| Hey! Can anyone help me out? I live in America right now and I want to migrate to Oz. I have plenty of people who will sponsor me,but I don't think the gov. will accept them.(Best friend~like my sister~and her husband~who is an Aussie citzen). Then a friend who owns her own business that will sponsor me. The thing is, I'm having trouble with all the paper work. AND trying to get my ex to sign papers stating our children can move there. I'm very anxious to get there. I was there in Aug. of this year and I fell in love with the countryside, food and the people were wonderful!! If anyone knows how I can possibly get there faster then what my progress is, I would very much appreciate it. I will be planning a visit in July with my kids. Can hardly wait ! :) Thank you very much!! |

best way to do it travel half way around the world thru countries that would welcome you to a place called indonesia.
when you arrive there go down to the docks and speak to any of the local boat owners and ask them if they do fishing trips to australia
most do and you will find that the boats may not make it all the way and you may end up overboard
dont worry the australian navy will rescue you at no cost to yourself so dont worry about travel insurance
you will be taken to a nice centre where you will given special dietary meals at your request, sporting facilitys, televison, phone and internet and even study groups.
you may spend a year or two there depending of if you decide to throw away your passport whilst the junk is going down and if you tell them you are canadian instead of american to see if that improves your chances
once you are out you will also get help with accomdation, education, employment and possibly even a mobile phone.
I hope this will help in getting you into australia it works and many people can vouch for it. |

Ignore that.
If you want to immigrate to Australia, I think the best chance you have of getting permanent residncy is to have a skill.
At the moment the government is hiring a lot of skilled workers (engineers, doctors, electricians etc) from overseas. Contact our consulate & ask them just what skilled workers we need, if you fit the bill, you have a really good chance. |

I agree with Aaron. They are especially looking for skills in nursing, accounting, podiatry etc. You can visit the official department of immigration site (DIMIA, as we call it - something synonymous with your INS in the states). The address is: http://www.dimia.gov.au
Also, there is a points system here. I think the skilled migration tracks takes you to have 120 points. 60 points come from your skill, five bonus point comes from your profession, if it is within the Migration Occupation demand List (MODL), language another 10 points (would not be a problem for you - English test is required for non-English speaking applicants) and so on. The points for age reduces with age brackets. The highest age for skilled migrant application is 42 I believe. Also, when applying as a skilled person - you need to have your skills qualifications (IT, accountant, dentist - whatever you are) assessed by relevant Australian bodies (example - Australian Dental Council would look at your certificates and work experience and decide if you have sufficient skills - if you are a dentist and so on).
Also, you can come here on work visas - provided you have a job offer from an Australian company or government organisation.
It takes two years to become a citizen (well perhaps three years after the new terror laws are enforced) after you gain your permanent residency.
Also, you can consider coming here as a student if you do not have any skills and no one to sponsor you. You can get an Australian degree and apply for a skilled migrant visa.
For personal sponsorships - I guess you cannot sponsor your in-laws or something like that - hut you can sponsor spouse, siblings, parents etc.
Like Aaron said - you can also visit the Austr ... |

Like Aaron said - you can also visit the Australian embassy and get information from them. But much of what they would say is what is written in the booklets that you can download from that site. |

As long as the divorce was settled before he came here, it wouldnt matter. |

| Yeah, but it's not like out government is going to stop him moving here if he has them issues. He should sort them out before he comes here as matter of the kids & mothers sake. DIMIA couldnt organise a pi.ss up in a brewery, so I dont think they are going to care. |

| calimom2k - your best bet is to go into www.immi.gov.au. There you can have a look at all the possible immigration categories you can apply under. The Embassy in California closed about 2 years ago. So your closest one is in Washing D.C.. All the forms and information is on this site, however you can also call them and ask them. It usually takes about 4 to 6 months for the application to be accepted or denied. If you go get your visa to come over, you will be a temporary resident for 2 to 3 years, after that, depending on your category, you can become an permanent resident. It takes about 5 years to be eligible to become a citizen. So it's not an easy or short process. Again, best luck is to visit the website. |

There was never an Embassy in California, only a Consulate Office. Embassies are always in federal capitals.
I trust you succeed in moving here and you have selected a fine country. However, you may have a battle with your ex signing papers allowing children to live in another country. Most parents could think of nothing worse than being seperated from their children. |

Thanks for all the advise. I've been to the imm.gov site. And done the points test. I'm a receptionist/office manager and don't have enough points. I fall into the pool category. Just trying to find a category I can use. My friend there owns her own business and said she will sponsor me. So, the only problem may be to get my ex to sign the Statutory Declaration letting at least my oldest go over.
I didn't mean for everyone to get into an arguement. And I don't think being an American is the point. The point is that I want to come to Oz for a better life for my kids. The youngest doesn't want to move, or isn't sure if he wants to move. He will most likely stay with his dad. My oldest wants to move to Oz and has stated he is staying there no matter what his dad or I say. He wants to play rugby. Living in Cali is not all its cracked up to be. It appears to be this wonderful place, but there is so much crime here. It's really unbelievable. And if you've lived here before, then, I'm sorry if I offended you. I've lived here my entire 38 yrs. I know what I'm talking about. It was nice not to have to look over your shoulder constantly there in Australia. You really have a beautiful country.
As for those that think I'm an actress...don't know where you got that from. I'm a concerned mom that wants a better life for her kids. I'm sure you have your share of crime, but ours has really gotten out of hand. Besides, I've met and fell in love with an Aussie. He's absolutely wonderful!
But I want to get into Oz on my own accord. Not because of him.
Anyway, thank you everyone for your advise. I really appreciate it! Any more advise? Just keep it coming!! :) |

| I wish you all the success, Ms. Cali Mom. This is nothing personal against you, but just do one thing before you come here - if you have anything that remotely resembles your imperialist American way of life (such as the idea that bombing an innocent country is called giving them freedom), then please leave those behind. We try to make this country a democracy. We cannot make it perfect all the time, but we try. So thanks. |

Cali Mom - I did not honestly mean to target you, just a bit of a residual from answering some other American in these boards.
One other thing you must be aware of. For permamnet residents here in Australia, the government came up with new laws from 2004. That is, if you are coming to Australia from overseas as an immigrant (unless being a spouse or being sponsored) - you will have to settle outside the big cities for the first two years. If you breach that condition within two years, you will lose your residency status.
We have only few big cities here in Oz - Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Perth, Brsibane, Canberra, Hobart. And we have small towns outside the big metropolitan areas. The reason the government wants the newly arrived people settle outside for the temporary time being is to ensure that the pressure on resources (such as water, land, housing, jobs etc.) does not go out of control. of course you can visit the big cities - but you cannot live in those places for the specified time. After two years, you can move in.
I also suggest you keep visiting the site address. Immigration laws change (most changes take effect in July every year, but there are exceptions) - so you can keep abreast of all the information.
Yes we do enjoy a low crime rate. Compared to Los Angeles or New York, Sydney is a good city in that respect. melbourne I guess is even better. |

That's ok. I don't agree with the whole war thing either. And I can't stop it. All Americans aren't bad. Although, to the world we probably look that way.
It's really sad. L.A. is the first place you mentioned. I live about 1 1/2 hours away from there. All the gangs and other thugs are moving this way.
Anyway, I really appreciate your honesty and all your help. I didn't know some of the laws had changed. My sister, the one that I would be living with, said she is moving to the coast. I think she's talking about the Entrance. Not sure. I do know she lives in a suburb of Sydney, Illawong. My boyfriend lives near Bexley. So, I take it I couldn't live in either of these towns? What about the Entrance? My boyfriend wants to live at the beach but I don't know which one. I've only been in Sydney and that's when I fell in love with it!! Can't wait to take my kids in Aug. 2006!!
Well, thanks again. I really do appreciate all the help. Sorry you had to deal with an angry American. |

Calimom, glad that you found my posts useful. Perhaps you are different than others, but after overwhelming americans endorsed an illegal war, yes, the rest of the world does see you differently now I am afraid - I am sorry to report this, but perhaps your media does not know this fact. There is a world outside America - perhaps majority of your countrymen do not know that either. It is okay - no american could show anything to me, I just answered them in this board.
As for living here in Sydney, as far as I know, bexley is within Metropolitan Sydney area (meaning within the big city). So you may not be able to live there. But then again - I was talking about skilled migrants coming here from outside. I do not know if the laws have changed back - but that is very unlikely. I suggest you check again for confirmation. I know spouses and job visa holders can styay in.
As for living in coasts - yes they are outside Sydney metropolitan areas. You can consider living in Sydney's north shores - but those areas may be expensive. North shore of Sydney is more like your Beverly Hills in LA/Hollywood.
But if you do live in Sydney, just ensure you do not end up in one of those shoebox like townhouses (apartment blocks as you are probably used to calling them in the US) - they are really suffocating.
All the best. |

| On the bit about staying outside Sydney - I just checked with some immigration lawyers - basically it applies to skilled migrant class, but to certain subclasses. So you will have to check that out. |

Australia is simply America from the 1990's.... if you're coming here as a tourist then good luck!! but if you are coming here to start a new life, DON'T!! Considering how our government treats us.. you would be better advised to look for a new country.... please trust me on this!! Once I save enough money I intend to escape this godforsaken country for good...
I mean I work in a job in which I was forced to sign away my overtime, penalty rates, holiday pay, annual leave etc... due to our government this will soon become the norm
for all businesses... I am warning you! |
