God I hate how you get absolute wan kers in the travel section. I enjoy this part of the forum but am absolutely sick to death of tw ats.
I am going to the south island in November. I am going with hubby, my son who is 2 and I will be 7 months pregnant but want to holiday before the baby comes.
I was on the North Island about 11 years ago but have never been to the South. I only have 7 nights there but have pretty much decided 1 night Christchurch, then the Tranzalpine Railway, 1 night Franz Joseph, 3 nights Queenstown, then back up to Christchurch for 1 night with a stop half way. No time for Dunedin which is a shame.
I am really looking foward to it. Someone said that Milford Dound is a must. I am pretty sure there are day trips from Queenstown which I may look into. Is it best to prebook??? |

caesar, you can book Milford Sound trips from Queenstown, but it ends up being quite a long day. If you get the chance, it's far better to stay in Te Anau (the closest town to the National Park) and travel to the sound from there. I think it takes a little less than half the time that a trip from Queenstown does.
Te Anau is an expensive tourist trap in exactly the same vein as Queenstown, but far prettier. It's surrounded by mountains and Lake Te Anau.
Either way, most Milford Sound cruises tend to book out during the warmer months, so make sure you book early. And take warm clothes. I was there in early January (so yo'd expect it to be warm) and it snowed!
Take plenty of wet weather gear as well, because it's very likely that on the day you travel to the sound, it will rain. |

| Bit of a bummer that you're training it cesar, hire car would a been a better option, then drive down the west coas road to Greymouth/ Hokitika - incredible views off the coast. While you're there though, see if the wild foods festival is on and try some of the local delicacies. |

Ceasar, I'm thinkning the car would be better simply due to the fact that the trip would be decided by you and not the train. You can stop where you want, leave when you want and see what you want. Fly - drive packages are actually quite cheap over there and you can get one which suits you. Word of caution though. If you want to cut through the alps, go through the tunnel and not over the pass, as that road, although quite a beautiful drive, is quite slippery at this time of year and it will also cut hours off your driving time between destinations. Enjoy the trip. |

| You might be able to get INTO NZ FROM Oz without a passport, but you won't get FROM NZ INTO Oz without a passport. |
