China's credentials have been severely questioned , after losing in a match to the Brisbane Bullets at home and at full strength

hey don

Now that Greece have outlasted 3 of the 5 European teams on your Olympics long list of potential winners, have you changed your mind about them having less chance than some you listed?

i think anyone who plays the nba is pretty good by international standards. its just the slovenians who play in the nba arent great by nba standards.

they are going pretty well. unbeaten and missing brezec, nachbar and udrih - not great nba players but i am sure they would make a difference at a euro championships.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
Twice in the history of the sport have they finished top 4 in premier international competitions... the ONE time they threatened was last year, where they got absolutely demolished in the final.
I see their performance as an aberration. A pleasant one, but an aberration none-the-less.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
not trying to say greece will win it, but i think the silver they got at the worlds is something that would give them a lot of confidence going into the olympics (and they are also the defending european champs from 2005). without any nba stars (or players even) they still play a good brand of international basketball. i will be interested to see how they go at the european championships (starts next week). but then again, they may have already peaked and are now on a downwards spiral. we shall see.

Greece have only finished in the FIBA WC top 4 3 times. They've never done so in the Olympics.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
absolutely - i knew there was someone i was missing. GREECE. they will definately be up there, although, i think the only reason they did so well at the worlds was cause they had that parochial home town support. those greek fans are crazy.

does anyone know what is going on with the greek centre known as 'baby shaq'. he got drafted by the clippers a couple of years back and then had a really good tournament at the worlds. he wanted to go to the nba but he couldnt get out of his european contract, but word was he was gonna be coming to the nba this year. given the situation with brand, he might be the perfect situation for him to come into the league and play some decent minutes. the clips need him.

also, tu/rkey and serbia montenegro. two other contenders for the top 8 at the olympics.

Surprised to see that noone has mentioned the beaten finalists from the last world championships as having a chance.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
i would be surprised if china make the quarter finals... let alone the top 5. they only really have yao. yi has already proved he isnt up to it yet in the summer league. it wont get any easier at the olympics. after him, they have nothing.

as for slovenia - i would say anyone who plays in the nba is up to international standards, just the slovenian players who play in the nba arent up to nba standards. if you get my drift that is.

but still, i think the argi's at full strength could still push the usa. they only lost to them today by 15. so i wouldnt think the gold medal is a fore-gone conclusion.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
No idea on the actual medal table... but I'd suggest look out for:
USA (duh!)
Argentina
Lithuania
Italy
Spain

Others: Germany, France, Australia... maybe even Brazil.

And... by-the-way on qualification - Last Olympic gold-medal winner does NOT automatically qualify. Current World Champion does.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
Ummm... I have no idea why you're getting so excited by China.
Sure, they'll be good... but they will lack depth - and to be honest, I'll be surprised if they finish in the top 5. They are yet to finish in the top 4 in the history of the modern Olympics. I would not be at all surprised if the Australian team finishes ahead of them.

They won't stand a chance against the US or China.

Re:Basketball at the Beijing Olympics Reply to this message
tlkr, probably a bit too early to start making predictions about beijing but i reckon you are spot on with spain, argentina and usa.

i wouldnt discount the aussies either. ATM they are missing 4 or 5 players including 3 starters (bogut, anstey and bruton), so if they get their best team on the court they could challenge for a semi final spot.

i think the european championships are on soon, so we will get a pretty good indication on how those teams are going. i think france and italy are pretty good, and slovenia (yes slovenia) has 5 nba players, so you cant discount any of them.
