On Saturday the 3rd I went through the security thingy at the Mackay airport on my way to Brisbane forgetting I had metal plates in my shoes but the machine didn't beep.
On Monday the 12th I went through the security thingy at the Brisbane airport on my way back to Mackay not realising I had coins in my pocket and wearing the same shoes and their machine didn't beep either.
So, what's the go, do these machines work or not |

I guess the best answer is sometimes they do and sometimes they dont.
I've been pulled aside for forgetting to remove a pair of scissors from a first aid kit I always carry when travelling.
But then, they let me keep the tweezers and splinter pr.ick so hard to fathom what the go with it all is??? |

You should try Heathrow! Shoes off..socks off..coats off..
belts off..jumpers off..hats/beanies off..no lipstick..no
water..no hand cream..medicines carried in premeasured doses only..no separate handbag-it has to fit into the ONE
piece of handluggage or be discarded..THEN they screen you! |

| I transited at Gatwick to Heathrow to Australia in January this year, and i didnt see any of that? whys that i wonder? i was really surprised how quick and easy to get through...as i was expecting exactly how ADRIE7 described....only thing i can agree with is one hand luggage and plastic bag with items showing. Gatwick was a breeze to get through customs and to leave airport and Heathrow same...hmmmmm |

Country to country the airport security is all over the place. La Guardia in New York you have to queue to check-in, then take your baggage and queue again to stand there while they x-ray it with you there!
Meanwhile at Heathrow I actually never had any problems with security, but the consistently most anal and draconian (apart from the fairly justified NY experience) was in Australia ... especially Mackay and Brisbane! Laptop batteries, fluids, steel pens, belts, SANDALS ... for some reason the Australian screeners are just over the top. I've even been scanned for drugs and explosives 5 times!
Then again I do have that whole terrorist accountant look going for me ... |

I had a bottle of rum and 2 cans of beer either side in my carry on backpack on an international flight Saturday. I thought it looked like a bomb under their xray machine but never got asked to open the bag for them to look.
Whereas 2 bottles of wine in my carry on backpack when I travelled to Japan a few yrs ago (before sept 11th) caused merry hell as i went through the xray machine lol :o) Thought I was gonna have to sqaut over a mirror |

getting the once over can be hit and miss due to "threat levels", if you travel through somewhere and they believe an attack is likely you are a good chance to get checked.
it doesn't matter who you are or what you look like in reality.
point in case i was checked back in 2005 at Brisbane airport. i was travelling on an ADF ticket (Army) on my way to CT training/selection, the whole group thought the guy was taking the p1ss till he had me remove shoes, belt, etc. |

one of the classics in airline security is having to use palstic knives
now do an experiment, try and cut with the metal butter knives on other international flights....impossible to break your skin. Could use it to stab you say.....well sorry its nowhere near as effective as the metal fork you are allowed to have or the ballpoint pen which is a very effective stabbing weapon
now try cutting yourself with the plastic knife the airlines are forced to give you.....yep can cut a person open with one slash
security or politics??? |

Too damned right they can. While plastic knives are a use-one item, and obviously blunt quickly, a new one can inflict a serious slash-wound if used properly. Or improperly, depending on one's perspective. |

in sydney i get searched all the time brisbane, gold coast never touched, perth a few times, but nothing as bad as the USA line to check, in line for securiy, line for baggage, line for carry on baggage,2 hours of security before i can sit down and get something to eat before the flight |

Few weeks back I had an early morning flight from Adelaide to Perth. I was sick with the 'flu, so probably sweating, and looked pretty ragged as well.
Went through the normal security, then got dragged aside for further screening. Had to remove belt and shoes, had my carry-on screened with a chemical sniffer, as well as my pockets.
OK - I don't condemn them for being thorough, they're just doing their job. But the more I have to use airports, the more I hate them.
Thanks, Osama... |

I had my hairclip removed (it had a sharp end) at Perth International by the Air NZ crew but they let me on the plane with a handheld cordless drill!!!!? There were enough drill bits in there to cause havoc.
What did they think it was, a hairdryer?
On another flight with Singapore Air they let me on board no worries, with a bullet key ring (my favourite secret weapon - pointy enough to maim an assailant), yet confiscated it from me in Singapore and returned it in Japan. I presume they took it apart to make sure it carried no live charge, but when I got it back the point had been blunted - bummer!
By far, the most pointless and tedious security checks I've been through were all at Sydney airport. |

I agree that airport security are far too anti-Arabist.
Seriously, people need to learn that most Arabs are not terrorists. |

| That must save on medical expenses for him. What happens if you wanted to go through with a full face burqa outfit you know I saw one in central Sydney the other day nothing showing a walking black sack with fine black muslin cloth over the face. Must be hot in summer, but what is the security on an outfit like that??? |

Security demands burqa wearers to remove their cover for the passport photo and at the immigration counter, they can request a room to be 'checked'. If they object, NO FLY LIST...
And those full body covers arent even muslim! Its Arabic culture not Islamic law. So their argument for 'religious' tolerance don cover it. |

I once saw a man having an argument with airport security.
He was p!ssed off that they were stopping him from bringing a knife and a ridiculous amount of alcohol on the plane.
They confiscated it.
He ended up sitting in front of me - I have never smelt such a horrific body odour. The first thing he did was order beer.
It was disgusting. Airport security should detain people with inappropriate personal hygeine and force them to shower before boarding a plane. LOL. |
