yarz - do you think that if Port entered the league before the Crows that you would be called Port Magpies? Don't you think there might have been some issues with that considering that the AFL already had a team called the Magpies. Or should Collingwood - a founding member of the AFL have been forced to change their name & colours?

The Swans may have changed location (kept the same name they had been as for a while), but they were still the same team. And how exactly does Footscracy changing names to Western Bulldogs or North Melbourne changing to the Kangaroos & back to North Melbourne change the history of the club? Geelong has been known as different names, including the Pivots so does that mean because they are now the Cats we should scr@p the history when they had a different name?

Port Power is a different team to Port Magpies - what don't you understand about that?

we were port adelaide..the magpies in 1990..the Vic clubs joined forces to stop us getting in, they teamed up with the SANFL to form a composite side to block port's entry. we finally were allowed to join the league in 1997, but werent allowed to be called the magpies anymore, had to change our colours, became Port Power, had to maintain the Port Adeladie MAgpies in the SANFL to keep it a viable league for Crows recruitment and elsewhere. We still tried to hold onto our tradition but the Vics and the SANFL try to state we are a new club, not port adelaide anymore, but in the same breath, we have to maintain a team in the SANFL. If we changed our identity completely, became the Port Mariners or Western Ravens, then the SANFL would say you cant do that either, and must maintain links to Port Adelaide Magpies to prop up the SANFL competition.
We committed treason apparently cos we had enough of the SANFL and wanted to play in the VFL which had become the AFL with its inception of Brisbane and West Coast, and the relocating of South Melbourne to Sydney, becoming the Sydney Swans(notice how they dont give up their traditions, even though they changed their name, like the Western Bulldogs and the Kangaroos), anyway...meanwhile, those who were on the intial push into the AFL along with the majority of players were from the Port Adelaide FC Magpies based at Alberton Oval where they have their headquarters. The SANFL made Port Power relocate the team called the Port Adelaide Magpies to other facilities, though they would play their home games at alberton oval. The SANFL controls Port Power, not the board or fans of Port Adelaide and thats how it has been ever since they accepted the second licence for an SA team in the AFL. Port Adelaide FC became divided, with those who help set up the Port Magpies in the SANFL seeing their tradition being sold out to the SANFL. To this day, the club is not united. Only way for that to happen is to breakaway from the SANFL completely.

Geez yars you really have a something annoying you don't you. haha
I actually can't recall ever saying anything derogatory about Port at all.
In fact i have fond memories of them finishing top of the ladder and getting all excited about a premiership, and then two years in a row the pies travelled to SA to beat them at their home ground.
This set their finals campaign on its ear and they exited in striaght games LOL!!! Is that causing you some bitterness?????? Harden up Princess!!!!
So yes we got beaten in those GF's but only by 9 points in the first one so I don't think Collywobbles is applicable.
God the worst one I have ever seen was Port Vs Geelong.
How could any team make it to a Grand final and then put on such a appalling display.
I think even Geelong were dissappointed that no one contested the premiership that year.
So yes you can take heart in their effort to get there Yarz.
I just hope they never make the effort again because it was so boring.

here we go, port is now only 12 years old because it suits the argument of inexperience, yet you would be the first one to use the success of the port magpies to back another.

question? are you "the power" "port adelaide" or "the port power magpies"??

Re:Are Collingwood the real deal? Reply to this message
inexperience in finals to begin with, then toppled by the lions at the gabba who we a tad better than us, then with a bit more experience, we won...many left the club and took on jobs elsewhere based on money and better opportunities, the club started to rebuild, exceeded all expectation by making another one in 2007, but where we were truly at back then with the thrashing by geelong. thing is, since 1997, id rather be floating around with some success, consistency and at least something out of a 12 year period rather than sweet FA like collingwood. along with a whole host of other vic clubs, yet you seem to hand out insults to port and other teams frequently on here whilst your own clubs have done nothing really at all. to be beaten by geelong in a grand final to me wasnt anything to be ashamed of. the scoreline may have been embarassing at the time, but the effort of that team in getting there was tremendous.

so what's collingwood's excuse for their lack of success since 1990, and how long was it before that since they won a premiership???
maybe you need to realize you're just a motley bunch of throw togethers, that run out on the park with a big fat cheque book to back you up, and a tard in a gold jacket to show the rest of the AFL fans how to be a complete pillock week in week out!!!!!

true scarps, but the nine hour meeting wasn't just about the coach, i think they wrapped that up in about 5 hours (it does take Port people along time to count 8 votes)

A thread to get some action happening? Pies are not the third best side, they are level with a bunch of teams at the moment but if we win 4 or five of the next 6 we could well be in third spot.

Pies on thier day can beat anyone, and lose to anyone, that is the difference between all sides below 2nd.

Re:Are Collingwood the real deal? Reply to this message
isc Last year we weren't
"quick enough to run away from us, not tall enough to exploit our defensive smalls and not defensively tight enough to keep Buddy and Roughie quiet."
But the hawks aren't the same side as they were last year and that's why I'm hoping for the win.
Not saying I've pencilled it in, but if we are any chance to be there in September we have to do it.

Re:Are Collingwood the real deal? Reply to this message
I'll be at the Pies v Hawks, so I certainly hope you lose that one! :)

I do think the Hawks match up well on Collingwood, they are not quick enough to run away from us, not tall enough to exploit our defensive smalls and not defensively tight enough to keep Buddy and Roughie quiet.

What'll make the difference is the Hawthorn mindset for that one. If we get belted by the Dogs and/or lose to the Roos, we will probably be mentally shot - that'll hand the Pies a comfortable 4 points.

Re:Are Collingwood the real deal? Reply to this message
Well i think that Collingwood's season is completely in their own hands.
The big test will start from Friday night against the Bombers, although I do expect a win. Also I hope we beat blues, now that we have most of our side back, hawks and Lions again too.
The biggest test will be the Doggies and we have them twice.
In Finals anything can happen and hopefully we will be holding a top four spot.

well its now or never for the Dogs - 6 blokes coming to the end of their careers & i still believe the weakest spine in the AFL.

Re:Are Collingwood the real deal? Reply to this message
I would say the Dogs are the 3rd best side and I would hate to play then in the granny - their small fwds are quick b@stards.

The Pies are going nicely, but they do this every year. They are a team that is always there abouts and if things go right for them there is no reason they couldn't push the top 3 sides all the way, but they are a team you look at on paper and think are a threat.
