saw the press conference where he announced his illness last night, what a champion. to front the media and do it with such a great attitude and will, shows what a great man he is.

Melbourne better drag thier *** s of the ground this week and play as if they are ten foot tall and bullet proof.

Best of luck to Jimmy and a speedy recovery
Seems ironic that the man who set the record for most consecutive games of football without illness/injury is diagnosed with cancer at 43.

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
A DEFIANT Jim Stynes has told a press conference he will treat this week like any other, despite his battle with cancer.

An emotional Stynes, 43, said he found a lump on his back three weeks ago.

He told assembled reporters he had "a journey to go on".

However, he insisted he was not stepping down as chairman of Melbourne footy club, saying that he was merely "taking a break".

After mentioning his two young children, Stynes paused for some time, before asking that he and his family be given some privacy and time "to heal".

Stynes said was reluctant to go into the details of his prognosis.

"In a few weeks, I'll be back doing normal things," he said. "You won’t even know there was anything wrong."

"Don’t treat me any differently and I don't want anybody looking at me in a weird way. I'm still the same guy and I’m going to get on with my life."

He insisted he was going to approach this week like any other week.

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
Well, Queenslanders may watch the "prime time AFL" if channel 10 didnt feed us rubbish matches like Melbourne vs North Melbourne or a "blockbuster" Collingwood vs Melbourne
FFS are they seriously trying to get people to subscribe to Foxtel and watch the NRL???

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
as i see it i reckon we have 10 Vic clubs 2 in perth 2in SA - 1 in Tassie & 1 just across the border in NSW , which really is a AFL strong hold. I doubt if the Queensland teams went and the Swans that it would make that much diference to the amount the AFl made through TV rites. As it is now AFL doesn't rate well in both SYd & Queensland.Well its not 'prime time' so it could hardly be bringing in the 'buck'!

I propose that the Demons merge with the GC team, wear the new GC jersey, and be called Gold Coast team.

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
Hahaha, it didn't in 1996, and it sure as fk doesn't now!!!!

Plus, if we merged with them now, it would be the Hawthorn Demon-Hawks - we'd amuse them for 3 years and then drop the Demon part off :P Much like what Manly did to Norths in the NRL.

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
The Dees are the oldest, continually surviving footy club in the world (all codes). Losing them would be a massive blow for the game.

Ok, so their on field performances have matched their off field ones, and they have a fickle and disinterested supporter base. But they still hold a valuable place in the game - what they need is an attitude overhaul (and a 5hit load of cash!).

I don't want to see them fold or relocate. A merger may be inevitable though, if it is, they must keep the name Melbourne. If this happens, the MFC will continue to be the oldest club in the world - just that they'd be the 'Bulldogs' or whatever. No different to when they adopted the name 'Demons'.

Re:Jimmy Stynes to stand down Reply to this message
gees you guys are harsh! Jim Stynes being ill is hardly going to mean the club falls over. I've said this a million times ...the Afl earns over 300 mil per season Melbourne are a part of it & deserve to reamian so. 300 million!!- hardly the Dees fault Demetriou thinks thats all his money.

By the way i can't stand Melbourne -hate 'em with a passion , but i'd rather that passion remained than have it gone . Stay in the comp Dees so my boys can kick your pathetic *** asses time again.
