Cant i quit my job and travel the world? Reply to this message
How much does working 9 to 5 bite? (more like 8 to 6, if you wanna know the truth) Why can’t i just chuck it all in, buy a plane ticket to anywhere, toss some clothes into a backpack and head off into the wide blue yonder? I don’t need my parents lecturing me on my “career” and how i should be saving for a house. Plenty of time for a grey cardigan, a pair of slippers and a mortgage when I reach their age. This is my time to do whatever i want whenever i want, no limits! Anyone feel the same?

Yeah, you'd be pretty silly to go if you couldnt support yourself. Though, I didnt do any paid work while I was gone. It has to do with saving your money before going, and being a tightarse when you get there.

I would recomend it to everyone. You learn about other people, yourself, & you learn not to take everything we hear in the media here about other places too seriously.......

If i had the money saved i would do it. I've only been to one place outside of USA and that was Australia. Love to see the world.

Mate - like Aarn said - do it before it is too late. However, I have a few things to add.

If you are a student and halfway through your studies, finish it before you do anything. One day, you will stop travelling, one day, you will grow old. One day, you will want to settle down. You would want to be damned sure you have a sustainable income when that time comes. I would suggest you finish your studies and then take two years' break and see the world. Come back and take up a job. In fact in jobs people would be impressed in interviews when you tell them you are just coming back from a world tour. But I know the feeling. When I was a student - I felt exactly like you.

If you have already finished studing and fooling around - go now. Go before you are married or end up in a coporate job.

You won't believe how boring life can then be - all your life you studied and worked for a "stable" and "happy" life and you will eventually find it is all a hoax. Sure, you will ride a BMW perhaps, but you will also have to wait for your yearly holiday and the bhonus and planning for "that holiday" will never finish. You will cook, you will change nappies, you will fight with your partner and get screwed by your bosses and colleagues and you will still have no time for your own self.

So yes - go.

Great to get everyones point of view. i’ve got enough money for a plane ticket and some spending money, and then after that I can wing it! wait tables, work in a bar, whatever gets me to my next destination. i wanna jump into life and not worry about the negative stuff. I reckon life is too short to worry. Like i say – no limits!”

Just do it, don't think about what if, just do it!
I left when I was 24. I filled up my backpack with a few clothes and left for Europe, thinking I'd be away staying with relatives in Switzerland for a few months.
I ended up being away for 5 years - 2 months out on a limb wandering over Europe without a care in the world and soaking up life and learning more about the world than i ever imagined. I then hit Britain where I worked at various jobs, and packed up and moved to a new place every few months.
I was quite shy a few years ago but now I feel the world is inside of me, and have some amazing experiences i'll never let go of.
A career can wait, if you want one. Im 30 and restarting uni. You can do what you want. Dont follow the rules. Be free, shoot the breeze! You'll get work anywhere if you need the money overseas.
If you want to live outside the square mate, take the plunge, get a one way airticket to the UK to start off with and branch out from there.
The world is waiting for you!!

It has nothing to do with coprporate rich parents, kurdup - it is to do with one's own ambition. Aaron is at least lucky he saw the world - so are some other folks in this message thread. If one wants to see the world - one needs only a starting point...it always works out somehow.

To be frank with you - I am older than you and I had had enough of my corporate life and studies. For the past fifteen years, I been studying (full time and part time) and working - getting step after step in the big corporate ladder that never seems to end and during this time - I have seen only two other countries.

I feel sick these days - one should get out. I have started taking my time out - I am doing some adventure tours, something to get me out of the monotony and I am also planning to get out and start travelling. I hope to start with Scandinavian countries and then Latin America.

It really is amazing how travelling makes you feel you have the world in your pocket - you are right, eyeintime.

Nopes - I meant exactly what I said - fight with your partner (I have none at this time - thankfully) and getting screwed by your colleagues and bosses (again, thankfully - my present workplace is the best I ever had - this is from when I was struggling to get myself on my feet)...

Most people (even when "successful") remain in the same pathetic condition they so desperately try to avoid in life. Happiness is one heck of an amorphous thing - you never know what it looks like :=((((((((

Yeah. I dont know of many people, on their death beds who have said, "I wish I made more money", but I know of a few who have said "I wish I got around to seeing......"

Mate do yourself a favour and start planning now.I started when I was twenty one and stopped off here in Oz when I was twenty seven and never returned to Europe.I have incredible memories of my travels and often (and I mean often)reminisce about those days gone by.I have had the privelage to meet some fantastic folk of different race and religion along the way.

I am now long married and have three young children,(they were late children) so I am commited to the drudge of showing up for work on a daily basis and waiting on holiday time to come along for a rest, with those commitments and the industry I work in backpacking oversees for me again is but a daydream (I do however plan to take a trip to Vietnam in june, 'Er indoors' will go crazy when I spring it on her).

Do be warned though there is a chance the itchy feet syndrome will never leave. It can be disheartning when watching a travel programme and you know you just cant get up and go.Anyway Im raving, pack your bags (with very little luggage) and start planning.Im forever telling the young ones in the work to do this.Bon Voyage !

I do know how you feel there. As a child and teen I never left the New England Area, until I joined the military right after high school. However I chose the army, and I later learned that they don’t travel anywhere’s you necessarily WANT to go. However, I traveled to different parts of the USA (which was a start), and then I was introduced to international travel by living two years in South Korea. It was a whole new world to me and I loved it. From there a new door opened in my life, I had to see everything, I stopped through Japan, went through Thailand. And while I wish I had traveled more... you do not have that liberty as a soldier. I later returned to the states and came out to Iraq, since I have been here, I have been to Qatar and Kuwait as well, again new and exotic, but restricted access for us military types. I plan on getting out soon enough, and taking a long needed break to see what the life is like outside of restrictions of youth, contract, responsibility. Now at 22, I plan on seeing a friend in New Zealand days after I get out, and venturing off to Panama, and returning to South Korea since it had made such a huge impression on my life. I have many places that intruige me, with thier ways of life and culture. Eventually I will return to my ways as the "planner" for the future but not anytime soon... this is a release I think we all need at one time or another, it's just best to realize it earlier while you are free, than later when you’re restricted. These feelings may never go away, and I recommend to all able; to just give in and go, to do it, see where it leads you, as long as you do it smartly. Don't evade responsibility, but don’t tell yourself one day you will do it because, 1000 days later, you will regret the time you mis-spent doing things other than what you dreamed about... Movie stars shouldn’t be capable of living out our fantasies on the silver screen... this is our world too.

in 1997 my partner passed away,I was lucky in that I was retired on a super disabilty pension,,, so I decided to travel,,,I did this by house sitting around the world,so now I live in summer time all year round, just get a work permit for the country you will be visiting and by looking after the house you will only have to pay for phonecalls, car petrol&insurence, and food, been around the world 7 times now

Now that sounds like the way to go. Year-round summer alone does it for me.

So how do you get to be a house-sitter? Is there like an agency for that?
