one league 2 conferences 20 teams vic conf. rest of aus conf.-ok why because it is a way to grow the game Iwould like to see aform zoning introduced then unpicked players from teams zone go into national draft alsoreduce the money in the sport and make it mandatory for clubs that their players have a career after football if it,s just all about the buck the average fan will eventually get sick of sport

Sure a SOO may not get everybody lining up but maybe an incentive (remuneration as well as a jumper) may help them ;) ... clubs to get a little something too ???

btw, with a shorter season the good players could afford another game or two ... injuries are the only concern as I see it.

At grass roots level they were doing it (country week/rep week when the rest have a break ... why not conitinue the game as we all were bought up to know.

I like gt's idea. Sure there would still be complaints from some teams but things would even up more then they do now.

Regarding SOO representation, it wouldn't necessarily draw a huge amount on clubs from SA to supple SA players (Cats have something like 7), same with WA.

It would be more about the teams that are going well that year compared with location of the team - Cats could expect 10 players to play SOO if it occured this yr, Mackie, Enright & possible Varcoe for SA, Taylor & Corey for WA and then there is the Vic guys of Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Stevie J, Scarlo, Chappy & Ling.

If a team is going well they would probably be a bit bigger disadvantage then teams not doing so well regardless of location, when SOO teams are selected.

It may end up with each team playing every other team once only making a 19 round comp, with the home ground advantage to alternate every year.
The problem with a 3 week break midseason is the usual problem with rep footy - the teams that supply a large number of rep players would be disadvantaged, and SOO WA and SA would draw on a large number of players from the Perth and Adelaide clubs , putting them at a disadvantage

GT, I would go along with the play each side once draw, except it still wouldn't solve the problem of people complaining about the draw! It will go from WHO we play to WHEN we play them - but that can't be solved.

TV and the AFL coffers won't like removing the second derby, showdown, ESS v COLL clashes either! (and future Bris v GC and Syd v WS fixtures!).

I do love the idea of state footy returning too.

Don't want anything to do with a conference system but don't have answers either.

In my ideal world I'd like to see 2-4 scratch matches (without trophies). During the season propper each team to play the opposition an equal amount of games (once), rotating home and away venues bi-annually. A mid season break of 3 weeks when it is an interstate battle can take place (players like to get a state guernsey) and continue with the final 8 as is today where the higher placed team gets a home ad ... less games means less rigors on individuals thereby allowing for limited rotations (interchanges) during games.

I don't like what I see with regard tough men with endurance get tagged out of the game by being rotated on.

it would make it interesting though cos most clubs would say you need to win 12 games to make the finals but going by the conference it doesn't gurantee it as carlton would miss out with 13 wins so it could make games more competitive

Re:divisions in the AFL comp a real cro ... Reply to this message
obviously based on al.l vic teams being in one conference and interstate in the other.

if you did it this way and then merged the ladder as per results it would work. but as soon as you said top 4 of each conference then

how would you like saints v adelaide, cats v bears, doggies v port and pies v eagles

obviously the issue would be working out how the finals work cos the current system where the team that finishes higher gets the home game whereas this way they finished at the same ranking.

so unless it was a home game for eagles then that game would be a waste and well who knows which of the port teams would turn up!

Therefore the system is much the same as we have now, with teams playing against some teams once and others twice.

In the conference system you play the teams in your conference twice and the teams in the other conference once.

The states have two LEAGUES with three conferences each. The two champions for each LEAGUE play off in the superbowl.

And harry, under the current system, we could see a grand final between 4th and 8th, so there isnt much difference.

The draw is biased enough as it is without throwing in a division or conference system.

I HATE the idea of conferences for one point & one point only.

It's conceivable that the Grand Final COULD be played by 1st v 11th !!!
---
The simple solution to that (almost impossible) scenario is to not have independant finals like the US do, but simply maintain the one ladder.

Under 2 groups of 10 or 4 groups of 5 you would place together clubs based on location.

The benefits would be mor even travel and 2 'derbies' a year each without any compromise to the draw.

But if you did want different ladders per division, 4 groups would be a simple matter of placing the top of each group into the 'top 4' based on record and the 4 2nd placed teams into the 'bottom 4' and going from there.

"In America they also have sellout games to college football in stadiums that hold 100k, the cities will be packed on game day with people in pubs watching the game on tv - there is nothing like it, it is totally nuts, they are fanatics."

Brat, it is due to the massive population they have. My relatives are fanatical and yet never get to attend a match ever. Must be hard on the average joe.

One team in one conference MAY not be better than the team that finishes last in the other.

Who wants to see that??
