I've stated previously, my best Origin moment - 1990, Nth Hobart Oval. TASMANIA def VICTORIA!
I also remember the numerous changes of 'origin' with Dunstall, Daniher, Febey, Longmire and many others pulling on the Big V as well as their ACTUAL origin states jersey. |

luap - from wikipedia or as ammmatt calls it memory
"After signing a reserves contract and featuring in six reserves games, Ablett headed back to Drouin, before returning to Hawthorn in 1981 to play senior football for the club. However, after an uneventful 6 appearances for the Hawks, Ablett cited an inability to truly settle down in the city as an underlining factor in his decision to leave the club and head to the country town of Myrtleford.[1] It wasn't long, however, before Ablett's footballing ability came on notice again, this time to the Geelong Football Club and their long-time recruiting officer Bill McMaster, who convinced Ablett to give the game another shot, albeit this time in the confines of the country-based city of Geelong. After several unsuccessful appeals by Hawthorn, Ablett finally completed a $60,000 transfer to Geelong.[1]

| He had played 15 prior to his 1st SoO match. 6 for Hawthorn in 1982, and then 9 for Geelong where he played on the wing. And as mentioned he played half-forward flank - kinda like the reverse of Richardson and a few yrs earlier in the career. |

Kiwi,
The #1 moment was WA's insistence on the SoO concept for representative footy & the #1 game is, was, & always will be ...... numero uno !!!!
League was quick to follow driven by a similar sentiment in Qld to that in WA.
SA - like their entry into the AFL, a few years behind .... |

Geesh some people are bitter - if you aren't interested in the SoO then why read a thread about it and post comments.
The players want it back and there are many fans who do also - Scarlett and Waite if selected become the 1st 2nd generation Big V players - their fathers played 1 match each and it happened to be along side each other in the backline 1971 vs SA at the MCG. That is something special that those 2 players will share for the rest of their careers, and why should some bitter people deny the current playing group and future generations from also playing rep football. |

6. South Australia’s dominance of the State of Origin spanned over a few years in the 80s but it will be the first game of Stephen Kernahan in 1984, who at the time was playing for Glenelg, that will be remembered for the 10 goals he kicked as a 21 year old. Since his arrival onto the scene in the 1984 football park game, the name Kernahan would have Carlton supporters drooling until his debut in 1986.
7. State of Origin has had plenty of niggle and push and shove over the years, but who will ever forget the punch up between Brereton and Lester-Smith. The 1985 scuffle will be famously remembered not just for the fight, but the fact the two were team mates.
8. Arguably the greatest State of Origin game of them all, it was Gary Buckenara in 1986 who will be remembered for kicking his fifth goal, a snap shot that won the game for WA by three points.
9. On 25 June 1977, Western Australia were comprehensively being beaten by a VFL team, but a 157 point turn around in October 1977 occurred when WA defeated Victoria in the first official state of origin game.
10. After speculation Victoria had not taken the first state of origin game seriously, the Big V were keen to silence their critics and did so in 1978 when the Big V smashed WA by around 100 points in the second state of origin match in history. |

1. In 1995 there was not a dry eye at the MCG and grown men were reduced to tears the day Ted Whitten was driven around the home of football for the final time. To the song ‘Heroes’, Ted and his son will be remembered for one of the most emotional moments in the state of origin history.
2. In 1989 it was a classic game at the MCG. In previous years South Australia had dominated the Big V, but in a game where 10,000 people were turned away, a crowd of 91,960 will remember Lockett and Dunstall playing in the same forward line, a line up so strong that five time premiership player Dermott Brereton started on the bench. The game will also be remembered as the game Hall did his knee in a fierce tackle by his teammate, Andy Collins.
3. Remembered as one of the most inspirational rev ups recorded on TV, in 1988 Ted Whitten shared some passionate words with in an interview as the teams headed into the halftime break. Some recall hearing the screams coming from the Cheltenham home of Allan ‘Yabby’ Jeans as Whitten declared Rocket Eade had busted his shoulder and busted his ribs but would still fight on. The passion from Whitten later proved to be a slight exaggeration but proved inspirational nevertheless.
4. One of the proudest moments the parents of the Danihers would probably recall as their four sons, Neale, Tony, Terry and Chris took to the field for the NSW versus Victoria state of origin match. A game that NSW upset Victoria ending up winners by ten points.
5. He was a super star and could kick bags at full forward or on the wing. In 1984 the arrival of Gary Ablett to the Big V team was a significant one as he snagged a lazy eight goals from the half forward flank. He also collected the best on field honours. A controversial selection in his first season confirmed he was a player and would remain as one of the best ever. |
