Jetstar Airlines cheap or cheat? Reply to this message
Has anyone else noticed Jetstars cavalier approach to aussie travellers? At first they advertised in US dollars What the?? They increase their fares to Bali on a daily basis as departure day approaches, making planning a holiday for budget travellers (which is who they say they cater for) impossible. In some instances, the fare to Bali ex Sydney via Melbourne is cheaper than direct from Sydney. They advertise on international sites that they belong to the Qantas group, but they don't advertise that on the aussie site and THAT part of the webpage cannot be printed out.Recently,I was informed by their staff certain flights would be included in an upcoming promotion..not true and email notification of available routes in the sale was posted at 11am The sale (with limited seating)began at 9am. I wrote a letter of complaint to them (their customer service centre cannot be contacted by phone)they responded by saying it will take "at least six weeks to respond"!? A friend returning from Bali recently became quite ill on the flight and asked if she could connect with an earlier flight to Melbourne from Sydney with another member of the group, their response was a very non - caring NO! Has anyone else noticed all these things and more?? They may be legal practices but are they ethical and honest? Like I said..cheap or cheat!?

Jet Star is Ok !! if you travel to bali it could well be in US dollars it is an International flight !! if you try to book to far out you will pay full fare , you need to monitor the fares from about a month out as they try to fill the flight the fares come down, it works .

Sorry, perhaps I did not articulate clearly what is going on. What is happening, is the opposite of what you are saying and that is why I am angry about this. I agree thats what generally happens and what we as travellers have come to expect as common practice. As for Bali being an international destination, and therefore it being acceptable that fares are quoted in US dollars..is a nonsense,(as Jetstar have clearly seen, as they NOW quote in Aussie dollars)) Our other Australian airline,(Qantas) as is the case with foreign airlines whose flights originate in this country, quote in Aussie dollars..as it should be. Sorry if you misunderstood my posting..I hope it is more clear now that it is the opposite of what you are saying that is happening and that I agree with you that that is generally the norm and is partially the reason I am so disturbed by this practice of Jetstars.

As a general rule, airfares are cheaper the earlier out from the date of departure you buy them, especially if it's for a popular route.

The only time they get cheaper as it gets closer is if the airline is struggling to sell the remaining seats. (And this is quite rare)

This has been my experience with several airlines, including Jetstar, Air Asia, Qantas, Virgin Blue and Air New Zealand.

I agree with you, as do several of my friends. As frequent travellers to Bali we have found Jetstars advertising and pricing structure to be less than satisfactory and their telephone staff generally rude, misinformed and confrontational. Your friends experience with their ground staff does not surprise us. Jetstar are actually helping the mothership (Qantas) as most of my friends and I would prefer to pay extra than waste our time on the net or telephone with this supposedly cheap airline. Perhaps, that is their (Qantas)plan?????!!!!

I recently returned from Bali (monday)after being there a month.
I flew return by jet star and in Bali when i wanted to change my flight to return a few days earlier to Australia , i was informed to change mine and my daughters tickets was US 40 dollars per ticket.I did ask about this before i left Australia and was told it wouldn't incur any costs. The food was very exspensive to buy and you were given a very small bottle of water for free but nothing on the way back.Usually i only pay 60% of of the air fare for my daughter as shes under 14 but there is no discount with jet star like other airlines.Taking that into account and paying for meals ,drinks ,movie hire(12 dollars) i found ourselves worse off.The staff to and from Bali were very nice though and especially on our return.

Firstly, let me apologise in advance to the people who do like to travel Jetstar - I am sure this will be a small group. Jetstar are a cheap looking, cheap service, cheap quality airline that unfortunately is spreading like a cancer amongst Qantas domestic routes. This airline, which at times is far dearer than Qantas on the same routes oozes low quality in every aspect - from the cheap looking Crew uniforms to the general attitude. Fly with someone else you say - well I would if there was another option. One can only hope things will get better when Tiger starts flying

Ive flown Jetstar a couple of times, and not really had any complaints, except for the flight home from HCMC where they refused to serve anyone a meal who didnt pre-book. (In spite of the fact there was plenty to go around)

Travelling 10 on only a stomach full of pho bo wasnt that hot, but considering it was exceptionally cheaper than any other airline, Im not complaining too much.

What can I say about Jetstar - you get what you pay for.

If you want an el cheapo flight and experience, Jetstar may be the airline for you.

For any flight longer than 2-3 hours I wouldnt even consider using a budget airline...Jetstar or otherwise.

Is it truly worth cramped seats, cr@p service, expensive meals etc (assuming you feel the need to purchase such) just to save approx AUD$60-70???

As for Tiger airways, it's a great airline which I have enjoyed using in the past and will no doubt use again...not much good if you dont live in Perth or Darwin though :(

Considering even Perth - Singapore or even Perth - Denpasar is approx 5+ hrs flight, it is definitely worth considering using a full fare airline just for the comfort factor alone :)

I found a few tourists in Bali were very disappointed with Jetstar and one couple said after paying for meals and drinks, entertainment and a blankets to and from bali , the savings were not worth it.hey said they felt guilty eating meals while others had nothing to drink or eat.
Be very careful of how much weight you are carrying with luggage etc as Jetstar is very strict.I found they were more relaxed about extra weight in Bali and just as a sideline, the security at the airport in Bali is very good. Each person is frisked before boarding and your luggage is scanned before you check in so that was a good thing.
Bali has increased its security as best it can and not once did i feel unsafe there. The balinese are still as lovely as ever and really miss Australian tourists.

Jetstar sux!!! Obviously by the fact they will take six weeks to reply to your complaint, even though they had to put pen to paper to tell you this.....THEY DON'T CARE!!! The travelling Australian public needs to send them a message by travelling with other airlines and as the last writer said....it works out to be about the same anyway with all their hidden costs and misinformation given from staff.

There are much cheaper and better airlines to Asia than Jet star. Any airline that has a connection with Qantas should be avoided at all costs. They have gone from one of the best to one of the worst airlines in the world.

Re:Jetstar Airlines cheap or cheat? Reply to this message
its quite clear there are alot of people who dont understand how airlines work and are making up a lot of stories due to there misunderstandings.

firstly cheap airfares are that cheap and since day dot they have never been able to change them unless you pay a penalty.

secondly like any business they will offer you a discount if you book in advanace subject to date and seats.

no different than a restaraunt offer 2 for 1 on a monday night i mean are they going to give you that on a friday night get real.

Meals on discount airlines have to be pre booked along with other services and they dont refuse service they only carry a certain amount to reduce wastage so maybe you missed out as you didnt book.

I mean anyway if the flights 3hours eat before you leave home!

as far as tiger depends where they fly but dont expect them to be any different in comfort to jetstar i mean arent they a cheap airline!

as far as phone staff jetstar like any discount airline world wide survives on interenet bookings!

at the end of the day how hard is it to book via the internet turn up at the airport and travel.

re luggage allowance if you want to carry your kitchen sink pay for it they are in business get real you have to pay! for excess

Bring on Tiger.

What ever happened to return fares? This one way ticket pricing thing is a total con. A one way fare has always been 75% of the return fare.

Re:Jetstar Airlines cheap or cheat? Reply to this message
I booked Tiger to Bangkok and return (from Perth). The total fare came to $497, which is around half the discount fare on any of the major carriers. Most of that figure comprises taxes. The actual fares each way were under $100.

But there is a downside.

First, I will have to transit through Singapore and will be there for around 15 hours each way. No problem for me, because I can catch up with friends, but it's still a pain having to wait that long between flights.

Second, you can only take 15Kg of baggage, meaning that I'll have to cut back on the amount of goodies I was planning to take for friends and family in Bangkok.

Finally, I've heard that the 737 aircraft they use are quite cramped.

None of these matters are a real issue. I expect that if I choose to fly with a discount airline, I'll have to accept some discounted conditions.

"secondly tiger having 737's never had and probably never will they are a single fleet type and only have airbus A320."

Yeah - you're right! I just checked my on-line booking and you're right, it's an A320.

Happy now?

300 Australians stranded in Honolulu
Email Print Normal font Large font April 15, 2007 - 7:09AM

AdvertisementAlmost 300 Australians have been stranded at Honolulu airport for two days after a Jetstar plane broke down.

Jetstar has botched attempts to get two planeloads of exhausted passengers home after the budget airline found problems with the fuel gauge of one of its four Airbus A330 aircraft, News Limited reported.

The plane was due to leave Honolulu for Sydney early on Friday and then return to take another group to Melbourne.

But the plane has not left the ground, and Jetstar said it had been unable to charter another aircraft or find seats for the stranded passengers.

A Jetstar spokeswoman said the problem was complicated and time-consuming because Qantas engineers had to drain and refill about 13,000 litres of fuel to test whether the gauge was working properly.

"It's not a situation we ever wanted to happen, but we've got teams working overtime to try to fix the problem," she said.
