Won't happen, can't happen, shouldn't happen. Dumbest idea since Andre said "fk it, let's get high"!

That's what I am saying merge all the "metro" leagues and play grading games to work out who goes where in a full 3 or 4 division league.

The minor state leagues should all merge too in a similar manor to feed a team in to the higher tier each year while another comes down.

There are teams in the UK soccer system that have gone down and stayed down. Others have come up and survived - eg Fulham and yet more that Yo-Yo - West Bromwich Albion. If a club really wants to do well it will simple as that. There is no true league until the league has more than one table. League champions given silverware for finishing first. An FA cup style system open to all registered clubs resulting in a final in Sep instead of this silly (RL too) 8 of 16 making it to a knock out final series with some getting more than one life.

ever wondered why aussie rules pulls bigger crowds than rugby -females love aussie rules and make up 50% attendences where as in rugby 10 to 20 % of crowd is female soccer too draws a big % of females so like politics it,s the female vote that wins power in the end

vic inter conference games would all be away games for 2 good reasons 1-fairness 2vics playing interstate would draw bigger crowds.of course aussie rules is on the world stage-and where do you think the yanks got some of their ideas fromwhen they changed from rugby union to gridiron in the late 1920,s it,s a real pity they just didn,t adopt our game and be done with it.there wereclose ties betweenyanks and aussie rules during the 2nd world war.us milatry were stationed at the mcg and melbourne inparticular benefitted from the americans greater degree of professionalism in football-hence melbournes great sucess in the 40,s,50,s &60,s

Re:A Third WA AFL team??? Reply to this message
Games in Canberra draw very few fans, getting a team going there full time is not going to happen, their small population already has the Brumbies Raiders and, soon enough, an A-league side. No room for footy.

Also, dividing the comp into a Vic division and a non-Vic division would make the travel divide even greater! West Coast, for example, would have to go to QLD twice and NSW 3 times (if Canberra was there) every year, not to mention trips to Tassie and SA too. Where as all the Vic teams would have no real travel to commit too.

Adrian is right, 16 teams spreads the talent pool thin, 18 will be a lot worse, 20 is just stupid!

14 would be ideal - but that would require the death of a number of teams (5 if we are to give Tassie a run). That is a lot of disgruntled fans out there - the game would take over a decade to recover from that.

I'm sure we toweled a couple of teams but can't remember who...oh yeah Richmond Round 1...I know this because hubby is a Tiger supporter and he wasn't happy with The Blues for making his team look so bad.

I'm looking forward to seeing how we go next season without Fev in the forward line...I just hope we can kick enough goals to win and keep us in the top eight by the end of the season.

ferra - "then form 2 conferences-Vic conference rest of Australia conference.each conf. plays each team in own conf. twice and teams in other conf"

so when the vic teams play teh rest of aust. conference team is it a home game or an away game?

Re:A Third WA AFL team??? Reply to this message
the finals system for the 2 conf,s would be simple1v4 2v3 all knock-out finalswinners of week 1 play in week 2 for the right to play in the GF week 3 easy quick and simple.AFL is now a world game and if cricket is any guide which I think it is victorian bushrangers have more fans than the total population of Victoria so as India is to cricket so is USA Europe to Aussie rules

Re:A Third WA AFL team??? Reply to this message
Get over it....we just dont have the population and therefore the talent pool to have what other countries have as in their divisions and conferences etc etc...

GEEZUS...THE AFL struggle with enough talented player in a 16 team comp....what do we have??? 4 or 5 talented players in each team at best and the rest just making up the numbers thats what we have so just get the AFL to 14 teams and leave it at that...

Re:A Third WA AFL team??? Reply to this message
One of the reasons the whole Divisions/relegation thing didn't happen was because there just wasn't enough money floating around to support all of the teams.
We have the Non-victorian teams as kind of merged entities so that there would be enough money/supporters for these teams to function at a more professional level.

The big mistake was not in some way rationalising the Victorian based comp further, as painful as that may be. The notion that every Melbourne based club could successfully operate at that level was incorrect. Sure your Carlton, Collingwood Essondon type clubs will, but others were going to struggle because they were not so different to any other suburban team from any other league. Just a bit bigger.

Re:A Third WA AFL team??? Reply to this message
fat - I don't get what you are saying......

WAFL, SANFL, VFL etc.. are all state leagues ... if say the bottom team was demoted .. who gets promoted? and how do you introduce a bye i nthe state league when for example South Fremantle are promoted from the WAFL and Melbourne gets demoted from the AFL to the VFL. VFL gets an extra team and WAFL goes from a 9 team league to an 8 team league.

for a conference liek the English soccer to work all leagues would, for my mind, have to merge.

But I doubt many of the state teams would be able to afford it
