playoffs. and i wouldnt be surprised if they were bad either. nor would i be surprised if they were really bad too. i would say the knicks are a fringe playoff team at best.

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
The Knicks lost by 40 points to Boston in a pre-season game 101-61...

The result mightn't matter but the Knicks shooting was only 26% and Boston shot 56% as well as 70% from 3 PT...

What everyone's seeing with New York's All Star lineup so far is that if the shots aren't dropping they give up and take the rest of the game off...

Someone like Phil Jackson would make this team instant contenders especially int the East but it says a lot about Isaiah Thomas that the media aren't even rating this team as play off contenders
______________________

Isiah Thomas is unprofessional and his behaviour is unacceptable. He is an NBA head coach and he goes and sexually harasses a team executive.

His coaching is terrible and he cannot manage the team. If Phil Jackson or Pat Riley or any other good coach were in charge of that roster, they would at the very least get into the playoffs. The Knicks salary problems are currently spiralling out of control.

I'm waiting for Charles Dolan to take charge and bring in new management.

Re:News in the NBA... Reply to this message
houston would be a pretty handy acquisition on a contending team that needed a spark off the bench. on the knicks he will just add to what is already a roster filled with talented players that just dont gel together. there is only so many shots to go around between the likes of randolph, curry, marbury, crawford, richardson and houston. i think it will be another entertaining season from the knicks - in a bad way that is.

blazers have more bad injury news - brandon roys heel is flaring up again causing him pain and discomfort. they have decided to rest it in hope that it gets better - which i dont understand. it flaired up on the first day of training camp, so i would think rest is going to do little to fix the problem. i say put him under the knife and fix the problem for good and then have him come back later in the season at full strength. i am now just waiting for aldridge to go down ;)

on paper a line up of Marbury, Crawford, Q-Rich, Randolph and Curry is a hell of a team if you also add Lee and Houston to the mix....

Knicks sign Allan Houston.
I had a good laugh at this. NY, not content to pay the guy 25 million a season to sit on his a s s now give him another pay packet. I never thought much of Houston in his prime. Could shoot and score a bit, but so could 90% of shooting guards given the amount of ball he had.

It will be interesting to see if they do manage to get anything for him as expirings on their own lately haven't been worth much and I am not sure what else the Lakers are prepared to give up along with him.
