Travel, money and savings. Reply to this message
I really want to travel...and travel not as I have done i.e. shopping, relative comfort etc, but I want to travel to learn. Learn about places, life, people and, perhaps most importantly, me (however, pretentious that might be).

The problem is that, every time I take one step forward, I take two back regarding. I'm not poor by any standard (though I only work part time while at university), and could easily afford to spend a good deal of time away from home, living in relative comfort. However, doing this would leave me little in the way of future financial security. I don't want to live my life around money, but one must be realistic. Soon enough, when I'm on my own, I'll need to pay for myself to live - and I'm not overly confident in my ability to find employment (at least not easily).

So the question, to those of you who have traveled and are here today, settled or not. Did you at all find yourself with little or no money? How have you coped with, or handled this issue?

-jay

While travelling, Ive run short a whole bunch of times. Usually while waiting for cheques to clear, or if I underestimated the cost of something, or even by just turning up to a place with no banks or ATM's and no cash.

Basically, it just means I have to lower my standards even further than they already are. Sleep in a dorm instead of a private room, catch a third class bus instead of first class one, eat cheap food at the bus station/market rather than a restaraunt, and if all that still fails: Cut down on my alcohol budget.

The thing is, for me, airfares are the huge killer. After the airfare I can live for a week quite ok, on the same amount I would spend in one night at the pub back home.

Ive found, that unless you're travelling in Europe, America/Canada and the developed Asian nations, you can easily travel for a few weeks on what you'd spend on a one week trip to a resort on the coast or something similar.

Was just reading of somewhere in Brazil where it was a 2 hour trip, across varying landscape/river, to get to an ATM. Obviously it was well away from the city.

What I meant though, was do you find yourself short of money after you've returned (despite the obvious).

Re:Travel, money and savings. Reply to this message
Oh. Not really. Like I said, airfare is the big killer. Once that's out of the way it's usually ok. I try and buy my airfare as early as possible (Those last minute deals are scams more often than not) and once the bank account has recovered from the financial shock of that, it's usually ok.

But, it depends on how you decide to travel and where you go. Obviously, if you go somewhere like Thailand (for example) and stay in $4 a night rooms and just eat at street stalls for all your meals, then it's not going to cost very much at all, even if you stay for like 3 weeks or whatever.

But if you went to the same place and wanted to stay in nicer, cleaner places, then obviously the shock to the bank account is going to be much worse.

Yeah, I'm probably middle of the road. So long as I've got a shower and some degree of privacy, I'm happy to do whatever.

What worries me is the bank balance after traveling, and how it might effect me later on down the track (especially given my moving overseas won't be cheap).

Re:Travel, money and savings. Reply to this message
Yep. I can understand that. Im getting to a similar point now as well.

The easiest way that I use to decide if I can afford to visit a place it to check out the per day living costs for it. I find that easier than working out a total cost for the whole trip, because with a per day or per month cost, it easily plugs into your budget and you can work out of the extra cost is workable or not.

Re:Travel, money and savings. Reply to this message
That was roughly what I did for the most recent trip, though truth be told, it's pointless when you're essentially going on a trip where 'spending' makes up a great portion of it.

I'm just getting really restless now. I want to leave already.

Re:Travel, money and savings. Reply to this message
True. I guess it's all destination dependent. Like, if you went somewhere where shopping or whatever is a large part of the trip, then it's going to be more expensive.

Just depends on what you want to do.

Just a bit over that now. I have no problem with what I did, as I was pretty stingy leading up to that trip...but it isn't traveling as much as it is a holiday.

It's hard to say, because once I'm gone, I'm gone for good. That being the case, I'll probably finish up my degree and prior to ending up in London, I'll travel for a few months early next year. I really, REALLY want to do Sth. America, but I can't see it fitting in.

What I want to do is travel through the Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe and finally, Western Europe and the UK (where I'll then be living). Given how close Africa is, I wouldn't mind heading south to Ghana should the chance arise (but that's a huge 'should').

Hence why I'm anticipating an expensive few months, and unlikely to travel (much*)until then.

*I might be going to Vietnam toward the New Year (or possibly earlier) for a week. My brother is definitely going, so the odds are, I'll tag along.

Why not travel to the UK via South America?

I reckon that's what Ill do when uni finishes up in November. Go to South America, and then onwards to London in March or so.

I cant really see travel in South America being too damaging to my budget for living in London, if Im careful between then and now.

I just thought, probably incorrectly, that logistically it would make more sense to do take the path up and across so to speak. I don't think I can afford to do the whole lot unfortunately (plus, I'll be traveling with my brother).

From my experience, travel in Brazil aint cheap. Expect food and accommodation to be only slightly cheaper than what you pay here in Aus, with the quality being a lot less, especially the food!
Nice enough place, but like I said, definately not cheap.
Bus Train and Domestic plane tickets, expect about the same.
Check out Salvador, nice town, plenty of history etc etc. Be carefull in Brasil, it can be quite dangerous in the wrong areas, like any place. Having said that, I didnt have any probs there at all. I DEFINATELY wouldnt set foot in Sau Paulo!!!!!!!!

I thbought you were going to the UK?

Anyway, I love travelling. I really miss going to Holland every two months and wandering around Amsterdam and Haarlem and really enjoying the artwork at the Museum Boijmans *in Rotterdam (definitely one of the best in the world).

I never really started to travel till I left 5+ years ago. I rarely took time of work or holidays and I mut admit, I rarely thought about going overseas, so i saw lots of places in Australia.

Travel on what you can. Sometimes when I have travelled by myself, I have stayed in Hostels just for the experience (and to meet other odd but fun people), even though I could afford a hotel. I must admit, now at 30 I dont tend to do them. Its just embarassing when they ask your age..lol

www.lastminute.com

Milan, you can get a 4 star hotel + starting from under 200 quid during the off season. We usually stay at the Hotel Splendido Sede Legale: Via F. Turati 20121. It is so close to the Central Train Station.

Hey Kane,

Yeah, I'm going to end up in London to live, but I'm going to be traveling for a few months prior (and hopefully many years after).

I've saved money for, basically, most my life. The thing is, I'm not sure how moving to London will hit my pocket, so I'm a little worried about how much I should set aside for those months of traveling...and what, if any, the implications might be.

I've a feeling I'm overreacting for the most part.

jaykaye - just do it. Don't worry too much about the future, it has a tendency to look after itself, within intelligent parameters. Get out and enjoy the world, meet lots of great people and avoid Lonely Planet-holding backpackers at all cost.

Whoa, hey. Lonely Planet isn't that bad. It's the wikipedia of travel guides. A good place to start (at least when I was in Hong Kong).

I didn't take it around with me, but I read through it every so often.

...and yeah, I've just got no idea regarding employment prospects following my arrival in London which is why I'm most worried i.e. I'll need money to get pay for rent, food etc. but I don't want to sell off all my investments.

'I've saved money for, basically, most my life. The thing is, I'm not sure how moving to London will hit my pocket,'

The conversion rate eats up Aussie dollars. When I first got there, I think I spent around $A5,000 in the first month till I got my first pay cheque in pounds.

Jobs are easy find, all my friends who come over for a working holiday (the majority sponsored) have found a job easily.

You can check out prices on www.gumtree.co.uk and www.loot.co.uk for prices on rentals. Get an Oyster Card as soon as you land (I miss my Oyster Card). A great transport card. You can get a Zone 1 to 2 for 22.30 pounds or 23.20. You can go anywhere in those zones. Single trips by cash have gone up heaps.

Fruit and veg is cheap as their. Steer clear of the red meat and just go for Seafood items, fish, prawns etc (its slightly cheaper and better looking).

Clothes are really cheap. And the sales are huge.

And even you can pints at some places for under 2 quid. And you can alcohol 24 hrs. Love an off license.
