SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
Dear friends,

Staggering new estimates suggest that 100,000 people may have died in Burma's terrible cyclone. Incredibly, the corrupt and brutal Burmese government has stopped most international aid at the borders and is impeding the relief effort.

In under 24 hours, Avaaz members have donated over 690,000 Euros (over US$1 million – more than many governments!) to help Burma's monks provide the emergency relief, through their own networks and monasteries, that the government will not. Scroll down to see the email sent yesterday with all the details of how we can help, or click below to help us get over 1 million Euros (US$1.54m) today:

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
In the wake of a massive cyclone, a shocking 100,000 Burmese may be dead. More are missing. A million are homeless.

But what's happening in Burma is not just a natural disaster--it's also a catastrophe of bad leadership.

Burma's brutal and corrupt military junta failed to warn the people, failed to evacuate any areas, and suppressed freedom of communication so that Burmese people didn't know the storm was coming when the rest of the world did. Now the government is failing to respond to the disaster and obstructing international aid organizations.

Humanitarian relief is urgently needed, but Burma's government could easily delay, divert or misuse any aid. Yesterday the International Burmese Monks Organization, including many leaders of the democracy protests last fall, launched a new effort to provide relief through Burma's powerful grass roots network of monasteries--the most trusted institutions in the country and currently the only source of housing and support in many devastated communities. Click below to help the Burmese people with a donation and see a video appeal to Avaaz from a leader of the monks:

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
HOW TO HELP BURMA
Giving to the monks is a smart, fast way to get aid directly to Burma's people. Governments and international aid organizations are important, but face challenges--they may not be allowed into Burma, or they may be forced to provide aid according to the junta's rules.
And most will have to spend large amounts of money just setting up operations in the country. The monks are already on the front lines of the aid effort--housing, feeding, and supporting the victims of the cyclone since the day it struck. The International Burmese Monks Organization will send money directly to each monastery through their own networks, bypassing regime controls.

Last year, more than 800,000 of us around the world stood with the Burmese people as they rose up against the military dictatorship. The government lost no time then in dispatching its armies to ruthlessly crush the non-violent democracy movement--but now, as tens of thousands die, the junta's response is slow and threatens to divert precious aid into the corrupt regime's pockets.

The monks are unlikely to receive aid from governments or large humanitarian organizations, but they have a stronger presence and trust among the Burmese people than both. If we all chip in a little bit, we can help them to make a big difference. Click here to donate:

With hope,

Ricken, Ben, Graziela, Paul, Iain, Veronique, Pascal, Galit and the whole team

Just to let everyone know that the first batch of aid (foods etc) has arrived at Burma from China and has been received by people. China has already offered a huge amount of financial support including 1 million US$ and 30 million Chinese dollars from the central government and many more from many private organizations.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
China aids Burma? Who the Military or the people? Sorry I do not trust China any more than their 'support' in Zimbabwe or Sudan. The Military would be in a frenzy now to protect its drug crops more than aid to the people on the ground. As for China well...they do not care for human rights there anyway.
"Mohan Malik is a specialist on China's Asian relations at the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii. He says Chinese support is crucial to Burma's military rulers: "The military government remains heavily dependent on China for economic, military, and diplomatic support. China has a veto in the UN Security Council. So, the military junta in Rangoon counts on Beijing to bail it out in case the UN Security Council decides to take some action against Burma.""

The United Nations (UN) has confirmed that Burma has established itself as the world's second biggest producer of opium, the base drug that heroin is made from.

The biggest is Afgnstn

The UN says cultivation in Burma has risen by nearly 30 per cent this year.

But the UN says that Burma is now pumping out more methamphetamine as well, which generates greater profits.

Aid relief may infringe on the Juntas drug dealing..perhaps one reason they are slow in the Aid allowance. Cover their crimes amongst others.

Thats great justfromWA
Unfortunately it's a pity China gave the $1million to the government when all the aid agecies pleaded not to give the money to the illegal military government because they and the UN do not trust the military to spend it on their people. They have mispent foreign aid on arms before.
China needs to exert it influence now to stop the Junta from not accepting humanitarian aid.there are thousands of people just waiting to come and help with rebuilding as was done in Indonesia,Sri Lanka and Thailand after the tsunami.
Only China & Thailand can do this because of trade.
With Great wealth comes great responsibility.
Lets hope the Chinese government use this for the good of the Burmese people.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
It has been a week since a devastating cyclone hit Burma. People are dying while political discussions happen. What is the UN for if they cannot act in a manner that will save thousands of lives? What needs to be discussed ... NOTHING... people are dying, they are starving and the human right to exist is being held in the hands of politicians. ENOUGH! Action is required without any more delay.
This is why the UN exists to stand up for those who cannot stand for themselves, or they are useless. If this starts a war then so be it, lives are worth fighting for! Why does the world stand by and talk? More has happened for less in many wars that have begun in the past, now we have a very serious issue of 'neglect' and all they want to do is talk. What hold does Burma have on the financial side of things that is making the world tread so carefully?

For all those who have died and will die due to Burma's politicians and UN's stand off manner, I really hope what goes around comes around.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
I recently spoke to another human rights lawyer who is working on a theory that proposes to introduce new laws
to international law....goes something along the lines that Regimes or Dicatorships that result in severe human rights abuses and deaths of their own citizens will AUTOMATICALLY lose any rights to the rule that country .....and international agencies like UN will be able to legally step in without being told it is a sovereign issue.Human rights will take president over politics.
still early stages but written for international law.

Would have been useful if applied to places like Burma and Zimbabwe.
Things as they stand are obviously not enough.

China has urged the international community not to politicize the issue of aid to Burma. Aid should be provided immediately without adding any political conditions/aims.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
WA Maybe you should have a close look at why China is saying this.
The Burmese Tatmadaw head an illegally constituted regime; the 1988 elections were ignored by the military who seized power and have ruled illegally and incompetently ever since, imprisoning the elected leadership and murdering dissenters.
China supports this illegal rule.
China and Thailand benefit from this illegal regime
because the get to have Burmas oil and gas in exchange the military get $$$$$$$$ from China. While the Burmese people suffer.Burma was once one of the wealthiest countries in asia now look at it and how the Burmese people live.
The only ones benefitting from trade are the military not the Burmese people.Thousands are starving and have fled the country.......you should read a bit of History.

Why do you think China doesn't want to get involved as far as putting pressure on the Junta.....they don't want to loose their cozy deal whth the illegal military regime when the dust settles.
Meanwhile millions of Burmese have suffered under this illegal regime.
China just went and gave the military $1 milion dollars when EVERYONE KNOWS this was the wrong thing to do.They should have rather given it to the humanitarian groups in Burma...at least we would know where the money was spent.

It would be like China giving millions to Robert Magabe and his army instaed of the people of Zimbabwe.

Its just tooo convient for China to say don't bring politics into it.
Other countries can say this but China has a responsibilty because none of this would have happened if The Junta were not running the country and supported by China.
The Junta who only care about themselves did not even bother to warn the Burmese people evn though they KNEW there was a storm coming.

Lets hope something good will come out of this terrible tradgedy and maybe the Burmese people will be able to rebuild their country .China has to accept that the scale of the situation was avoidable if the military power they support was not running Burma into the ground.

The second batch of aid (60 tons, including foods, mediciens etc) from China has arrived at Burma, and the 3rd batch of aid is on the way to Burma.

Now it is not the right time to debate political issues, but the time for urging aid to Burma. International community should act as China to provide immediate aid.

BURmese military regime have politised the aid.
China is complicit in the man made humanatarian disaster that is taking place because they refuse to jeopardise their Trade relationship with Burma.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
China should rethink its policy of supporting the Burmese military government, especially in light of the recent arms shipments, say Burma observers.

When it comes to arms sales, China definitely supports the Burmese junta despite the unstable situation in Burma, said Aung Kyaw Zaw, a Burmese analyst on the China-Burma border. He said that more than 1,500 armed trucks from China were imported to Burma in 2006.

For China, they pay for arms shipment to Burma in order to get natural gas back from the junta,” said Win Min. “They have great business interests in Burma, such as gas pipelines and dam projects. That’s why they are selling it [the arms shipment] to Burma.”

Recently, China National Petroleum Corp, the biggest oil and gas producer in China, signed an agreement with the southwestern province of Yunnan to cooperate in oil refining, a step toward building a pipeline to neighboring Burma.

Analysts estimate that the role of the Chinese government is significant in applying pressure on the Burmese military regime to initiate political dialogue toward democratic reform in Burma, as well as China not applying its veto on the Burma agenda at the UN Security Council.

“China should put more pressure on the junta,” said Win Min.

Burma holds referendum despite cyclone
The military rulers of Burma went ahead with a constitutional referendum despite calls from the outside world to postpone it after the devastation of Cyclone Nargis.

State-run TV news repeated broadcasts urging people to vote, making no mention of the estimated 1.5 million victims of the cyclone without food and shelter or tens of thousands killed and missing in the vicious storm that struck a week ago.

"Those who value the national well-being should go and vote 'yes'," MRTV said in a scrolling headline on the screen.

There is even more cynicism after the government's struggle to respond to the disaster about the generals' attempt to proceed with its "roadmap to democracy" meant to culminate in multi-party elections in 2010.

Re:SUPPORT BURMA Reply to this message
My heart aches for the Burmese people - decades of military dictatorship and now dying, homeless, sick, injured as a result of cyclone Nargis!

What the junta are doing right now is "genocide" and if the coalition of the willing happily invaded Iraq on the premise of overthrowing a dictator ie. Hussein - then there is NO REASON not to invade Burma and overthrow these mongrels once and for all.

Time for the junta to be facing war crimes charges at the Hague! And I stupidly thought they had no oil there - but a friend of mine educated me and told me they have bucketloads of it and that is the reason why China SUPPORTS the Junta!!!

I am sorry - but China should be stripped of the Olympics for 5 valid reasons;- human rights abuses, Invasion of Tibet, support of Zimbabwe dictators, support of Darfur dictactors and now support of Burma dictators!!!

And don't get me started on the US and Bush. They have no right to preach the high road after Iraq and Hurricane Katrina!!!

EVERY COUNTRY that has a Burmese Embassy must immediately close them down and deport the ambassadors back to Burma!

Once these bureacrats get a taste of the devastation of their country - then they may stop being so evil and allow international aid to enter!!! And China - get off your freaking backsides and start helping them out too!

And any pro-China supporter reading this - tough titties!

The world sat back and allowed Hitler, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Darfur, Zimbabwe, Romania and now Burma to commit genocide.

When will we ever bluddy learn!

Pathetic!
