Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
Whilst on the subject of (alleged) misdemeanours.......

"A FORMER Australian Rules star has pleaded not guilty over a conspiracy to defraud a university of more than $10 million.

David Dench, the captain of North Melbourne's 1977 VFL premiership team, appeared in the Victorian County Court today.

Police allege the fraud involved senior employees at Victoria University and contractors invoicing the university for millions of dollars of work such as maintenance that was never carried out.

They allege that Dench's maintenance company invoiced the university for $4.7 million of maintenance work which was not done.

The court was told fictitious invoices were made out for work that was neither requested nor undertaken.

The hearing continues." The Oz 28//4/08

I believe DD was quite some FB in his day.

Chip Le Grand, The OZ, 7/5/08

"Carey will inevitably be inducted into the Hall of Fame on the basis of his playing record and ability, just as Gary Ablett was three years ago. Only it will be done at a time when Carey can gratefully accept his honour and football can freely celebrate perhaps the greatest player the game has seen."

In a few years, all will be forgotten......

I don't care if it doesn't happen for 20 years! I just think it would be a shame if it NEVER happened.

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
That's true nye but I think it all comes down to timing aswell. Atleast let the stories about these players die down before inducting them.

It's no gonna hurt anyone to wait a few years, is it?

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
I agree too. It is the 'Hall of Fame', not the 'Hall of Top Blokes'. Anyone who plays these days has every little problem they have documented. In the past much of this was either not noticed, or was put down to 'larrikinism'.

I remember a story that the late, great EJ Whittan once called the toss before a game. As soon as it hit the deck he scooped up the coin and pointed in the direction he wanted to run - nobody, umpire included, ever saw if it was heads or tails. Nobody questioned him, but what he did was cheating - and I know of many, many other similar stories about the guy. Yet HE is not only a hall of famer, but is highly respected. Would be different these days.

Agreed Pies

Does the Lethal king hit on Bruns mean that he lacks the "character" to be in the Hall of Fame ??? No
Carey will make the hall of fame for sure
Just a matter of timing

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
I think the argument has lost its way here.
Anything Tuddy did was so long ago it wouldn't even stand as a prior now and Fitz is just stirring the pot to raise it anyway.
But it does raise the age old question of, "should Morality be part of the criteria for the FOOTBALL hall of fame?".

In my opinion it shouldn't. To ahve a football hall of fame without Gary Ablett and wayne Carey is a joke. It cheapens the stature for other players who have been installed.

It should be for the greatest footballers of all time as judged on their football ability. Who knows what indescrections were committed by earlier players before they were under such fierce media scrutiny.

I am not making any comment or assertions about Ablett and Carey other than to say that based on football ability they have to one day be inducted.

Tuddenham stole some soft drink (big whoop), he only harmed himself, did anyone receive any injuries from what he did?

definitely "alledged" - he did not admit to hitting a woman.
Careful what you say - Wayne would be more than within his rights to hunt you down and sue you for deformation.

Have you watched those illegally obtained DVD's about alledged events in Melbourne yet.
They are crime figures.
You broke more laws than Tuddy before you reached your teens.

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
not " alleged" - Carey confessed to the incident on national TV if my memory serves me correctly

And, if Gary Ablett makes the Hall of Fame, then joyriding a truck load of lemonade hardly makes Des a candidate for the next series of Underbelly.

"alledged" woman basher...he is innocent until he is proven guilty.
And the girlfriend has not lodged any claims - infact she completely denies he did anything...but all this doesn't answer my question how does a Melbourne Crime figure in Des Tuddenham become eligible

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
Agree or disagree with it - but 'good character' is currently part of the criteria and should be respected.
So how did a convicted criminal, a thief, get nominated and yet Carey, who has only really harmed himself - not get nominated?
---

Fitz are you completely nuts? Do you not seeing assualting one's own GF as not hurting someone else???? Carey is a thug & was deservedly left out! The hall of fame isn't just about football skills, these men are admired by up & coming footballers, a woman basher should NOT be admired.

Re:Hall of Fame Reply to this message
Speaking of Des...this is the absolute truth about his last day at Essendon. It came about at Training, when Des, as Captain Coach, decided that the Bombers had played like dogs - so he would treat them like dogs.

This is true - he made the Bomber players crawl the boundary line at Windy Hill and bark and growl like dogs. They did it but Essendon players Jeff Prior and Don McKenzie were disgusted and took their thoughts to the Club and had Des sacked as coach. Des finished that night.

Whilst I'm on Essendon - Geoff Blethyn - the four eyed full forward...had a trick. When the play was up the other end, he used to position himself behind the full back. He would catch the sun in the lens of his spectacles and use it to burn the leg of his opponent.

The supporters behind the goals were on to it and used to howell with laughter as the Full Back would suddenly shiek in pain and hop about...Bethyn would be a safe 3 meters away innocently shrugging his shoulders.

<Carey, who has only really harmed himself >

Fitz, smashing a glass into your girlfriend's face is not self mutilation.
I think Carey was not inducted into the Hall of Fame because he has criminal charges pending. I would say once all charges are dealt with, and the media storm blows over, Carey will get his induction prob 2011
