| The rumour from TWolves fans is that Al wants a deal starting at around $10m in which case he is going to be a bargain. |

if i was minnesota i would be trying to get al signed asap. after all, he was the main reason they traded kg.
if i was al, i would certainly consider putting it off till the end of the season. a big year and his value goes through the roof. also i would want to see how the t-wolves use him and to see if mchale does any more dumb ass trades. i would hate for al to commit to a 5 year deal which would take him into his prime and waste it because an incompetent gm traded away some nice assets that they had to build around. conversely though, if he got injured, it would majorly effect his value next year. |

| The TWolves will do a deal for Al because they both want to and with him as the main part of the KG deal they have to. Next to nobody else at present has the cap space to sign him to a deal after this season so it isn't as though they are in danger of losing him, it just makes sense to show good will to him by doing the deal early.Plus if he puts up the sort of numbers he may well do next it is probably going to be cheaper to do it now |

Hey do you think Al Jefferson will re-sign with T'wolves?
Minnesota have until Oct.31 or they will have to wait until season's end and risk him fielding offers from other teams.... |

| don, any word on the kobe situation?? read a few articles over the last few weeks on how things have calmed down, but i thought you may have picked something up in blog world. the lakers havent done to much to appease his original requests - do you think he will start up again or pull a no show at training camp? or is everything rosey in lakerland? |

i thought thats pretty much what i said about the usa team.
on the argi's, they are missing oberto and manu. i would think along with louis scola (who apparently is having a very nice tournament - spurs may regret dumping him off to division rival houston to cut payroll), they would be the most important players on the team. thats a pretty big loss for a team that only has 4 or 5 nba players on it. |

Yeah... but I think it's about 'pride' (for the argentine team).
And even so - the US team has looked focused, driven & as if they have something to prove (they have). Without a doubt the best 'team performance' I've seen from the US in many a year. This group aren't concerned with individual performances (well... most of them). They are on a mission. Kobe's been a defensive monster. Against Brazil he totally dominated Barbosa... destroyed him.
Speaking of Brazil, the US beat them 113-76. Argentina needed an overtime to beat Brazil 86-79... and were lucky to win. I know sports doesn't work like that but I'd suggest that Arg. are in for it. |

<<But Al = Dwight? >>
never my point. al is 'comparable' to dwight.
and i think the comparisons will start this year. al's first 2 years in the league were below par, thus no reason to compare. he exploded last year to the point where is stats matched up to dwights. they both came out of HS in the same draft. dwight has always had the media following his every move as he was the number one pick. baby al will now get media as he was traded for KG, thus throwing him into the spot light. its a great story.
<<Yeah... I mean, who's in there? I mean... Argentina... pffft.>>
they havent actually played the argi's yet, so i will give the benefit of the doubt there to mandati on this one. this usa team is on a mission. it has been purposely selected to perform against the international style of play. they are trying to restore national pride back into a sport they dominated for so long. the opposition they have played so far you would expect them to destroy. still a long way to go till the olympics, but it looks as though they are heading in the right direction.
on another note - why is agrentina playing in this olympic qualification tournament? as gold medalists, shouldnt they automatically qualify?? |

lol dg...
Point is - have you ever read, anywhere... by anyone... other than here... a commentary that puts Al on equal footing with Dwight?
Sloppy often offers great insights (and I wish my team had as big an upside as his does at the mo'!)... hell... a lot of the guys here do. But Al = Dwight? Errr... nuh-uh.
Related: anyone seen any of the FIBA Americas? I have seen a bit, and YOWZERS... they look the goods! |

<<thats your opinion. mine differs.>>
And you are more than entitled to it.
However... with *my opinion* it's one shared by pretty much every basketball writer in existence.
This made me laugh. Ever read the nba rumour column? It's total rubbish. Just because a "writer" puts pen to paper doesn't make it fact.
You're a good bloke and all Don, and have some great insights into the NBA, but that was pretty funny. |

"Worked out ok for Shaq. :p"
Having looked at the figures that is actually a rather large slight on Shaq.
Taking 2002-03 a season at the end of Shaq's prime which is as far back as the figures go for prior seasons on 82games 32% of Shaq's FG attempts were jump shots,45% were close shots presumably lay ups and hooks etc and 22% were dunks.
In 2006-07 Howard had 17% jump shots,48% close shots and 31% were dunks.
Their games really aren't that similar. |

<<Indeed a popularity contest. So, explain to me why a guy from Orlando was more popular than a guy from Boston... :)>>
howard has been better marketed better to the fans mainly because he was the number one draft pick. jefferson has had little to no hoopla about his career. the buzz is starting though, it will happen.
<<And no-one said it was wrong to use stats, just that there was a big difference between reality and FLs (an issue that you brought up... not me),>>
quite aware there is a massive difference between reality and FL. my point was it was having those two guys on my fantasy team was how i noticed how similar their stats where. thats all. wasnt suggesting anything else. you seemed to have disregarded the stats of the players previously because 'you watch the impact that both have on games'. that had nothing to do with FL, and if thats how you want to differntiate the two players, thats fine. |

zero.
but if you want to use all-star teams (lets face it, more of a popularity contest then anything) and all-nba teams to compare the two, why is it worng to use statistics to compare the two. i undertand their is more to basketball, or any sport then stats, but surely they give you a pretty fair guide to what is going on.
<<Look, honestly? In years to come, we don't know what will be.>>
fair call, but i am sure wwe shall both monitor them pretty closely next year. |
