... sometime mid-year ... my husband wants to drive it, but I am not at all fussed on driving over 2,000km when we need to be there for only one night anyway ... my brother is getting married lol ...
My parents did this trip by road last year, and said it was the most awful experience of their life ... they saw virtually nothing, and it was extremely costly ...
Has anyone else ever done this trip by road before??? ... if so, how many stops did you have ... good accomodation along the way??? ... route travelled??? ...
Tips/advice/helping me talk my hubby into flying would be appreciated LOL! |

Long trip, just for one night. That's what aeroplanes are for :)..
Anyway, I did it quite a while back. Left Brisbane, drove via Cunningham Gap to Warwick, over to Inglewood, then down the Newel Highway through Coo*nabarabran (I can't believe this stupid board won't let me type the name of that town), turned west then through Broken Hill, on to Peterborough, southwest down to Adelaide (I was actually on my way through to Perth).
Long and costly, and the countryside is less than interesting in many parts. I stayed in motels at Narrabri and Broken Hill - took me over two days in all. |

Yeah Dissent, my hubby thinks the kids will be so thrilled seeing all that countryside for 2 days driving ... NOT!!! ... It would be different if we had a good few weeks to drive leisurely and have a good look around, but we're going primarily for a wedding, nothing else at this stage ... flying is my option, but he's got the Clark Griswold family roadtrip in his mind LOL!!! ... in the ole' family truckster ... he's severely clouded haha ...
Thanks for your input, your route would be the way I was seeing it on the map ... |

Driving over 2,000km when you need to be there for only one night anyway, I don't know if it is a good idea, as it wouldn't it take then then 1 day to get there?
And the airfares would be cheaper then petrol?
Or maybe drive to say Broken Hill and get a flight to Adelaide or Train? |

Hi Rebecca. Why will it only be for the one day/night? Why not make it a family holiday? Adelaide is a great place. It takes us 11 hours non stop to get home (Adelaide) from here. It is a long boring drive with just two kids in the car, let alone your lot! We borrowed a Twin Screen car DVD player which made the trip bearable for the kids (and us). It is okay in the cooler weather, but when we first moved here we travelled on a day that was 46 degrees - not a good idea! I doubt that the air fares would be cheaper with you, hubby and the 6 kids, but then again what type of accomodation would you need for a large family, at least a couple of motel rooms, for the nights you are on the road. If you can make it a longer trip it would probably be nice. But if you cant, why does the whole family have to go, maybe you could just fly to see your brother get married? We went home to Adelaide in October for my sister in laws wedding, we all went because it was going "back home" and we stayed over a week to catch up with all our other friends and my family as well. And also, if you are going to drive two days in the car, you will need at least a few days for everyone to get over the trip before expecting them to get back in the car and do it all over again!
I have driven from from Adelaide to the Gold Coast for a holiday with my parents when I was younger, but we stayed for 3 weeks. |

Hi Bralexlee, long time no see :P ... told ya, I was a poet! :P
The reason we wouldn't be staying all that long is because we already paid and booked for this year's holidays, and my hubby won't have any holiday time leftover for another one. So this is why we were hoping to do the trip in only a few days. I'm dead against driving it, for that period of time, but he's hell bent on it, for the "scenic factor". Unfortunately, I guess he doesn't realise what hell it will be with 8 of us in the car at the one time, and most of our travels would be at night anyway, while the kids were asleep. I am seriously considering just taking the two oldest boys along with me, and flying down for the weekend. Driving seems to be too tiresome for me to even think about LOL! |

| Well there isnt going to be much scenary unless you take it slowly and make a lot of stops along the way to actually look at the scenary and visit some places of interest! (Which will take more than two days to get there, and more accomodation costs.) Yeah Im with you - take the plane! It will be hell for the little ones in the car for that long of a trip, I know my 4 year old hates it, you know kids cant sit still for THAT long! |

God yeah, I know what you mean ... when we visit my parents in Brissy, the kids are moaning "Are we there yet???" by the time we're on the Gatton bypass ... hell no, no car travel that distance for us ... hubby can stay home and buy McDonalds for a couple of nights PMSL! ...
ps. good to see you anyway ... how much longer until new little bubba comes along? |

Delivery date is 5th March, so it was two months yesterday, or 8 weeks from Monday. (Thats if is doesnt decide to come of its own accord before then!) AHHH!
Not many people been on the boards lately, but I have been here! The reason we didnt drive home to be with the family for Christmas was because its too bloody far to drive in the hot weather, even without being 7 months pregnant. The holidays been pretty boring, but I have been busy getting everything ready for the baby, washing up all the old baby stuff from the boys! Oh joy!
Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year. |

I've heard the weather has been really hot down that way ... pretty pleasant up here lately ... we had a good Christmas, quiet, just family, but nice all the same ... hope yours was a good one ... |

| Come on Becs hubby get in the 21st century, fly, fly, fly, it's so cheap and quick and relaxing (if flights are'nt delayed and baggage not lost)you can enjoy the scenery at 20,000 feet. Just think of all the wear and tear on the car if you drive, not to mention petrol, whining kids (and wife). Get flight costs then try to work out how much it would cost to take the car and compare. Good Luck |

What cant your hubby cook Becca? How long have you been married and after that many kids, surely there has been times when he has had to cook for the family. You need to retrain him - and fast! LOL!
So have you convinced him then that you are flying?
I liked the other persons suggestion but I would have said you fly and hubby and the kids drive - that'd soon change his idea about driving 2000km with 6 kids again!
At least if you fly you may get to relax a little while you are there. Where is the wedding and reception? We had ours at Ayres House, it is beautiful there. It is on North Terrace which is in the City. |

| Hi Bralexlee ... well I guess I have just spoiled the man, and he's never been needed to fend for himself ... right before all of my kids were born, I would cook and freeze a whole bunch of stuff, so he didn't have to cook ... was once told I was "making a rod for my own back" ... never quite understand what the problem was, but when a man does endeavour to boil me a dozen eggs for a party the following day, and puts them on to cook for 36 minutes, it does seem to me, that he needs to LEARN TO FRIGGIN' COOK!!! ... pmsl ... you shoulda seen those eggs ... my house smelled like fart for a week! |
