Hey, I said "NOMINATED", don't get too far ahead of yourself :)

... but you have got those good ethics when it comes to teams, your wallet (which makes them strong) and sharing it around. Good on you nye.

Oh wow, should I prepare a few words of acceptance? I might recite a poem like Rusty!

"God bless America, God save the Queen, God defend New Zealand, THANK CHRIST FOR AUSTRALIA!"

Or should I just cry?

C'mon chucker, footy goes for 2 hours, why do people need to eat? Plus you can always bring in your own drinks and snacks if you HAVE to.

You hit the nail on the head though - "The EASY option is subscribe to Foxtel". You can't expect to take the easy option and still see the greatest benefits.

I can't get to AFL or NRL matches very often due to my location, yet I contribute a lot of money to the survival of the Hawks and Melbourne Storm every year - I can't really afford it, but I want to do it. Besides, a lot of people would spend more on things like ciggies, booze and take away etc a year than the $500 or so I divide between my clubs.

I think it was Cameron Ling... he streaked for 4.3km through Geelong when they won last year.

Where are these supporters now?

the issue for a lot of supporters is the cost of attending footy matches. Family of four or more to go the footy , with drinks and food is exorbitant.

The easy option is subscribe to Foxtel/Austar, watch all sports all weekend, drink your own beer and food. Money goes to media who then bid for the sports, and clubs have to wait on handouts, or attract their own sponsorship.

Gardner released a statement this morning distancing his club from Kennett’s comments.

“Let me assure you that the views of the Tasmanian Hawks’ President, Jeff Kennett, are purely his own. They do not reflect the views of the Melbourne Board, the Melbourne Football Club, the AFL or, in fact, any other chairman or president that I have spoken to,” the statement read.

Kinger, the confusion for people is that they are not exactly members of the footy club.

Southport Sharks is a footy team, function centre, bar, bottleshop, gym, entertainment centre, restaurant etc. By joining the club you get discounts on all of these facilities (and many other places).

What would need to happen is the Gold Coast side could have the Sharks function centre as a sponsor - that would guarantee them consistent dollars. But the memberships to the facility have nothing at all to do with footy!

Maybe the Gold Coast Sharks AFL side could use Southport Sharks as a reserves side, train at their oval and utilise the function centre for official purposes - that could work.

Souths, like the Dees, have been their own worst enemy. The Rabbitohs had 100,000 'fans' march the streets to protest the side being kicked out of the NRL. Funny thing is though, the side didn't get crowds BEFORE they were kicked out, and are now struggling AFTER being let back in! Where are these supporters now?

Fans must support the club by going to games and buying memberships. If they don't they just might wake up and discover they have no club anymore!

The last thing the AFL needs is to lose a club like Melbourne - but they may not have a choice if the fans don't do something about it!

Good for you dees if only there were more supporters like you. People forget its not that long ago that the Dees were considered a premiership threat but never struck whilst the iron was hot and now many of their star players from that time are preparing for the departure lounge. I dont think the the AFL would fall for a guy like Murdoch who was virtually the death knell for South Sydney, even the few star players they had were never made to return to Souths on their return to the NRL by the way Souths are still the most successfull club in the history of the premier grade rugby league in Australia.

NRL tried to jettison South Sydney - look what happened. As for the Dees, tradition means alot to many people. If the AFL are going to get rid of the oldest club and convert the comp. to one which simply has to make money, well they can shove it up their Ar$e as far as i'm concerned. Meanwhile, I'll continue to support my club thru good times & bad and ignore the so called wisdom of "has been" politicians.

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
The difference is the 40 or 50 thousand membersthey have don't pay this money to be part of a footy club!

Sure, they have about $35,000,000 and will be able to support themselves for the first couple of years, but there is NO WAY all of their current members will sign up every year. Most are members for the cheap feed - my grandparents are members FFS, they couldn't give a rats about the footy side!

I'd like Southport to involve themselves in the side (maybe act as the reserves side in the local comp). Maybe the Sharks can be a financial partner also. But I wouldn't give them the licence.

The Southport Sharks have 40000 memebers i believe and the financial capacity to compete with the heavyweights. They have been trying to get a licence since 1996 and i dont think they give a toss that the rest of the Gold Coast wont support them.

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
Or it could be a warning to the AFL that the Sydney public don't flock to sporting events like the rest of the country!

The only draw back with calling the Gold Coast side 'SOuthport Sharks' is that many on the Gold Coast don't support the Sharks in the QAFL, so it is doubtful these people would do so in the AFL. Many of the Sharks members are pensioners who join the leagues club to play pokies and enjoy $4 steak!

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
The GC17 team will only survive as Southport Sharks and nothing else. Ready made members and support and more money than half of the Melbourne clubs.

Theres talk in NRL circles of a loss or merger of some of the teams there. This may be good for the AFLs West Sydney team as they might be able to collect some disgruntled League supporters.

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
Correct nye, Melbourne have a brand that would sell, they have tradition that many like to believe in and follow, all they need is for a change of tact/approach at the clubs highest levels, one that brings them into the 21st century.

You won't change Browny's mind, you won't get him to budge even though what you say has so much merit and should be reasonably welcomed. If it ain't the Hawks, it ain't cool in his eyes.

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
If Hawthorn can turn their fortunes around browny, why don't you think the Dees ever will? All it takes is one strong leader and a board with balls. Make a few tough decisions and look outside traditional thinking to generate income for the club.

Why couldn't the Dees upgrade their image, use their history as an advantage and get the apathetic fans back to the games and on the membership books.

It is doable, but we need less negativity surrounding our clubs and more positive thinking.

Good call nye, it's not always ALL ABOUT MONEY, there is some very deep traditions and history involved here ... we all need to be a little sympathetic, help the Dees out and look forward to them partaking in the comp for many years to come.

Re:Longest possible winning streak??? Reply to this message
I'm sorry, but there is one thing we should seriously consider when talking about the Dees. They are the oldest football club in the world - any code! Surely this gives them some form of immunity when it comes to mergers and the like. A relocation is fine as the club remains the same club, the history will go with them, but a merger would result in the end of a slice of history.
