| I have no problem with you saying you rate some players higher than carey but to say he was overrated is ludicrous. |

Rand,
No one would disagree that he was a fantastic player, the dominant player of his time. But there were players before him that I personally rate higher.
Matter of fact I think the 'greatest' tag is nonsensical at any rate. Footy is a team game and there are alot of different roles on the field. No one player could ever be 'great' at all of them. |

Im starting to agree with some of the other posters about Carey.
He was so overrated that he only made the AA team 7 times and was only named Captain of the AA team 4 times. The first time when he was 22 yo. Not to mention kicking over 700 goals from CHF and winning countless games of his own boot.
You only have to look at the 1994 final series to realise how overrated Carey was. the bloke only trained for about 20 minutes because of a leg injury yet somehow managed to get 2 BOG's and kick 10 goals in 2 games. |

Reasonably fair comment there Fitz, especially if you were to refer to it as the VFL pre-1990.
Teams like Carlton, Collingwood, hmmmmm, at a guess, Essendon, Richmond, please add any others as it pleases you were certainly doing alright, but a fair few were beginning to suffer because of the chequebook nature of the game, I believe your beloved Fitzroy and also South Melbourne were in all kinds of strife.
Hey if I'm wrong I'm wrong and perhaps should go back to the books.
In the WAFL we were suffering because of the player drain eastward, we had money but not enough to compete with the VFL clubs, and the fact that the local main-stream media pulled out and stopped supporting the local game. |

| 1989- The V.F.L have been encouraging Victorian Clubs to merge. 1990- The V.F.L. Victorian Football League is changed to the AFL Australian Football League. |

Where's the bankruptcy come from? There were sides in financial strife but that's not the AFL.
I actually know what teh AFL's financial position was from 85 onwards as I looked after their accounts.
So let me set the story straight - the AFL was cashed up and able to expand...teh WAFL & SANFL were never going to be more than feeders. No malice in saying so - it's just a fact. |

Kay Fitz,
Here's how this Sangroper sees it.
There were moves to create an Aus-wide comp for a while (late 70's) VFL having more people and therefore more money could pretty much buy what they wanted from wherever and dictated terms to everyone else. WA or at least a couple of clubs wanted 'in' with the VFL, to remain relevant I guess (our comp was slowly dying), SA were more apt to keep going it alone (until sold out by PA).
Despite having more of everything the VFL soon found itself bankrupt, or at least close to it.
On a larger scale than that, those in the know realised that the sport as a whole needed to expand and go 'National' to survive as a professional sport.
So in short.....we all kind of saved eachothers bacon. It's what we all had to do. |

| if you think the vics are so good fitz then why did it take fromm 2000 to 2007 for a vic based club to win a flag and also if your so good and a force of ten clubs in vic, since afl was born in 1990 vic based clubs have 8 flags non vic clubs have 10--please explain |

well we half agree then.
It is infact SoO - Nick Reiwoldt cant play for Victoria - because the SoO rules force him to play for the Mickey Mouse Mob...the fact that other than a Vic side there's no way you could put a sole WA or SA side on the paddock just shows how strong Victorian football is.
Some would say that we could give back the the SANFL or WAFL to their respective states. |

| its not a SoS game--its a 150 years of footy celebration game , something for the AFL to get excited about, but the care factor throughout the land isnt that great fitz--has nothing to do with rivalry |

attacking me doesn't create a rivalry.
This SoO or All Stars Team is very indulgent...to keep WA, SA, Tas & Qld happy - about a million people - Victoria have to put our finest A grade cattle out at risk of damage. All so that Croweaters can get drunk in their loungerooms drinking Westend urine and cheering on a side they couldn't even fill out in their own right.
Gotta kill this off for good. It is an embarrassment. |
