It is the Swans best interest that the new West Sydney Club be a success, if it is not then footy will not be a winner in Sydney. NOT GOOD, that will take the gloss off the Swans as well as the game itself in the eyes of Sydneyites.
I think ALL clubs should have input into the registration of the new clubs/franchises ... they've got to get it right or it will be detrimental to the National Game. |

So, rbownoz, It's ok for Jeff Kennett to make a suggestion to the AFL, but not Eddie Maguire.....

After the debacle where the AFL attempted to push an uncooperative Kangaroos unit kicking and screaming to the Gold Coast, the AFL has lost a lot of credibility on the Coast
Currently, the NRL Titans are just absolutely smashing the AFL in media coverage and franchise sales on the GC.
It is symbolic that a local supporter turned off the lights at Carrara during the WC v Kangaroos the other night.
The only option for a team on the GC is a new franchise - any effort to relocate another reluctant Victorian team will be treated with the mixture of disinterest or disdain it deserves |

| maybe they could revisit the Melbourne-Hawthorn merger but instead of it being predominately Melbourne like it was last time it could become dominately Hawthorn since they are stronger on and off field .. really give it to those Dees! |

| Still, it isn't Jeff's place to suggest other clubs do anything. He is president of HAWTHORN, therefore the Dees situation is not Jeff's to comment on. He is turing into Eddie! |

collingwood led by mick and eddie come up with ideas all the time yet most of the time they just look like clowns having a whinge with little btw to back up the arguement
with jeff kennett and hawthorn at least the move to the gold coast has credability to melbourne's needs |

I've got no problems with any suggestion that 10 Victorian teams cannot survive. I hate the fact that many people are ready and willing to cast off a side they don't support, yet those same people would never suggest THEIR team merges, folds or relocates!
I think the best move would be to offer the Dees the same package the AFL offered North. Then the MEMBERS of Melbourne can say yes or no.
Unfortunately the Dees fans have learnt NOTHING from the merger talks in 1996. Since then the Hawks have done everything to survive and are now here to stay. The Dees have continued to struggle.
I can't see Tassie as a realistic option for them though. |

Demons will become the Tasmanian Demons/Devils
The GC 17 team will struggle and merge with a Victorian team in about ten years time |

| What's the prize?Kennett's suggestion is not so stupid. North , Melbourne and the Bulldogs will struggle in coming years to remain competitive due to money. People have short memories. South supporters wanted the Swans to stay in Melbourne in 1982 but accepted the 2005 premiership. Fitzroy supporters didn't want to merge but accepted 3 straight premierships (2001-2003) that would never have been achieved if they stayed as Fitzroy. The city of Melbourne cannot support 10 teams and GC17 will be a repeat of the Bears. You'll probably give me the dumbest post of the year award but we'll wait and see who is right. |

| The AFL don't want long winning streaks. The way they dismantled one of the greatest teams of ALL time (Essendon 2000) with salary caps etc is proof of that. I am not a Geelong supporter but I hope they grind out premiership after premiership. |
