Onya Matt.
I didn't listen to or watch any game over the past 2 rounds but was happy to hear that we had a win against the Kangas. My sons team 'The Diorites' defeated the Kangas on saturday night (I was there) so I thought that it may have been an omen.
Well done Matt ... good sport and all. |

| As the ladder and finals sort 'emselves out will have to have a saving bet on other results ... Dogs, Pies, Crows all do have claims so it seems. |

| I'm thinking that either the Saints or Cats will miss out on the granny. Which ever team finishes 2nd will have to play the Dogs and they are going pretty well, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a Cats vs Saints prelim. |

if you want to add to Johnson been out include Ottens and D. Johnson. Both teams were missing players that should be there for next time. Maybe it was better for the Saints to be without Hudghton & King, not like either of those guys helped ya last yr when the Cats had pretty comfortable wins both times.
But just pointing out that Stevie J is the Cats most damaging fwd against the Saints, kicking more goals against them then our other fwds. Its like how Riewoldt has a good record against the Cats. Take the Saints most damaging fwd out of their team and how would they go? |

Said weeks ago that the Saints have the game plan to win this one and the major difference between this Saints side and the one who could string together enough wins to make a granny was a fit and firing Michael Gardiner.
Well done Saints, the next time these 2 sides meet I have a suspicion that the result will turn.
18-1 for a Saints v Cats GF ... ahhh, money for jam. |

| doc, totally agree with that. Its nothing against Hawkins but Nathan was developing into a great player. I read so many comments about how it was good he retired, that he was nothing compared with his brother, he was selfish for retiring etc but those people know sh!t. While I don't know the guy, from everything I read Nathan was the better junior player compared with Gary, that his raw talent was fanastic, Nathan was like his dad. Its just a pity that Nathan also had his dads shyness and didn't like the media attention because he would be a great player to have right now. |

There wasn't much that Mooney or Hawkins could do today, the ball movement into the fwd 50 wasn't the best for either of them.
As for their contributions, Mooney as FF in 07 kicked 67 goals that yr, contributing 91 to the Cats, the 3rd most in the league only behind Brown & Pav. Playing out of CHF last yr he kicked 52 goals and contributed 92 goals for the 4th most in the league. His numbers might be down this yr but that is also because others have stood up, you just need to look at the fact he is ave his least number of disposals since 2003 to see he isn't as much of a target as other guys in the side. Johnson has stood up to be our focal fwd this yr, Mooney playing more of a structural role then as a focal point. Byrnes & Chappy have also stood up more then they did last yr.
And as for Hawkins, the kid has played 32 games. Give him a chance to get some experience. Judge him after next season, at that stage he should have had a full preseason under his belt, played a full yr and if he ain't coping then sure he ain't doing enough and it will be time to move on. But he is learning, taking steps with each game and his defensive pressure has improve this yr compared with last yr. |

I wouldnt even worry if i was a cats fan.
If this is the best the saints have got, then they will go many more years without a flag.
Geelong had quite a few out,and while some say geelong got more of the frees, its the frees that werent paid to geelong, but paid to the saints that had me stumped.
Saints wanted to win this match.Geelong it didnt really matter.
A loss is good, and a loss isnt far away for the saints either |

Not too many options to replace Hawkins with though. Bomber wants Lonergan to play as a defender, and if Taylor is out next week then Lonergan may be called upon to take over from Taylor as a tall defender. Brown & Simpson who may have been called upon are both out injured, Brown won't be back this yr and Simpson is out for 5-7 weeks, so a big call to rush him into the side to debut just before finals. Hawkins has played some very good games this yr and will have to play against the Lions next week, when we played them earlier this yr he kicked 3 goals against then, 20 disposals & 9 tackles for his best game. He was also good against Freo & Eagles, maybe the long season is getting to him and he might need a rest before the finals but I do believe he is our best option going forward.
Gazza shaved his head before his hair started falling out, he wanted to get in 1st. I can't remember Chappy ever having hair, Harley looks better with his head shaved then when he had hair and when we get D. Johnson back it should be fun because he looks like Chappy. Don't worry, your not the only one who has trouble telling them apart, so do the cat fans. |

My point is Brat, that Mooney or Hawkins, the main focal points didn't/don't do enough offensively & with a dream midfield they don't convert enough.
Defensively they don't do jack going the other way. They are both ordinary. |

Congratulations St Kilda, a brilliant win !!
Not happy we got beaten but the first quarter had me guessing.
We were shell shocked from the Saints pressure and I have seen it before. We need to find another way to win now, as other teams have caught us, and as I said in another post, Leigh Tudor told The Saints all our secrets lol !!!!!
I`m pretty sure we will be there in the finals with a few new ideas.
Edge of the seat stuff ! |

Hawkins wasn't too bad today, he was at least trying to run down the opposition defenders but isn't as quick as them just yet. And he did get a free kick for a holding the ball decision though. He is a kid in his 3rd season, never had a full preseason due to injuries but people seem to expect that fwds are meant to have an instant impact & if they aren't kicking 4 goals a game they are doing something wrong. Look at his career and you can see he is improving with more experience and he will only get better.
Not sure why people are so harsh on Mooney though. People seem to look at how many goals he kicks and judge him for that, but they fail to look at how many goals he sets up also. Last yr he led the league in goal assists and finished 4th for total goals contributed, what more could you ask for from a guy playing at chf? Today he contributed more goals to the Cats then any other Cats player, 2 goals himself & 2 goal assists. He is doing his job, what more do you want from him?
Our fwd line is our weak point, but I wouldn't say we have no fwd line. You aren't the highest scoring team over the last 3yrs based purely on the midfield, the fwds do have to step in at some stage. Getting the same 6 fwds playing every week would be nice though so we have some good team work running through there, understanding between the guys which is lacking when you lose an important player in that set up. |

| Cons: Geelong don't have a fwd line. Mooney is ordinary & Hawkins ain't up to it YET. Some teams get away with that but the defensive pressure by Hawkins (mainly) & Mooney is non existent. That kills ya these days. Stevie J being out really screws with that as well. |

| 1 last thing which is something for the Cats to take out and the Saints to think about - prior to todays game the Saints hadn't lost a 2nd or 3rd quarter all yr, but the Cats beat them in both of those quarters. And for the Cats, after losing our last 4 of our last 5 last quarters we ran out the match today - so something else to take out of todays game |

The biggest difference between the 2 teams was getting the ball inside 50, the Saints kicked it to the advantage of Riewoldt, Kosi & Gardiner but more often then not we kicked to contests and you aren't going to win too many games doing that.
So we have things to go away and work on. Not sure if Lonergan is the right move to the fwd line in place of Hawkins because he isn't fast enough, and he is really only good on the lead, not in pack situations where he gets out muscled.
Like the Cats vs Hawks game last yr where the Hawks said afterwards that they would be able to beat the Cats come September, I do believe we have what it takes to beat the Saints come September. They played very well today and after that blistering start failed to put us away, something that they should have done. |
