Animal safety at airports Reply to this message
We recently sent our dog from Melbourne to Perth by air. Apparently there are no secure transfer areas and dogs are removed from hire crates in the car park! Our loved pet took fright when a plane flew low overhead, and charged out the crate door before we could leash him and ran away, was missing for 3 days and was also hit by a car. He also ran onto the runway, which could have resulted in a catastrophe for a plane. He died 2 days after we found him, despite receiving vet care. I have heard this is not an uncommon occurrence. I would like to hear from anyone with a similar experience as I am determined airlines take responsibility for the safe transfer of animals to their owners. It would not cost much to install a caged area where we can take control of our pets.

So sorry for your loss. Most pets don't do well in travel.

I had a cat that got loose at an airport but they found her.

On occasion when I moved apartments, one of my cats hated the move and freaked out. He ran out the front door and was never seen again.

Who opens a pet container at the airport ?

The animal should be put in a cage when it leaves home and arrives at its destination
And vice-versa

Buzz: thats what I thought.. its not in the airlines best interest to even open the container because they do not know the tempriment on the dog...

Also shouldnt you padlock the cage shut during travel incase the door does fly open?
