Hi all,
I have found charter flight specials on the internet. They look ridiculously cheap. I guess you get what you pay for. Is there anyone out there who has taken one of these flights? I'm interested in finding out more.

Hi Rick,
These flights are between Perth or Sydney and London (Gatwick). They are operated by Thomsonfly (Formerly Britannia Airways). Surely you've heard of Thomson's. They are like the Flight Centre in the UK.

yes of course i have heard of them but i was unaware they flew to australia on a regular basis ie over summer, britannnia havent been coming here for a quite a few years, and if you check thomsonflys website destinations of sydney is not listed.
as mentioned Flight centre also have quite a few offices in the UK these days also
Im just amazed though being that to operate an aircraft costs at least $5000 per hour or more depending on size.
based on 8 hours sydney/singapore and then 13hours singapore/london that would be about between $80,000 to $100,000 one way just to operate the flight
If you took it at about 240 passengers in all economy at $179.00 each that would only be about $43,000 Aud.
so either they are going broke or only have these fares as bait advertising it would be interesting to know how many are at this price
I think the best you can do to UK one/way in general is about $900 to $1200 and this is normally off peak only
you will most likely be looking at around $1300 to $1500 at this time of year if you want to go the UK one/way however hunt around
but as they say if its to good be aware |

are you sure this isnt a free plug?
anyway i would suggest you look at the airline websites
the previous guestimate i gave earlier is fairly on the mark for this time of the year....... ie just checked
virgin atlantic via hkg (if you can get a seat out of hkg) $1421 o/w
emirates via dubai $1768.48
qantas (till 24dec) $1560 o/w (after 24dec) $1398 o/w
of course you need to check out all airlines websites daily as fares can be like the stock market and what i quote today might be not the case tommorrow
but i still cant grasp $179.00 o/w plus taxes which would be at most $400/$500 making it around $500 ot $700 Aud o/w |

Hi all,
I have booked one of these flights so I'll let you know how I go. :)
The AU$179 flights are out of Perth. Not much help for the majority of Australians who live on the east coast. I was lucky enough to get on one of AU$859. Effectively, it is AU$379 going over and AU$480 coming back. This means that I'll get a WHITE CHRISTMAS!!!
I find it a little hard to believe that I got a flight for this price. I understand that we don't get many charter flights to OZ. They will get my support if they can delivery significant saving like this.

I'd also be interested in Thompson. I noticed a Thompson 737 sitting at Perth International a few weeks back, so there must be a charter market into Perth as well.
Normally, the lowest airfare (return) from Perth to the UK (on a restricted-fare basis) is around $1,700 after tax. |

Hi all.
I flew with Thompsons direct from London (via Abu Dabi and Singapore). It was a great flight for such an amazing price!! Standard meals and refreshments are included in the cost. The cabin crew are very professional and the take offs, mid-flight and landings were perfect (I was very nervous). The only difference to the big airlines is you have to pay for alcoholic drinks, and there are a few films on screens scattered through the cabin (so you cant pick and choose your programs). The seats are smaller and the leg room is tight, but hey, what can you expect for such a brilliant price. I am desperate to find one to return during Feb, but they have finished flying till next summer. Its a long 24 hours, but the money saved makes up for it. For the true budget traveler make sure you pack some extra nibbles, water and headphones so you dont have to pay for these on the flight. Good luck and happy budget flying. |

Prue
A friend of mine was returning to London this month with Thompsons so I have some recent info. Check out if this is still current at http://www.austravel.com/london The info on the website suggests there is a final flight at $299.00 returning FEB 02 from Syd, and Feb 04 from Perth. These are standby flights, however if you wish to confirm a flight, you can do so for something like $650 - $700. A bit more than standby but still a hell of a lot less than a regular fare

Hey Mr RickBowman2004!
The entire flight is not booked with discount seats...there are only a few seats at these prices and with strict conditions. The flight is already profitable from the 90% of full and premium fare/charter paying passengers.
The prices you quoted sound more like return prices from retail agencies or airline websites. Seasoned travellers rarely use a popular retail agent or website. Aussie travel agents are tight lipped about most deals, but even through my local agent I was able to find 2 airlines (Emirates and Qantas) both o/w to London (ex Syd/Bris) for under $1100 inc taxes - peak time at xmas.
If you've travel much build a good relationship with an overseas agent...I use a couple of contacts, one in London, one in Frankfurt (an old girlfriend actually) and one in Manilla, who either look after me or refer me to Aussie agents with the best deals - usually based in Chinatown and never advertised except in the Chinese newspapers. These were the guys who directed me to Thompsons.
Ive had a couple of average flights over the years, but most are fine!
cheers |
