exactly my thinking glenn. Mitch Brown will only be a 2nd yr player, and a kpp takes a few yrs to develop, I don't think Lonergan is up to holding down a permanent fwd spot (too easily pushed out 1 on 1, decent on the lead, but didn't take his chances up fwd this yr) and maybe Hawkins can move into the chf role if he can improve his fitness - Pods could still play 3 or 4 yrs and help out some of the kids with his experience from VFL level.

Draft summary
"We were very happy and we think that all the boys that we've drafted have earned their opportunity. We were happy to be able to call their names out. It was a combination of best players and positions - we think the blokes that we drafted had played very well over the course of the year, and with the national and rookie drafts we got a good mix of players."

Player comments
Selection No. 21: Jack Weston
DOB: 03/04/91, Height: 189cm, Weight: 88kg
Recruited from: Gippsland
"Jack's speed and run with the ball has been fantastic over the course of the year, and we all really think he's got a chance to use that at AFL level."

Selection No. 37: Ben Johnson
DOB: 13/02/87, Height: 195cm, Weight: 95kg
Recruited from: Geelong/Bell Park
"Ben has played well as a forward and a backman in the VFL this year. He's very big and a fantastic mark."

Selection No. 50: James Podsiadly (Geelong, VFL)
DOB: 1/09/81, Height: 193cm, Weight: 102kg
Recruited from: Geelong
"James has been tremendous as a forward in the VFL in the last couple of years, and his body's feeling very good. His body is better than your normal 28-year-old."

Selection No. 61: Jesse Stringer
DOB: 03/04/91, Height: 182cm, Weight: 73kg
Recruited from: Port Adelaide Magpies (SA)
"Jesse's a young fellow, a midfielder with outstanding ball-use and is very creative. He's been a captain of his school in South Australia, and had also played for the Port Adelaide Magpies in their junior team. We like his inside, midfield work."

happy with the Cats selections. Pods could easily replace Mooney at the end of the season if Mooney decides to retire - someone who can step straight in and have an impact. Looking fwd to seeing these guys play

Dont know if the height is such an issue Nye, i mean take a look at our man mountain who plays in the ruck now, all the height in the world and as useless as *** on a bull,

Having someone who is versatile to go down back too is what we need IMO, as shown by last year with our desimated backline, I have faith in our recruitiung staff, they havent let me down yet. :-)

Bring on 2010 I say!!

Re:vics dominate draft,SA again behind Reply to this message
Hawthorn Football Club have selected Wayde Skipper and Jarrod Kayler-Thomson at pick no 13 and 29 respectively in the AFL Rookie Draft held today.

The Club also used pick no 42 to pre-select NSW Scholarship recipient Michael Johnston.

In recruiting Skipper, 26 and Kayler-Thomson, 24, Hawthorn took advantage of the recent rule change that allows clubs to claim two mature-age players over the age of 23.

Standing at 193cm, Skipper is a noted goalkicker and can play in both defence and attack. Having been delisted from the Western Bulldogs at the end of the 2009 season, Skipper began pre-season training with Hawthorn and has impressed with his attitude and application.

General Manager Player Personnel and Strategy Chris Pelchen spoke about how the 26 year old can bolster Hawthorn’s ruck stocks.

“Wayde is an outstanding athlete and has the ability to play in the ruck, but is also versatile enough to swing into defence or attack” he said.

Skipper will be joined by Jarrod Kayler-Thomson - the second of the Hawks’ mature-age selections. Pelchen is similarly excited about the prospects of the 24 year old who has spent the last five years developing his game in Perth, Western Australia.

“Jarrod is a player in the same mould as Grant Birchall. He can play across the half forward, wing and half back line and is a prodigious kick of the ball” he said.

Hawthorn used pick no 42 to elevate 18 year old Michael Johnston, who spent three years in the NSW Scholarship Scheme. Having shown an outstanding application to training and fitness, Pelchen expects the youngster to develop his football further at Box in 2010.

According to Pelchen, Hawks supporters can look forward to seeing the two mature-age rookies running around in the brown and gold next year.

“We fully expect both Wayde and Jarrod to play senior footy in 2010” he said.

Re:vics dominate draft,SA again behind Reply to this message
Pelchen said the decision to take Skipper over the other players with AFL experience was a tough choice, but in the end the Hawks presented a united front.

"All calls like that are difficult but it was a unanimous choice amongst our coaches and recruiting staff that Wayde was our preferred option," he said.

"We arrived at that decision yesterday mindful of the fact that a draft can throw up some idiosyncrasies of uncertainty. We couldn't publicly state it and Wayde wasn't aware he was our preferred option until today.

"Some people might question whether he is tall enough to play as a ruckman at 194cm, but his outstanding leap combined with the versatility appealed to us. We didn't believe in picking a player that only had the defensive ruck capacity but at the same time would give us options in other areas of the ground."

"Ablett was seen talking with one of Tiger Woods mistresses in Las Vegas ......

does that mean anything brownwit?"

I think judging by the sheer volume, we've ALL talked with one of Tigers' mistresses at some point in our lives. 6 degrees of seperation with tiger becomes more like 2 degrees..
just think boys, next time you find yourself with a hottie, tigers probably already been there..

Re:vics dominate draft,SA again behind Reply to this message
it was a great story by the Herald Sun last week, titled something like "Ablett met Tigers mistress" or some other cr@p.

End of season trip and probably half the team ended up in America to watch various sporting events and what happened was Gary and a few others (sounded like a larger then smaller group) went to Vegas for a Halloween party at one of the clubs or casinos (whatever). While their the group was introduced to the person (mistress), they say high and go their separate ways back to what they were doing.

Sounds like a typical herald sun story.

Re:vics dominate draft,SA again behind Reply to this message
lets see if you can understand this brownoz.

Nathan Ablett left 2 yrs ago - nothing to do with the current team. We have had other players retire since then, so why not mention them also?

Geelong has never asked players to take a pay cut, just that they won't necessarily be able to get a pay rise - so not losing money from previous contracts but that they may not be earning much more.

Mumford was staying at the Cats on reduced pay until the Swans added a 4th yr - he said that the 4yr contract is what swayed him to move because it meant that he knew what he was doing for the next 4yrs. If it was just 3yrs offered by both clubs then it is highly likely he was staying at the Cats, plus he is on $300k a yr which is more then half of the premiership team so who was meant to take the pay cut? He is a rookie, its a risk offering him 4 yrs and the Cats would have been stupid to do so. In terms of actual ruck ability, Blake has it all over Mumford but Mumford is more versatile around the ground.

Ablett & Pickering have admitted to talking to the GC, so what. As Pickering said, he isn't the 1st player to talk to them and he won't be the last. Does it mean he is going to the GC, no. Surely if it was a serious meeting they would have been meeting at the club and not a hotel - seems pretty casual to me.

blake has some character issues the hawks would not have liked,no way we would want a guy who sprays ex teamates like he does
mumford was geelongs best ruck, they could have kept him if they were willing to pay him what he is worth, they gave a big speal how everyone wants to take a pay cut to keep the group together, well nathan ablett gone, mumford and now gary has been seen talking to the GC coaches and recruiters

Re:vics dominate draft,SA again behind Reply to this message
nye, Hawks should have tried to deal with the Cats for Blake (meaning we keep Mumford) because he might be a little slow around the ground but he wins the hitouts. He has been in the top 5 hitout winners the last couple of yrs and he is still improving in that area.

Absolute midgit for a ruckman! Buddy is taller than he is!

Fark we are going to struggle to win a HO this season, at least we'll have a gun midfield that should be able to compensate for that.
